I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tries a handheld again in a few years.
I used to love playing games like echochrome, PAIN, Journey, Flower, PixelJunk, LocoRoco, NobyNobyBoy, and all the other Japanese-centric PSN games that were on PS3. It was fun to play them in-between the big releases and keeps a constant stream of content coming.
Nintendo and Microsoft's be like let's do this homies. Sure you can take back Banjo and bring Master Chief to Smash only if you put gamepass on Switch.
Honestly I can understand why Sony would do this. I am not saying it's great. But looking at their perspective PlayStation 3's architecture was designed mostly in Japan and it was because of the consoles difficulty to develop for (among other things) that hurt Sony that generation. PlayStation 4 on the other hand had a lot of western influence from the architects to the feedback they were getting from western developers in how to design the system and it resulted in the PS4 being the success it was. So my theory is that is Sony is trying to appease the developer community that has more influence in the direction of game development. Which makes sense, I think early on the PS3 the only big profile 3rd party developers praising the PS3's architecture were Komani and Square Enix, Konami lost it's relevance that generation while Square-Enix fumbled that generation. So there were really no other development studio to sing's Sony praise and it ended up hurting their reputation.
The Reason why PS4 was successful is because it had basically no Opposition for 4 years in a row due to Microsoft and Nintendo screwing up their console launches (the former by attempting to implement the always online culture in the western world (Something that, while today is basically standard deu to how everything has shifted, back then was regarded as something out of norm in a negative way) as well as the price and the latter by screwing up the marketing campaign of the Wii U and losing the Western (and some of the eastern that became westernized like Square and Capcom) Third Parties support). it wasn't until Switch arrived in 2017 and Xbox started focusing on Game Pass (now treating the console as a Vehicle for it) that competition really picked up the slack with the Switch still taking the gaming world by storm when it comes of hardware sales not to mention that Mobile and, to a minor extent, PC becoming so relevant now that gaming companies can't ignore anymore (even Nintendo and Microsoft making headway into Mobile while Sony is making headway to the PC)

There’s a reason PS3 went from the bottom to the top at the end of the seventh generation in such a short amount of time, not luck or magic. Sony is still making a shit-ton more money than Nintendo ever will with the amount of games, subscriptions, and exclusive sales they have. PC gaming will never be as big as console gaming. I’ve learned two things as a PC Gamer: Your card will never be utilized to its full potential and you are better off getting a card equivalent to or a tiny bit better current generations strongest console since most games are unoptimized pieces of garbage and that Steam sales suck now.

Why God Of War (2018) worked was also due to the fact that it was heavily promoted and gave everyone expectations that it eventually live dup to. Doesn't mean anything because. Japanese audiences aren't buying home consoles enough. Xbox won't have any impact in Japan. Japan's culture is complex. Sony and Nintendo roots in Japan is something Microsoft/Xbox won't achieve. Japanese audiences is very hard to get if you're outsider.

Best example is the Disgaea series. It startet on PS2 and is now, with the 6th mainline installment, on Switch. Alsp Sony´s censor philosophy is just idiotic. Smoking weed, human reproduction and deleting humans in realistic graphics is ok! But cutting off an arm in anime-ish graphics is a no-go!
You can buy the new disgaea on the switch but you must have a Japanese account on your nintendo switch because it's on the Japanese eshop not the American eshop

It's all about money and expanding a more reliable source of income. Western market along with European market buys more of their tech. Again, cooperations are not people, there's no emotional attachment to x person/place. They only care about making money.
Sony isn't invincible. They lost their lead in the consumer electronics market. Sony Pictures struggled. Dunno if their music label is still strong. And even in video games they had tough times like when it took the PS3 more than 6 years to beat the Xbox 360 in sales and the fact that the xbox brand is weak in japan helped a lot. One of the reasons why Sony must stay strong in the Japanese market. And Microsoft despite being almost irrelevant in Japan is bringing Japanese games like Nier, Yakuza games, and Dragon Quest to Xbox.

