This is a fantastic running song. It has no down parts and it builds one piece at a time to a crescendo. I got so pumped I ran through people's yards and straight into traffic.
It really is a great running song. Another good one for long runs is Bullet the Blue Sky from U2. It's great for late run when you're hurting, you can just lock into the bass line and autopilot.
Their songs are so listenable that it's easy to just miss how good the musicianship is. Of course that means that they can appeal to a wider audience since you can enjoy it on multiple levels.
Man, Chilli Peppers are amazing, they have so many good songs. Don't give up on them. Listen to My Friends, Higher Ground, Soul to Squeeze, Road Trippin, Breaking the Girl.
"Dani California" is another great one. It's a little more mainstream than a lot of their stuff, but it has a great sound and good lyrics. I also love almost everything off of "Mother's Milk" (it was the first R.H.C.P. I heard back in high school in 1989, and I've been a fan ever since). If I had to pick one song off the album to introduce them to, it would probably be "Knock Me Down" (a very underrated song, in my opinion), but I have a strange feeling that Lex might like "Magic Johnson" the most after she hears it a few times🤣.
I remember when this album came out and how controversial it was among their fans. People were upset that RHCP had gone "soft". Personally, this is my favorite album of theirs, and IMO this is one of the best songs they ever wrote.
To me, this song represents being part of the "wave" of society, and being caught up in being a cog in a system of normality and what is expected of you. "Ever wonder if it's all for you?" Are you happy in your routine life, are you doing things outside of this routine, are you differentiating yourself as much as you need? Sometimes their lyrics tend to be a bit abstract, but that's one of the reasons why I like them :-). I hope that may help shed some light on things. Keep it up guys!
I started typing stuff then I seen the word abstract and yep that about sums it all up and is a word that describes everything big picture little picture. that's who we all are.😀👍
Live at slane castle. That's by far their best performance. Legendary. John Frusciante the real Jesus. Watch the whole concert. If you have to pick one - Venice Queen, Californication or Throw away your television.
they have a live performance on leno or king early 90s maybe 92, john has turned barely 20 years i bealive, and the sound is hard as fuck, and they are drugged as fuck, audio is superb there also.
Otherside or Dani California should be next if you did red hot chilli peppers! Should do some new rock I recommend Greta Van Fleet Highway Tune, Black smoke rising, or Safari Song.
y'all should do Otherside by RHCP! that's one of their best imo 😊 a couple others by them is worth checking out as well: Dani California Californication The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie
It's the individual parts and how good and talented they are that makes the whole so great. Deciphering lyrics is cool but usually up to interpretation. Don't let it distract you from the music.
The thing you have to appreciate about RHCP is that they are absolutely not worried about to conforming - they make wonderfully creative and unique music and they are always true to who they are. They are one of the few bands who have not changed what they do through 4 decades - they are RHCP: you either like it or don't. Love them!
They have changed, but in a good way. Old stuff is good, but they evolved and made all kinds of music since the 80s. Good musicians can make music their fans will continue to like; great musicians will make music so good that it can keep old fans (who may complain about them "selling out" otherwise), and draw in new fans, without compromising their principles or their love of their art.
Just a straight drum / bass funk jam layered with textured clean guitar stylings and topped off with a word salad of random societal observations. Great tune!
8:32 Brad: "Like, that solo didn't hurt my ears or anything." Lex: "Yeah" "But, you want it to hurt my ears, that's why you like it." Lex: "Yeah" Another classic!
Can we just all stop and appreciate a constant with many of their albums? The mixing and production. Funky Monks is an interesting watch. Their records sound great.
Don’t give up on them just yet. Californiacation is to me their best song. As well as dark necessities. They have more understanding lyrics but also comes with the fun vibe that y’all like about them.
Absolutely love your RHCP reactions! Absolutely have to review some of their super big ones! Scar Tissue, Californication, Otherside, Snow, Dani California!
ALWAYS great reactions. I like how Lexi set Brad up. "I can't remember that song" "just hum it" That look on her face is classic and Brad trying to hum... Let's say I lost it. THANK YOU
a friend of mine from school was super into them and they were touring europe in like 2002 I think. they were sold out everywhere but we got some tickets online for like twice the regular price at the other end of the country and we went to see them. long ass train ride, barely any cash left but enough weed and cigarettes for 2 days. we spent the night on park benches in a strange city smoking weed and drinking the cheapest beer we could find. in the morning we went to the concert hall and met some girls he knew from some fan forum. we stood in the very front the whole day and then ran in when they opened the door. we were in the very front of the stage pretty much the whole day and night. and from the very first minute of the pre show there was people jumping, running, ramming, tackling, hugging and falling everywhere. I've seen a bunch of concerts before that one and I've seen a whole lot more afterwards, but the energy of that concert was unique. straight after the concert we ran through the rain to the train station to catch a night train back home. I was so spent after that weekend.. plus I got pneumonia and a minor concussion and missed school for a couple weeks. top 5 concert memories :D
red hot chili peppers are great! so much groove, such a, idk. chill vibe to their music. This is what I imagined CA must feel like as a ignorant european kid when I discovered them... sunny weather, cool dudes and girls skating all day, going to the beach, doing drugs, road trips, just chilling and hanging out while listening to exactly this type of music.
