As an Afro-Latina who lived both NYC & the Washington D.C. metropolitan areas, these “food-like” products Dr. Bragg is referring to are prominent in minority communities. Some communities don’t even have a supermarket/grocery store & riddled with “Dollar” stores instead. 😱😵‍💫 I believe there is even an inflation report stating that sales and stocks in dollar stores have skyrocketed. All you see in dollar stores are “ultra-processed” food-like products…no fresh fruit/vegetables in these minority communities. On the other hand, just because something is labeled healthy doesn’t mean it is healthy. I’m 1000% convinced that eating “veggie” meat (filled with unregulated soy) and drinking almond milk (containing gut-harming carrageenan) is behind some serious gastrointestinal issues I’ve had in the past decade. I’m forced to eat healthy at this point to avoid ending up in the hospital again. If I don’t understand the ingredients, I don’t make a purchase…and this is how I silently protest the food on the shelves. Thank you Erika for bringing this topic to your platform 👏🏾🙏🏾🧿🪬✨

I hear ya, I also have gut issues that force me to eat healthy. I do drink almond milk. But I never did until the gut issues started. We're all different, though!

@ElinWinblad No, actually, I have too much acid, and the problem is it flows out of my stomach into other parts of my body.

I remember voting for a law on the ballot in California. If passed the law would require full transparency on food labels (meats included). I was shocked that it didn't pass. What parent wouldn't want to know what their child was consuming?
@WhoDaPho
@WhoDaPho 8 месяцев назад
I think it's the corrupt politicians, not that the parents don't want to have full transparency.

one thing about food companies i learnt from working in a rebranding/packaging area of a food company is that, the expensive food stores are selling exactly the same food in alot of cases but just with higher prices, they literally just change the packaging, i know this because i worked on those machines, the only food that got somewhat differently treated was the organic food but even then, it was processed through the same machines which barely got cleaned down before use i guess what im saying is that if you want to eat healthy, don't think the food in the expensive store is better, you need to do your research into that specific brand

Food preferences are ingrained in childhood and our bad decisions are now 3 generations in. Marketing is strong, but traditions are stronger. The struggle is real.

Yes agree targeting children is bad and we need to also understand that targeting teens as well as adults is bad too. Europe won’t even sell M&Ms with certain food dyes that are linked to causing cancer I think it’s yellow number 7 and red number 9 something like that but here in the good old USA we are giving it and companies are aloud. Not cool. They should be held accountable

Nestle markets powdered whole milk in the US under two brand names. Klim (spell it backwards) and Nido. Often side by side on the shelf. Nido's label is in Spanish and English, and it usually is cheaper than Klim. But the Klim packaging is only in English, and more expensive. Nice, huh?

Clarification on lactose intolerance. Over time we have decreased amount of “lactase” which breaks down lactose. The more consistent you eat it the more likely you will not become intolerant but if you don’t eat anything with lactose for a long time you’re more likely to become lactose intolerant.

Also @ the checkout , doesn’t matter what is displayed or @what height , child level , you’re the parent , you’re paying , you make the ultimate decision, not the child , tantrum or not 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙄

Homogenization is likely also a factor. Our body sees that as a foreign ingredient and doesn’t know what to do with it and off to fat storage it goes

In the US it only took what, seven years after allergend had to be listed before WHEAT (gluten) was added to the list? Ingedients are much better to compare not than they were in the 80's but the old "portion size" game is still bring play. If the are 7 servings per 18 ounce package but you teally eat a half pack...What did you eat?

Why do you immediately think it's the government's job to protect children from advertising. It's the parent's job. It's parents who choose what to feed their kids for breakfast, and it's parents who raise their kids not to have crazy tantrums when they don't get what they see on tv. Stop relying on the government to mould you into someone better. That's the job of parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles. Not corrupt bureaucrats.

In an ideal world, we don’t need government or companies to protect us, but the average person is either uninformed or misinformed. Laws would hopefully, better inform average people.
@OrphanRed
@OrphanRed 9 месяцев назад
We have more laws now regulating everything including food-safety, and yet people are generally completely ignorant about everything not revolving around their specific, narrow interest, and celebrity-lifestyles, and our food is still not safe, our water is still tainted by endocrine disruptors, people are still using microwaves that destroy nutrition in food, and non-stick pans that bend their sense of self in various ways, etc. More laws do not make for better humans. Better parenting, populations with higher impulse-control and higher average IQ, made for better humans and better societies. @@mailinglist2451
