"Not only do I not want to call anyone on the phone, I really, really don't want to call your parents. Because based on your behavior, they're probably the problem instead of a solution. Yet still, that's the only way I can get you to do the bare minimum of not running around and tackling other students while I'm giving instructions, so call I must"
“Teacher Appreciation” gifts from admin or central office? Yeah, no… never what you really need, like a better paycheck or personal time off to practice “self-care.” You are so on target with these!!!
Wanna know what's funny...they claim they don't have enough funds....but they can spend $250 plus delivery for 25 6 inch subs...ever hear of the $5 footlong place a block from here.
One year our admin gave us each a bag of chips with a sticker on it that said "You're all that and a bag of chips" for teacher appreciation day. Needless to say, we did not feel appreciated.
I've found that if I call them through our Google Meets they are guaranteed to send me to voice mail as the caller id reads Boston (or somewhere far away from here) 😀 I can claim that I'm calling that way to keep a record of the interaction ;-)
I'm not going to lie indoor recess is a movie time. However, I live in Florida so I usually don't need indoor recess lol. That one kid being absent is the truth though, especially if they're never absent.
Indoor recess was definitely movie time as a former TA I can attest to that, some people who don’t live in California have misconception it doesn’t rain here, there’s been times it rained for days, do you know how hard it is to keep 20 -25 four and five year olds entertained when they can’t go outside for days
Thou shalt not disrupt my quiet time! My admin came in yesterday to ask me to fill in for her study hall shift as she had an emergency meeting. My mouth and face said, "Oh sure! No problem!" Inside I was wailing, "But this is my one break alone away from the students for the daaaaaayyyyyyy." 😭
I laughed when she was talking about indoor recess ("We're only playing TWO games that are completely silent!"); she reminded me so much of my late father-in-law! One Thanksgiving (my kids were 5 & 6, their cousin was 8), the cousin led them in a game that she called "Cemetery"; it involved her periodically saying " dead", and the kids would have to freeze in whatever position they were and be completely silent. Whoever moved or made a sound first lost. After a while, all three got tired of the game and started talking about what to play next. My FIL, who had been in the room the whole time, lowered the newspaper he was hiding behind and asked, "Why don't y'all play that dead game again?" I guess Grandpa wanted some more peace and quiet! 💀😂😂😂
I have yard duty EVERY day. To add insult to injury when I don't have duty, after I have gotten the kids ready for recess, phyically drop them off in the playground, enter the school again, take a much needed bio break, finally, return to my class...less than five minutes of recess if left, then the bells rings again...I have to go and pick up kids from the playground...Repeat, next...
God bless your hearts. Thought I wanted to be a teacher. Then I had children! I thank God every night that He gave me 2 kids before I made the biggest mistake of my life. The Lord saved my sanity before that happened!😂😂😂
Our Christmas bonus used to be that our principal made a donation to the charity of his choice. I'm still wondering if he took used it as a tax deduction!
My daughter, sister-in-law are teachers and my younger sons girlfriend is a teachers aide. I have to figure out how to send this to them. Also, I like the way this platform is with different people commenting on the platform. Seems like a group of teachers got together and have some fun with real life teacher related things. Hope it’s stress releasing. Now I’m afraid of misspelling something or using a sentence wrong and I’m a “ more mature” person. Some call 65 old.
In Australia in the 80’s we played “Heads Down Thumbs Up”. Mrs Smith, this game, with love to my 6th Grade teacher (1981) Mrs Mary Hogan - would allow us to play one days IF we were good and IF we had finished our work early, now WE LOVED THIS GAME so we made sure we did all our work (and Mrs H could be a little scary - even though now she’s now on my FB Friends List and now admits we were only her third class out of Uni!!). THIS IS HOW IT WORKS, YOU CAN HAVE A NICE CUP OF COFFEE SIT AT YOUR DESK AND RELAX. You pick a person who’s “in” ALL your other students place their faces on their desks and put both thumbs up. When the person who’s in taps ONE person’s thumb that person has to chase (AND NO IT IS IN NO WAY REALLY LOUD a little bit of laughter which was allowed). Now the person who was “thumbed” had to catch the person who was “in” before they made it back to their desk and then if they did so THAT person would be in….so on and so forth. WE SO LOVED THAT GAME. Mrs H would get a cuppa and just watch and have a laugh or do some marking (grading) - give it a try it’s FUN but if people get too noisy - warn them you will stop the game, you GET A BREAK
We played that here in the US it was called “Heads up 7 up” at least that’s what we called it at my school , other fun game to play because it keeps them quiet is “Sleeping lions” all the kids (except two ) are lions and are sleeping and they can’t move that’s the best part no talking,no giggling no laughing and if they move they’re out ,the two kids(hunters tap the noisy kids, last quiet kid is the winner)
Wait... your job gives you "Teacher Appreciation Gifts"? These actually exist?? (JK I know they do. But really, this varies from school to school; i got a few gifts from the second school I am working at this year, while my mais school only gives us announcements, more work to do, and complaints. It is no wonder teachers feel demoralized and try to find other places to go...)
