Why do people always confuse blockchain with popular cryptocurrencies. It's so annoying. Blockchain does not cut out any middlemen, it has nothing to do with any of that. That's just how the structure is being used on most cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin was a proposed solution to permissionless finance with no governing source and without trust or double spending. Not blockchain... Bitcoin just happens to use a blockchain as part of the solution to that. Similar thing with most other cryptos.

@@madsadlab You don't need to speculate. I don't think you really understand my comment. A blockchain is a data structure that forces an append-constraint by disallowing blocks of data to be changed by requiring all future blocks to also change (think: purpose of hash, prev hash, & block height of a block in Bitcoin). Blockchain was proposed as an email spam prevention system. Although outdated and not worth the computation (this still used proof of work), you can use it for that in a centralized manner if you want. Or, a developer can just use a blockchain to enforce the append-only aspect of data for other developers. Overkill but can work. But if you want to speculate, sure. You can even use it in the same fashion as cryptocurrencies, except centralized. For e.g., consider points in arcades. Can be stored on a blockchain whilst the company uses a proof of authority to be the middleman. Again, there are alternatives to this that are used. This could be good for marketing though. The entire novelty of Bitcoin is that it was peer-to-peer. The blockchain wasn't novel, nor any component that was used when it was proposed.

@@tharwpoopAll it takes is changing one word. I only went into detail to explain why its misleading and wrong. Obviously he doesn't need to go into any detail, since he doesn't know it. But if he's going to be wrong about things, then he's going to sell ideas that don't make any sense.

@gon2225Nothing, that's the point of it. It's append-only. Nothing should be modified. If you're using an app that lets you change something or cancel a transaction, etc... it's just because the details of the transaction are not yet on the blockchain. That doesn't mean things like refunds aren't possible, since someone can just send back the money in a new transaction.