The dedicated fans care about Ninja Gaiden etc. If something else comes along and steals The Last Of Us's thunder they'll be scrambling. There's a reason enthusiasm for Halo and Gears Of War have cooled as people go towards Fortnite, Overwatch etc. Sure they still have dedicated fans but not nearly as big an audience as they once did. There's a reason the PS2 did so well and it was because of its diverse library. Homogenising is stupid.

Sony's IDENTITY is changing with this new PS5 generation. Shutting Japan Studios down. Exclusives going to PC. Not actually "believing in generations". It's such a shame, but on the other hand, we've seen the gaming industry make many disgusting decisions with online passes, loot boxes, cutting content for DLC and season passes, and 'games as a service'. We'll basically have to rely on Nintendo and Atlus for the Japanese greats. Thankfully (?) I'm getting older, and perhaps it will soon be time for me to stop worrying about gaming as much as it does now lol.
What happened to Japan Studio is unfortunate but expected, the team didn't release a major hit commercially in the last decade. Any company wouldn't wait this long for a struggling team like this. One positive result is more focus on Team Asobi and more Astro games. If half the gamers crying over this decision actually bought Japan Studio games Sony wouldn't have to shut it down.
It's true. If they would just buy Japan studio games it wouldn't happen but Sony is gonna rebuild it from the ground up again and the external development is there so games like Bloodborne 2 or demon's souls 2 is a possibility
Bloodborne was one of the reasons the PlayStation 4 had such a skyrocket start. As mentioned, Japan Studio was also a supporitve studio and acted as a producing studio, giving smaller studios they work with huge opportunities. That's over now, because Sony is done with Japan. Not since yesterday though. The marketing, be it their film studios, music and now games, shifted away from the japanese market. Sony Headquarters, higher ups and stuff like that is now based in the US and Europe. The PlayStation brand manager and big boss (the dude who hates old games and thinks of the children) is also a westerner. When it comes to first party, Sony wants to be Marvel. Bigger, better and more groundbreaking than it's predecessor. And yet, Marvel shows with WandaVision what's possible with a smaller budget and a fresh idea and concept. It's not my decision to judge the Jim Ryan Era o PlayStation. But what I wanted to say, they ****** off a lot of smaller japanese studios with their new guidelines for Anime-Gmes (Violence in Anime-Games and naughty content). They The HQ in California refused to communicate in japanese with these smaller studios. And I do think many people lost their jobs with the end of the Japan Studios. You will only hear the big names who left Sonys japanese divisions a while back, but many talented people were kicked out too. What Sony has done to it's japanese divisions is nothing else Konami has done with the exception that Konami is completely done with console gaming. I will surely miss Japan Studios, but this one here wasn't unexpected because their focus on the western market was clear. Shutting down the studios to save ressources is a logical step. Sonys plan is to get the japanese Third Party studios to them like Square Enix and Capcom with either console exclusive content or timed exclusive releases. I don't like Jim Ryan but you cannot say he is a bad business man. He sure have a plan with PlayStation but currently, they are just feeding scalpers due to the unforseen PlayStation 5 stock shortage. That's a huge problem, by the way.

as someone (in the US) that favors PS and Nintendo both because of their blockbuster 1st party games and for their hidden gems, this is incredibly disappointing. The fact that Sony changed the X-O button layout was tone deaf and culturally insensitive. It was a move that doesn't benefit Western gamers and alienates Japanese gamers. I hope that enough fans show backlash to Sony for this. Yes, Playstation is a global brand, but it is a Japanese brand first. Instead of gutting that market Sony should figure out how to maximize it, even it does cost a bit more in the short term.

Spoilers: Japanese audiences aren't buying enough home consoles and or software from said consoles. The citizens are more into phones and mobile devices like the Switch. Western and European colonies buy the most gaming consoles than Japanese audiences. Sony moving away from Japan and into the Western side is just a business move.