Lesson plans are just guidelines anyway. If I had a $1 for the number of times I have had to adjust or cut lessons because of the individual classes I am teaching, I would have triple my teaching salary.
OMG “accommodations“. My neighbor was the resource administrator, and parents would call and demand an IEP when their child hadn’t even started kindergarten yet. An inordinate number of people. They’re gaming the system to get their kid he doesn’t have any issues special privileges, extra time on tests, etc., right from the start.
When I used to volunteer as a TA to a kindergarten class indoor recess just meant “ Were putting this movie on that you watched a million times, but who cares, shut up and watch” Oh there’s always a kid that drives you mad, helping out with the younger kids sometimes you had several in one class
I volunteered in a transitional kindergarten/first grade classroom. One day the kids were being difficult. I thought it must be me, my mood, not getting quite enough sleep, or something of that nature. But the teacher said she was struggling with the kids, too. We were both happy that it wasn’t us. She was very happy I was there to validate her. Because it was her real life situation. I was just volunteering to get out of the house during a prolonged period of being off work due to a health issue.
About the bill that shall not be named- does that mean they can't switch teachers last minute (aka the "I know we told you that you would be teaching physics, but now you have biology" the day before students come) anymore? Still a sucky bill, but at least that way it tortures admin too.
Yup, read the handbook. I work for 3 different districts as a substitute teacher. One of the district has 45 minute recess breaks. When it rains or even if it's just a super hot day, it's indoor recess, after they have gone to eat lunch, or the last 15 minutes (something like that, hard to remember, it's been a while). Anyway, one day it was raining and I was in the classroom, and I thought let me go to the restroom. The students came and told me recess was over due to the rain. And the principle was right behind them. He told me: yeah recess is shorter on rainy days but if you need to go to the restroom, you can go. I left and came back QUICKLY. He even thank me for coming right back. Some subs don't read the handbook, or read it and forget many things as the months continue.
I agree with much of what you said. Also, some people use the wrong word for principal because it is a homophone. Some need to check their verb tense (thanked).
@@saba347 Sometimes these errors are due to using the microphone and not catching all of the mistakes. And sometimes I correct things, and RU-vid de-corrects them in a split second after I hit “reply”. It is very frustrating.
Haha I forgot the papers ! Teacher where is my spelling test?? Oh I forgot it I’m sorrry please remind me to bring it tomorrow. I will write a sticky note!! Hahaha I can so relate. Those moments just happen.
A year of lesson plans in advance? Wow, mine would be boring. Read chapter relating to (insert standard). Guided practice answering a worksheet question. Independent practice, worksheet. Assessment-quiz next morning. Easy to copy/paste a few hundred times. I might deviate from those plans and if I get sued by a parent, hope the kid learned something forbidden in time.
I don't know how but somehow e and my classmates caught onto the alchol thing so every year before winter summer or march break there are at least 3 people who either give the teachers a LCBO gift card or just straight up go and hand them a wine bottle
So if teachers must turn in lesson plans before the year begins, what will be the point of doing formative assessments, PLC's and IEP's? Oh, sorry I can't do anything to remediate or enrich your child, I have to stick to those lesson plans that only three parents who are lawsuit-happy bothered to read anyway. Everyone is SOL because we had to CYA.
Teacher Appreciation the PTA started telling parents to give us classroom supplies instead of the gift cards for restaurants and stores that were for me that parents had been giving me.
Talk, no joke, sometimes I need quiet so much, I'll tell the kiddos I have to go to time out to work on freaking work big emotions. Most of them are ok work that.
So I do have questions because I was a TA at a small private Christian school between 2002-2007 so I’m wondering if my experience as a TA was different from being at a public school. This is elementary only recess? Do school still have that and how long is it ,we had four Before school Mid morning Lunch recess After school Special days aka Halloween,Valentines Thanksgiving ,Christmas did your schools / classes have Halloween and VALENTINES DAY Parties . Did classes have Christmas or Thanksgiving parties before school went on break or has that been stopped.
The NEA mentioned in 2022 that 90% of teachers are feeling burned out and 55% are thinking about leaving teaching. If that happened, what would happen to our country? What would happen if all of the burned out nurses quit too? We vent so we can push through and carry on!
Would I want to sub in your room? Show me your plans and I’ll think about it. Are the band-aids easily located? Just give me the name of a reliable student They will know where to find stuff.
