I was raised to respect my elders, to study and work hard, and to help others whenever I could. At 80, I still open doors for women and children and give up my seat on a bus for others. Living this way has not hurt a bit.

I never had anything but wonder at my Dad. He somehow survived watching the Kamikaze that struck the forward elevator of Enterprise at Okinawa. He was standing no more than 120 feet from it. Even though he was 100% disabled, he worked to provide for us. When I got into High School he told me….I will never be able to keep you from drinking with the boys, I won’t even try, but if you EVER have to much, no matter where you are, you call me and I will come and get you…We’ll I didn’t have to call Dad until I had Graduated from HS and was ready for College. I was at a place about 45 miles from home and about 2:30 AM I called him, he asked me exactly where I was and he said he be right along. About 50 minutes later there he is, I climb into the car and the ONLY thing my DAD ever said to me about it was right then and he said “THANK YOU SON, NOW GO TO SLEEP” Both me and my older Brother went on to both retire from the US Military , him a CMD Master Chief, me a CMD Sergeant Major and my Father was at both of our Retirement Ceremonies!!!
I'm 31 and my father is 81. He raised me old school, that you say yes mam no mam, yes sir no sir. And if you make a mistake in life you own up for it, and tell the truth even if it's not the easiest thing to do. And that you work hard for what you want in life, don't be a free loader. Teenagers now only care about selfies, tik tok, and being disrespectful to not only their peers, but their elders as well. Makes me sick!
My Grandpa was in WWII and yea you didn't give no lip to them. And you never brought up the War around him. He was in France attached to General paton's tank battalion.
You don't remember me. I wrote you a letter. A letter praising you, and telling you how much I love your humor and how much I appreciate you. You sent the letter to John Boy and Billy. Weeks later I was driving to work one day, and heard John Boy reading my letter, over the air. It was the high point of my life. You are a national treasure. I love your comedy, and you are a truly a national treasure.
My dad and I had fights when I 🤔 thought something wasn't right. I was young and it didn't work out for me. He taught me to be honest with him, and he would do anything in his power to make me safe. Lies in our relationship did not happen!
When we were kids and would get off the rails, my dad would say "if you don't have morals, values, ethics, integrity and honor you ain't nothing." and " do you WANT it or do you NEED it" and "if you get arrested don't call this number cause nobody is coming to get you out." I'm 71 and I still remember his lessons.
Maybe the world is still different not the human beings. 50 years ago there was no computers 10,000 years ago no candles but we survived how is that not great humans haven't changed much it's technology and society especially in this revolutionary time in history we're at the end of the 2nd industrial revolution and approaching the 3rd with climate change and other world forces pushing the world to change socioeconomically geopolitically. I think climate change and carbon pollution is more to blame and will be to blame more if things continue

No generation is perfect. Things just change. Perspective needs to change with them, or you get this rose colored glasses nonsense.
When I got my license my mom and dad sat me down and told me, "If you go to a party, and drink. Do not drive. Call us. No matter the time. We will not say a single word to you that night, but we will have a talk in the morning." Lucky for my parents I was a bookworm and wasn't a partier. Lol. Those words stuck with me though. That no matter what, the trouble would never outweigh their love for me.
KNOW exactly what you mean Robert,, only I was the opposite,, I did the party thing and dad and both my uncle's told me" you ever busted for drinking or drugs you on your own,, busted for anything else and you were in the right, just call".... And all three have shown up,, " what did they get ya for"??.. Fighting " why"?? Because so and so called me a S.o.B...okay, let's get ya outta here...why? Cause so and so grabbed( insert her name)on the butt....okay let's get ya outta here...the likes of that..... Yep,,, 3 best men I've ever known in MY life......
I think that the Greatest Generation was the one that raised the 'Greatest Generation.' That second Greatest Generation was raised to be the people they became by awesome parents and families. Their parents deserve massive kudos!
My dad is gone now 18 years, he may not have been perfect but he had my respect always. There was never any doubt what his expectations were of me or my siblings. You always treated people with respect and you NEVER spoke back to him or our Mother. He would punish us for things that we did and spankings were one way of teaching us. That being said he never stuck us any place but on our bottoms. I was in my early 20’s the first time I accidentally swore in front of him. I just looked at him and het let it slide, I never did that again. When he passed away when I went to see him I shook his hand. I appreciated everything he ever taught me and for the example he showed me on how to live ones life.