Sony's so-called "First-party" are as boring and predictable as Nintendo's at this point, those smaller japanese Gems were one of the reasons I still buy Playstation instead of XBOX and Nintendo is mostly for their exclusives (Especially 3rd party exclusives like Monster hunter stories 2, rune factory v, Shin megami tensei V and so on...)
Last games they made were knack 1+2 and it flopped. They kept the astro bot team and I'm glad because astrobot was one the best vr games I've ever played

I am a big GB-fan but I think you‘re over-analyzing it this time. What Sony is doing I‘d call ‚adapting‘ to current trends - It seems that this ongoing Japanese mobile/Switch(handheld) cycle is impossibe to break - I think Japan is a good example of how things could have globally developed if the mobile market would have succeeded over traditional console gaming.

Sony has always been a Japanese company, a lot of their games come from Japan, I really can't see SIE dropping 3rd party Japanese games off like that. Hell, Final Fantasy by Square Enix is big in Japan as well as America. Just knowing Sony dropping Japan is bad Mojojujo.
Yet it isn't only on Switch. It has been on all generations of PlayStation among few other platforms such as IOS and Switch. I hope we at least get another Everybody's Golf game (technically made by Clap Hanzs). I feel like Sony never held Japan Studio in as high a regard as their big western studios. So many beloved games came from Sony Japan Studio, and now we will never get another game like Gravity Rush 2 and Puppeteer from 2012.

I think the gaming industry is a mess forcing people to buy computers or console to play games when you should be able to simply use a tv or phone, they refuse to integrate the hardware for a traditional game experience. The actual games are developed in such a strange way games like minecraft visuals for some reason are steered towards baby's and the gameplay loop is universal, this is so strange! The game is made by adults as well? Then there's games like mortal kombat one of the most good looking games and there ripping each others spines out and heads off and all the kids love it. I would of thought game developers would be making creative games like minecraft with graphics like mortal kombat, and combat games like mortal kombat more appropriated like tekken. And another bizarre thing is why is dumb graphics almost always related to childrens games is this to categorise children as stupid and provoke silly behaviour. And don't forget it's adults that make these games does that make them pedophiles, kids should make kids games and graphics should be standerdised so game developers are forced to progress with graphics so weather games are being made for a child or adult the graphics content should be always good. A logical approach to game development is needed for healthy games industry, that will creates the best entertainment. A good current day game for children is rachet and clank or dragon quest builder, but even DQB has dumb silly graphics ratchet and clank is a very good example of a good kids games. A good adult approach is gta5 or skyrim. Games like minecraft should not be allowed to be developed because there to unhinged there is no standards and creativity is disgraced and portrayed as a addictive game loop. It's games like minecraft that proves that game development needs censorship.

When corporations start releasing physical copies of complete games on day of the game's release without patching, downloading, microtransactions, dlc and other toxic idiocy that had been brought over in the passed 10 years that killed gaming, only when that stops then will people buy games again. Until then good luck desperately milking toxic waste with braindead individual zombie consumers on small branches of the market. We use to buy games that could be called quality products respectful for their time now we have apsolutely nothing worth to buy at all. When they start releasing quality products billions of people worldwide will start buy games again. This is why people stopped playing games and why retro games boomed and keep booming.
Without the Japanese studio the Playstation may as well just be an Xbox. Now we will just see more 3rd person action-shooters with lootboxes and extra wokeness. That is why I had over 1000 Playstation 2 games...

You're right when Sony closed Studio Liverpool, Evolution, and Guerrilla Cambridge it was a sign they were done with the UK and since then they've been unable to release any games that appeal to the UK market.... Sarcasm aside, I don't think Studio Japan was even half as productive as you guys seem to paint. The 400 plus employees managed to put out 2 knack games and gravity rush 2 in an entire 8 year generation (With the first Knack being developed for launch). In contrast the 250+ Naughty Dog put out Uncharted, Los Legacy, and The Last of Us 2 as well as in house remastered the first game. Plus it can't be cheap maintaining that size of a studio in Japan for "keeping the flavour of Japanese games".
