Admittedly I don't know a whole lot about the Porsche 914 except that it doesn't share the iconic lines of the Porsche 911 I love so much.
Well, it turns out there are big fans of the Porsche 914 out there, and I had the unique opportunity to interview one of them when I was in Amelia Island, FL at Werks Reunion 2020.
While I was mainly at Werks to park my Porsche 911 993 in the corral and check out the gorgeous array of many generations of Porsches, I was intrigued to see the number of Porsche 914's there. After all, 2020 was "the year of the Porsche 914" so it made total sense that they would be there in all colors and years.
Jim, the gentleman whom I interviewed, shares a few key insights about the car such as:
- How it compares to his 1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera coupe
- Why he wanted to specific color combination he has
- How his Porsche 914 purchasing process was a bit of a leap of faith
Regardless of my personal feelings about the Porsche 914, I love seeing other owners' passions for their cars so this interview brought me joy. I hope it does the same for you.

About My Channel:
Rennthusiast (formerly Bavarian Enthusiast TV) is for the most part a Porsche 911 channel centering on experiencing air cooled Porsches, but will also feature other vintage, analog vehicles I add to the collection. The channel is the result of my deep passion for air cooled Porsches, my interest in the air cooled Porsche community, my obsession with modding, improving, buying and selling cars in general and my desire to put myself out there on RU-vid and share these passions with other enthusiasts.
As I continue to build this channel, I'll be adding more cars to the mix, and will likely branch out beyond the German sports car genre as is the case with this video. Why? Because I LOVE cool collector cars and as my interests morph and change, so will this channel.
As of the date of this video, the collection includes a 1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe, a 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Coupe, a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser and....a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80 (no it’s not German but it’s been a bucket list vehicle for me so it’s now in the collection).

I have a Original 914-6, they are a overpowered Go-Cart. Swapped the Tail shift for a Side shift, Installed ZD final drive gear, added a Guard LSD, Boge gas shocks. I finished a full mechanical restoration right before the virus hit. She was already scheduled to get shipped to Europe so I could Drive her on the Ring and the Autobahn. That's my engine in the Icon.

A 914 was my first exposure to Porsche. One summer day when I was somewhere around 14, a work colleague of my dad visited the house in his green 914. He took me for a ride; after a while he pulled over and said it’s your turn to drive - wow! Some 30 years later, a 914 became my first Porsche. I loved it - but no galvanizing - summer driving only. As Jim said, they handle wonderfully and are really raw / visceral. However, except for the 914-6, they are inertial cars with a really low first gear and can be challenging on an entrance ramp. Many, many happy memories with my wife and with my son - the 914 will always have a place in my heart. When we modified my 964, several of the mods aimed at bringing it closer to raw visceral engagement I remember from the 914.

My first car - 1971 914. My dad and I paid $1000 for it in 1985 off a service station parking lot where it had been sitting on flat & rotting tires. We painted it, got it back into running condition & I learned to drive in it. Ended up selling it when it started smelling a bit like gas - believe it was one of the first years with Bosch Fuel Injectors & they had a bad habit of catching fire! Very fun car to learn to drive on!

This was a great video, I enjoyed the interview. And I think it was very informative too, in an entertaining way that kept me wanting more. I wouldn’t mind seeing more Porsche 914 content either, it is a neat little car.

Love the interviews! That said, also really appreciated your video about Tail of the Dragon. I think you’re coming up with some nice ideas for discussion about air cooled Porsche’s. Keep it up!

David, they don’t have a really low first gear but the same 3.09:1 that the 356s and 911s till at least the 915 trannies came in. And maybe after that. But I’m not a 911 guy and the closest one of my eight Porsches came was a ‘68 912. The 914 had a .79:1 overdrive for fifth gear and a .95:1 fourth gear that other Porsches often used for top gear. Porsche was trying to coax every MPG out of it they could.

Loved my 914. Takes a while to get it up to speed but fortunately you don't need to slow down for the turns.

My first Porsche love back in the mid 1970's was the 904 GTS. Really wanted one, but as a young 20 something, no way could I afford one...then or now. Plus, I realized later, when I had the pleasure to meet a real one and get to know it...I couldn't fit comfortably in one anyway. Then I focused on the production, mid-engined 914, and fell in love again. To many, it's a quirky, odd looking car and until recently, was referred to as a NARP. Got my first one in 1986, a '71 1.7l. Have had about about 6 or 7 since. About 12 years ago, I was able to purchase a real 1970 914/6. I did PCA DE events with it and used it as my wekend fun toy. I wanted to eventually do vintage racing and was thinking about converting my original 914/6 into a "GT" using all of the parts that makes a "GT" a "GT". As prices started to go up on real 914/6s, I bought a 914/4 and coverted it to a mild racing 914/6 "GT" ish race car. Love them both, but getting on the track with a mildly potent 91i six in the engine bay and with a racing suspension...,well....now that is an experience, especially when "NARPs" pass 911s....but it's all in the family. And make no mistake, the 914 is a real Porsche, completely designed by Porsche, not VW. Yes, there were many VW parts, just like other past Porsches, but it was all Porsche engineered. By the way, in PCA Club Racing, in the "Vintage" Class, the top contenders are usually heavily modified 914s with a sprinkling of 911's from time to time. Here's one of my racing videos ..... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m8Dfn1eWiTU.html

Hi Will, this model might have marketed as an entry level model. Small , light weight, basic no frills, with a small engine. How does one work on the engine with that tiny access hatch, unless it is accessible thru the trunk? Nice shade of red. BTW, hope the company is doing ok in these uncertain times. Keep up with the great work. Greg

Hi avioncamper - the engine of a 914 is fairly low down from the top of the car, so you can reach quite a bit though the top. That being said, just like 911s and Cayman / Boxster, lots gets done from underneath.

Will, Did you ever get a chance to drive a 914?

The only thing there good at is a cool weekend / autocross driver. Plus there really cheap the (non 914-6 ones). In stock form there nothing to write home about, but its a good platform to start a track car with.

My first Porsche in high school 1974 smoked a lot of the devil weed in it. Later on 1974 Targa!

Yelp, I love my Porsche's but there is good reason the typical 911 owner gives the rest of us such a bad name.