My Dad bought me my first bottle of Boones Farm Strawberry Hill when I was thirteen, and I watched my Brother in-law teach my niece how to roll a joint when she was about seven. As you get older you tend to Glorify the past. If anything is "Raising the Kids" it's the Media. A Two-Income family is the Norm and while Mom and Pop are at work, No One is looking after the Kids unless it's the "Cleaning Lady". Grand Parents have abdicated and Wisdom is Lost. The "Greatest Generation" was the last Generation where the family was Multi-Generational, and I mean Grandparents and even Great Grand Parents, living in the same House and passing on the Wisdom. I might have seen my grand parents a total of three or four times before they died. I also, strangely enough, felt that they were the only one's that truly loved me!
Jack Willoughby@ I was very impressed with your post. I am 79 and husband 83. Married 60 years. I had 4 kids 10 grands and 6 great grandchildren. I have seen each generation change and not always for the better. One grandson ended his life ...it was so painful for him. That should be happy time of life. Not so miserable they end it. I have 2 grandchildren who don't speak to their parents. We have4 grandchildren who have nothing to do with us. I grew up with great grandmother living in same house. Visited my grandparents farm every weekend and stayed overnight. No TV. Family v already has changed and in many cases it is non existent. I was raised in church. Raised my children in church. Sometimes I feel it is a losing battle in America now. Bless you and your comments I totally agree. What kids need is less TV, no news, family time nightly and much more grandparents. My great grands don't even know who we are. It is heart breaking. 🙏💔🙏
I understand your post as well. My Grandmothers were the best! Grandfathers too but one passed when I was young. No TV in my house and I love the peace. People used to watch about an hour after supper and bed time was by the clock.Bored? Lol Then find something to do child! Lol There is always something to do .

Opening monolog is spot on! The last couple of generations may be more techno advanced and savy but, the "Greatest Generation" was smarter by a country mile.
A man's word was his honour. A simple handshake was a bonding agreement on a business transaction between two parties. No written contract was necessary. The agreement was witnessed before 2 or more people.
Just to follow up on my comments, now that I'm retired and my two sons have taken complete control over our companies, they still do business on a handshake first as an agreement, then that's followed up with all the legal paperwork required to seal the deal! To me it's a shame this has to be done because if you need more than a handshake to seal a deal, then don't do the deal AT ALL!!! TRUST IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WHEN IT COMES TO A PARTNERSHIP!!
Common sense is called Folk Ontology in philosophy. Its a widely discredited phenom blamed for lots of misunderstandings. You are acting entitled. You believe others should act a certain way, in line with your values, and if they dont... you say they have no common sense. Rough.
We will mourn the loss of our elders, but we got to make those changes to see the light again. I feel that even the most wayward of us tend to find our way home, so to speak. We see the light, now we just have to walk towards it
Your sure right we don't have Thanksgiving dinners now that Granny and Mama are gone. No Sunday dinners. My kids don't have time for this kind of thing, they don't listen because they can't put the phone down long enough. And they think they know everything so they don't have to listen. Thats a shame I can tell them all about their Great Grandparents and Grandparents and Uncles and Aunts. Picnics, Hunting, Fishing trips. The kids are all so busy doing nothing that they don't have time to do anything. At least I got to experience a time when families use to all get-together and have Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and picnics. Family members came from hundreds of miles away to be together they didn't have a lot and in a time when cars and tires were not that reliable. Now many family members just live across town and they can't come to visit. No one has time anymore Yes they would if they would put those phones down. I think it's sad how no one care to get together as a family anymore.
For the last 70 years, life has gotten progressively better and people have gotten progressively softer and dumber. Emphasis on the word "progressive"ly

It makes me sad to think that the Greatest Generation is most likely the Last generation of their kind. Every generation since has gotten a little worse. And here we are now seeing what the current generation of youth is bringing to the table. I'm 39 and right on the cusp of being considered a Millennial, and I wish I could have been a part of the Greatest, despite all the horrible things they had to endure like the Great Depression and WWII. I have so much admiration and respect for them. It's sad to think that soon no one from that generation will be alive anymore. Their values and way of thinking will die with them, much to the detriment of us all.
My Dad was an Ironworker. Welder on high steel. Bought me my first shotgun for Christmas. I was nine. Took me fishing. Let me camp out in the woods alone. He passed 2 years ago at 92. Ive accepted it. But just as with Mom. Ill never get over it. ❤
When I started driving my dad always said if you get tore up call me at any time and I'll be on the way. Me and him still hardly get along 12 years later but anytime I've needed him he has been there to get me.