I also just watched your comfortably numb video. Great vid. My absolute favourite (thats how we spell it in Canada) live concert video is the rhcp live at slane castle. The californication song is amazing
The director of the video had regular ppl come off the street in to the warehouse where they made the video. He told then to take props and make some art. He took their ideas and had the guys (RHCP) recreate those ideas for the video
Yeah, you did it! Love this one, such a fun feel good song! I hear you Lex, I´m a die hard metalhed and I like to bang my head too, but there´s something about the RHCP´s sound that is so infectious and fun to hear. I think the last line of the song really defines what the song is about: "This life is more than just a read through".....enjoy life, don´t just pass it by. Ok, for Brad definitely "Scar Tissue", one of their biggest hits and it´s your vibe. For Lex try "Around the World" they go mental on that one. And for the both of you: "Dark Necessities" from last album, it has become one of my favourites. Peace.
"East side love is living on the West on." These guys are all about California, but their vibe comes from their love of East coast funk that inspired them. This song, Dani California, Love Rollercoaster (a cover from Ohio Players) and Higher Ground (a cover of Stevie Wonder) are definitely my favorite 2 RHCP songs.
Brad n Lex, I totally understand why you aint into it as much and thats the thing about this song is the more you hear it, the more you like it. Idk how old you 2 are but back when I was in high school this came out, maybe a few years after idk but, I definitely wasnt feelin it. Now? Fuggetaboutit, i fuckin love this song. It grew on me and now I love it
Sometimes song writers add certain words and lyrics just because it sounds cool or rhymes well. There’s not some deep secret meaning to each and every song.. it just jamz and takes you out of your own world for a few minutes. And if it’s successful, it hooks
That song Brad was humming was all star by smash mouth, and you most likely heard it for the first time in the movie “shrek”. “SomeBODY once told me the world was gonna roll me, I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed”
I feel its a song about life, and chasing spiritual freedom among other aspects of life and just all aspects of life in general, and being addicted to chasing that higher thing
Fun fact, Lead singer has a lisp so his words come out incoherent. His lyrics are very random like his personality but they always have hidden messages!
Sometimes people are trying to figure out a song. I understand that. The Red Hot chili peppers are actually very very good. Keep in mind One guitar, one bass and a drum set. They make the music they produce the sound. They write the songs. So not only do they write the songs they fill it in with music etc. I am a musician. I don’t like all of their songs. However I do admit they’re pretty talented. Flee the guy that looks a little crazy is an amazing bass player. What would really shock you is if you watch him in an interview and see how intelligently he articulates what he wants to say. He is no dummy. He just lets go when he’s playing. If you want to see a great song for instrumentals and one I think you might know….Please consider playing Dark Necessities. I think he would like it
i love you guys. So weird, when i watched your first reactions, and Greg is a more settled guy, Lex is this passionate sun, and people writing such negative stuff here like "greg is like a robot". You guys are awesome, the both of you and got great chemistry :)
RHCP is about the melodies and the funk! Dont pay attention to the videos, they will only disctract you :) You have to feel the FUNK! Let Flea vibrate your soul with his funky basslines haha
A little trick: any song you struggle to understand the lyrics of if you read the lyrics as you’re listening like 5 times or so you’ll start to hear it more clearly. You’re training your brain to perceive the words better.
the Chilis are a smash of Jazz and Regae. Flea, the bassist was a Horn Player in H.S. and his dad is a huge Jazz fan. Both Flea and the Singer Anthony Akiedas have been in a few Movies playing some goofy, but integral parts to the movie itself.
The video for this song was inspired by works of Austrian artist Erwin Wurm called "One Minute Sculptures." which are a series of sculptures made in a very creative way, using the human body as a part of the composition.
One of the greatest guitar players ever. If y'all don't end up reacting to don't forget me by them live at Alcatraz, y'all have to check out best solos by John frusciante. He just joined the band for the third time. He's who takes them over the top. Every album he's put out with them has been a huge hit. He's a modern day Jimi Hendrix. Like if Hendrix wouldn't have died, he might sound a little something like this. Y'all are missing out if y'all don't check out his skills, especially live. About the only recorded song they did that actually shows it a little bit is Dani California. Well not the only one but that's the only one that comes to mind. But if y'all check them out playing don't forget me live at Alcatraz you won't regret it. Please please please please
