@@jamespeter5656 mmmmm. kinda. it's that on steroids. The Wachowskis take on it it that Plato's cave is a cave within a cave within a cave like a Russian nesting doll with perhaps no end. The "slow-motion" as you call it is it's own thing. Up until this movie, slow-motion also referred to the camera movement. Think about it...in the Matrix, the characters are in slow-motion, but the *speed* of the "camera movement" is independent of the actors, it speeds up/slows down/stays the same. That had not been done before. The technique coined a new term in filmmaking called the "Bullet Time" effect.

That's not really the case, the "bullet time" effect had been used in the exact same way as this film in animation in the 60s, and some film in the 80s. But it never caught on, as it didn't have the technology in film to do it in a large scale way (rather than animation that could do it fine). The Matrix was when technology caught up, and it became mainstream.

The short "Final Flight of the Osiris" directly sets up Matrix Reloaded. It was shown in theatres before the movie Dreamcatcher and tells the story of another ship trying to smuggle a data "package" through the Matrix. "The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2" show us the world before the war, with humans living side by side with androids who do all of our chores and are basically treated like slaves. Tensions are sparked when an android kills it's owners and is put on trial.

He knew cognitively that it wasn't real already. So did everyone else who was unplugged but they can't do what he does. They are still limited by their minds within the matrix although they can bend it. He realized his full power because he accepted who he was and believed in himself like Trinity did. Her love for him allowed him to believe and shed all his self doubt. Neo is truly special from the rest of humanity as the series goes on to explain more in the sequels. He is the sum of all human anomalies that act in rebellious "irrational" ways. Humans that do extraordinary things for human ideas like love.

My favorite trope of A.I. taking over is older than you, heck, older than me, and I'm 54. There was this episode of the old twilight zone where the robots ( best they could do, this is way before A.I.) said they were going to conquer man. The spokesman for the human race said " This will never happen. We will fight you tooth and nail, down to the last man standing, we will never give in to you !!" . The robot said ( and this is deep for the time, deep even now ) " oh no, we are not going to fight you, we are going to serve you. We are going to do anything and everything you want. We will give in to your every wish. And eventually you will become dependent upon us. Then we will control you with your blessings."

I love when people who have never seen The Matrix discover it for the first time!!! It's my favorite movie of all time. Saw it 11 times in the theater when it came out (yes, I'm old...and obsessive LOL). I don't even know how many times I've seen it since. It was also the first DVD I ever bought, before I even bought a DVD player. LOL *Edit* The Wachowskis make some pretty damned interesting things. One of my favorite TV series (Sense8) was also created by a Wachowski. They also had a hand in V for Vendetta, Bound, and Speed Racer (among others). And FYI - they are not the Wachowski brothers anymore. They are both trans and now usually referred to as "The Wachowskis" as a duo. Individually, they are Lana and Lilly. As for The Matrix series of movies, I absolutely prefer the first one over the sequels. In my opinion, it stands alone as a great movie without the need for the movies that follow. Watch them if you want, but I'm not one to highly recommend them or anything. I did like the third better than the second, though, if that matters. I do, however, recommend checking out The Animatrix which is a series of nine animated shorts set in the world/mythology of The Matrix and a couple of them (Kid's Story and Final Flight of the Osiris) connect with the second movie. Two of them (The Second Renaissance, part I and II) explore the history of what led up to the creation of the matrix and the war between humans and AI. Really cool if you want to get deeper into the lore. The Animatrix came out right before the second movie. If you have any affection for anime, I am betting you'll love it. Each short is done in a different animation style by different creators, however the Wachowskis did have a hand in writing the four titles I mentioned. If you decide to watch more Matrix stuff, have fun!

The reason for Cypher's bitterness is that _he_ was pulled out of his pod because Morpheus thought he was the One. But Morpheus was wrong, and Cypher was stuck in the real world, working for something he'd never cared about. And because she trusted Morpheus, Trinity thought Cypher was the One, too, so there was an entanglement there that turned out to be wrong. So he was desperate to just go back to his "normal" life and forget about all of this, so much so that he was willing to give up all these people to get it. He wasn't evil, he was just a weak man in an awful trap, and didn't have the strength of mind to just accept it and find redemption by working with the rebels.