Back when that generation were getting married , building or buying a home then raising our generation those words meant something and even during my time working and raising my two these words , honesty , integrity, respectful and dependable still were used but I believe some stopped associating those words with people because if they felt they were not worthy of those traits no one could live by them. The changes in my children's generation during there school years compared with outs is as different as night and day.. I asked my kids on occasions If there classes recited the Pledge of Allegiance and heard no. No praying. reading from Bible, I am almost 64 and the vast majority of my days are behind , not in front of me. I wonder what this world will be like after my time and my children will faced with. I don't know why or how school aged kids and young adults like my two have gotten so far away from the core values we had permanently printed inside our skulls. Like the pride and love we had etched in our skulls.for our friends and families and flag and country.
I hate to admit this BUT it wasn't until my dad passed I realized-HE WAS MYBEST FRIEND!!! Maybe admiting this will save some body else from carrying the quilt I do!
I took Daddy's pink '59 Cadillac Coupe Deville to Denver one weekend while home on leave from the Us Army and had a bit of fun running a Challenger and smokin him with that big block Caddy... Daddy had to say " you blew the cobwebs out of her didn't ya, I sheepishly grinned and nodded
At twelve years old, I drove my dad home from the bootlegger on Sundays, several times. Later on, when I was 17, he came and got me when I called him to come get me because I had too much to drink. No butt whipping. Bonding! I drove him home from a men's supper one night. Mom and I extracted him out of the car onto a blanket and dragged him into the house out of the cold. We all bonded that night. He passed away later that year in 1975. I wish he were alive later on, when I was 30. I had to bond with the Judge and SR-22. Thanks for reminding me of how much I miss my Dad.
My own father passed in 2016 at the age of 86. We had a close, warm, loving relationship that manifested itself in insults, put downs, the occasional death threat, and all around general nastiness.
My Daddy never whipped me, I’ve seen him whip most of my brothers and sisters, but he said he never had to whip me, but it was a whole different story. The reason Daddy never had to whip me was because if he looked at me like he was upset, or angry with me, it broke my heart and I was running to him begging him to forgive me and I’d never do it again, and I didn’t. That only happened a few times. I loved my parents very much, but grew up respecting them and their rules. I raised my daughter the same way (almost). She is m only child and I didn’t want her to be afraid of me and I’m proud to say she raised her children about the same way, and they have turned out great. Now they’re having children and I sincerely hope they will follow the same path. So kids today don’t have to be little monsters, they just need parents with a firm attitude and if needed a firm hand, occasionally.
My dad had his initials on his belt so that I could look in the mirror and know who it was that whipped my @$$. I'm 40, never been to prison, didn't turn out an alcoholic or drug addict, and have nothing but respect for my dad. If he were still alive, I would still be hearing about how my dumb@$$ friends are gonna get me in more trouble in 5 minutes than I can get out of in a lifetime
My father and mother were teenagers in the great depression. Quit school to go to work to help their families. Dad served in World War 2. After war was over, worked at the same company until he retired. Respect was something he EARNED. Never raised his voice or his hand, yet we behaved so we wouldn't disappoint him. Momma was a homemaker, squeaking $3 worth of goods from a single dollar. And we thrived!
Yes !! So true !! I'm old school where dad worked and mom stayed home and took care of us !!" Today both parents have to work that's the problem but have too the cost of living Now !! Discipline, honesty and respect for yourself and others and your elders!!
And work for what you need at 16 my dad stopped buying me anything so I had to work!! I worked hard and every boss I had saw that and gave me a raise !! No laziness in our family !!
How true how true. Dad is gone now but sure can remember I was more afraid of the beating I would get if I broke house rules than of being arrested by sheriff. After going on a blind date guy was driving me home & missed several exits. He pulled over & tried to have his way. Growing up with brothers I wasn't having it. Busted his jaw, ribs & eye socket & truck window. Walked appx 5-6 miles home & missed curfew. Mom was waiting but dad had gone to bed. Told her what happened. Next morning sheriffs were at door & dad answered it. They were looking for me. I will never forget dad's look. Told sheriff's (dad @ door) what happened. Dad said we were done & no other mention of incident was ever made. Just glad I lived without dad killing me, never thinking of the harm I could have sustained by anyone else other than dad. Would have preferred to have gone to jail than face dad.
bonding alright my pops left me in jail until i saw the judge! disorderly conduct $75 fine $15 court cost but i spent the night in jail and haven't been back!