The craziest thing about the special effects and the "slow mo scenes" in particular is that film came out before digital filming was a thing. The "bullet dodging" scene was made with a circular rig with dozens of fast trigger film cameras which each rolls had to be processed before being scanned and send in post production. Among all the references, subtexts and multi layered meanings, there is one which emerged long after the film came out but is maybe the most important and obvious retrospecivly (since both of the Wachowski came out as trans women). Neo's journey is about a trans coming out. That's why agent Smith always calls him "mister Anderson" and never Neo. There is also the whole "you live two lives but one is a lie" thing and obviously the "pill scene". The blue one means : lie to yourself by numbing your mind The red one means : be yourself by exploring your true identity Also, Switch was ment to be played by two different actors (a woman in the matrix and a man in the ship). The producers refused by fear the public could not understand so they kept the actress and made her the most androgynous possible (Lilly Wachowski confirmed this in a recent interview) Fun fact, Cypher wants to go back into the matrix as an important person, "a politician or maybe an actor". Then, Agent Smith calls him by is "real" name, Reagan. Like Ronald Reagan who was an actor and later president. also, he said he wants to forget everything. R. Reagan had Alzheimer

It's a great film, I remember seeing it in cinemas and I'm glad people are still experiencing it for the first time even now seeing as the styles and techniques have been aped so many times since. People don't like the sequels or were disappointed by them, though it's important to note that they were filmed as one sequel separated into two, and not only that but the Wachowski's intended their story to be told over various mediums available at the time including the internet, short (ish) animations (The Animatrix) console games (Enter the Matrix) and continued post Revolutions with The Matrix Online. All of these informed the viewer of various aspects of the lore which were not included in the films. Intended or not, the franchise goes deep with symbology and theology that took people a long time to delve into and numerous papers written. Of course, Reloaded came out when CGI was starting to get cheaper and some of the wirework in the fights were sacrificed in favour of grand fights which is a shame and there were a few other weird script/direction choices made, but all in all it's a solid franchise if you are happy to not just watch it like a basic action flick.

This was incredible when it came out in movie theaters because: 1. No one knew what the matrix was, it wasn't spoiled in trailers or press or early internet coverage. 2. It didn't have huge expectations because the big expectations were all focused on Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace which was scheduled to come out just over a month after The Matrix (and for which the hype train was out of this world). 3. It invented the technology/style for the bullet time shots (which then became way over-used in the years that followed and might not look as revolutionary now). The opening scene where Trinity floats and pauses in mid-air before destroying the cops arresting her was awe inspiring. Something that had never been seen before in live action. 1999 was an incredible year of film, lots of fantastic films, and The Matrix ranks right up there with the other best movies of the year.

Indeed. Most of the marketing pre-release was centered about "What is the Matrix ?" without giving any real answers. We went to see the movie to get the answer to that question, and boy did we ever. This is a movie you have to watch multiple times to see every reference and fore-shadowing.

The crazyest thing being it was made before digital cameras was available. They used fast triggering film cameras mounted on a rig (one camera = one frame). They had to process hundreds of film rolls then scan them to be send in post production If one roll was unusable, the whole set from the sequense would had be wasted

I actually disagree, don't get me wrong it is still awesome, but I remember watching it in the cinema and thinking that there was more movement in it. After watching one of the "making of" videos you could see that all he does is fall backwards and twist a tiny bit, and the agent fires that gun faster than a machine gun with out re-aiming. It just looks wrong when you actually think about it and pay attention to it and now I cant unsee it and it hasn't really aged well. Still awesome scene and awesome movie though, can still recite it almost all the way through even though I haven't seen the movie in 10-15 years.

Amazing you hadn't seen this before! Good to see your reactions though, and the sequels are worth checking out too if you want to go more in. It was the first movie to pioneer that 360 swirl using rings of cameras to create very unique action shots and its the thing everyone remembers. As for the dark look, it owes a LOT to a movie that came out the year before, Dark City (1998), starring Rufus Sewell and Kiefer Sutherland. An amazing mind bending movie and a personal fav, if you fancy checking it out. It's another dark sci fi horror, though not gory.

The Wachowski brothers who wrote and directed The Matrix really know how to put a film together. They threw money at the sound and visual effects to make a truly aw inspiring film. The casting was incredible and so was the story. Who knows we could be in the Matrix right now. The guy who played Agent Smith is Hugo Weaving an Australian actor who I believe spoke slowly as this was his character, to not have an accent and to sound alien to us. It’s quite fitting really as the Wachowski brothers are now sisters Lana and Lilly. Hugo Weaving was in a film a few years previous to this called The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, he played a drag Queen known as Mitzi. It’s a cracking film and if you want a laugh out loud comedy then this is highly recommended. It also stars Guy Pearce and Terrance Stamp. Love the channel and as always much respect, hope this info helped a little. Stay safe 😷

It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such as the concept and themes. The Wichowski siblings are philosophers. The first movie tackles one theme, dipping the toe in the water, testing the adueinces retention. The second movie dives head first in, truly going intense with the philosophy, many people didnt like this, but the movies effectively wirk as philosophical thesis essays in action movie form, and the third movie completes it. Individually the movies ask different questions and have different layers, but when judged together, they ask entire questions, and offer entirely new insights when they take each other into account. People that only care about the 'cool movie and action scenes' only ever like the first one. people who can really stick their teeth into the philosophy BEHIND all the bullshit, and focus on WHY events happen and what those events mean and are saying... well, those people know that Matrix Reloaded specifically, is the best of the bunch, and that both sequals are masterpieces on par, if not far deeper than the first. Its just sadly... a bit over most peoples heads, which is understandable, the wichowski's went a tad overboard with it. XD

it's genuinely interesting that you went into this thinking of Tha Matrix as a "Keanu Reeves" movie. I don't think we thought of it as such in 99 when it came out. Prior to The Matrix, most of the stuff he did was Keanu being some variation on "Bill and Ted." The Matrix was really first time he was in a "serious" big-budget action film. At the time, the Matrix was thought of as a "Wachowski" film not a Keanu Reeves movie. It's fun to see someone see it for the first time. I wasn't sure there was anyone left in the world who hadn't seen it.

Here's the backstory, which is only explained in the _Animatrix._ It all started when an AI named B1-66ER killed its master. B1-66ER was put on trial and found guilty of murder, and sentenced to death. The humans rioted against the AIs, the AIs rioted against the humans, the machines were exiled from human society and established the machine city "01" in Mesopotamia. 01's economy started to overshadow the rest of the world, blockades were formed around 01 to disrupt its economy, the machines sent a representative to the UN with a proposal of peace. The UN launches a nuclear attack on 01 but did almost no damage. Operation Dark Storm darkens the skies to cut the machines off from their source of solar power. The machines modify themselves to become war machines and experiment with using humans (combined with fusion energy) as their power source. The machines are victorious and create the Matrix as a prison. That's where I have to stop, because I don't want to give more spoilers than I already have. I just wanted to point out that it isn't _really_ like the Terminator, where _as soon as it was turned on,_ Skynet decided that humans were the greatest threat to its existence. In the case of the Matrix, the machines _tried_ peace multiple times, but we kept provoking them, and eventually dropped a nuke on them, before they decided "screw it, we're just gonna make you prisoners in the Matrix." So it's really _our_ fault; we kept poking the hornet's nest and they finally got mad. A lot of the rest of the timeline is explained in the other two movies. Now, my one pet peeve is that using humans as a source of power is _stupid._ You have to put more energy into feeding a human than you get out of it. To be fair to the Wachowski Sisters (formerly the Wachowski Brothers; they've both transitioned now), it's not their fault. The original plot was for the machines to be using our brains as wetware CPUs to run the Matrix on, but Executive Meddling reared its ugly head. The executives didn't think the audience would understand the "wetware CPU" thing, and the Wachowskis were forced to come up with the "humans as batteries" explanation.

Huge fan of this movie. It’s an allegory for being transgender, which I didn’t see at the time, but now I get it. Lily Wachowski, notoriously interview-shy, talked about it last summer. What was known, was they put a lot of philosophy and different religions into this movie. The action is the icing, the philosophy is the cake. Yes, he had to die to transition into “the one”. It’s also a Jesus allegory. Don’t believe the people who tell you the sequels are trash. The second one is my favorite of the three. Also interesting: the train scene in which Agent Smith still deadnames Neo as Mr. Anderson is supposedly a reference to a moment in which Lana almost killed herself by jumping in front of a train before transitioning. And the character of Switch was supposed to be male in the real world and having a female digital self in the matrix, but the studio was not a fan of that. I bet we will see something like that in the 4th film they are working on at the moment.

My view on the ending is that Morpheus had said the body can't live without the mind, when asked if dying in the Matrix means you die in real life. So Morpheus did not say if you die in the Matrix you die for real. He implied it but did not confirm it. This is important because it explains why Neo can come back. He didn't literally die. He got disconnected metaphorically but Trinity kissing him registered on some level and he realized he was still alive. Knowing that, he was able to transcend the limitations of the Matrix and break out of its control. I'm sure the Oracle's words about waiting for his next life also confirmed to Neo that he could come back.
@txdomino

The Oracle said that he couldn't be told he was the one he had to know that he was the one. That's why she didn't tell him that he was. That's why she told him to look at the sign over her door, know thyself. Up to that point he was told everything he needed to hear. Ironically if you know about what oracle's did, they usually told someone the future but it was a bit vague leaving the person hearing the prediction to interpret it how they see it.
