@@godofthecripples1237 they keep a very clear and important distinction between sexual assault and sex. Assault is hilarious slapstick Consensual sex is a big no-no.
there's an episode (i believe it's literally called mask) where Kedamono does his laundry which is all his masks and apparently they have the power to really feel the emotion it represents and Popee wears a few and turns into different things and creatures, one of my favourites!
Imagine being a tired Japanese parent who had to suffer through like three hours on a train to get home, and you walk in and your kid is watching *this*
Yea, it's a very creative way to give a wide range of expressions to an animal character without doing a lot of animations for them while still giving them a lot of charm.
When I was in middle school, me and my friends had to do a presentation of how media effects children and we used this show as an example. Like yeah it’s violent and maybe not meant for younger kids, but I never understood how BRILLIANT the series is.
What grade did you get on the presentation, because if we ever have to do a presentation about different culture differences in media or something, might use popee as a example
You beat me to the punch. It baffles me that there exists a real show that is the spitting image of a hyperviolent parody of a kids show in a satire cartoon.
that would actually scare the fnaf out of me when i want to watch doctor who on my local station (and get this, the station doesn't even have ads during the airing of the show)
As a dedicated fan of PTP who has also uploaded all the episodes, I can say that you are absolutely right about the source of the mass-dislikes. An absurd amount of young kids click on the videos by accident and go crying to their parents about the violence. In all fairness, I understand where the parents are coming from, but they should really be watching their children better. An iPad screen does not equal effective parenting. As long as you’re the proper age, and/or a fan of dark comedy, this is a great series to binge. It’s absurd on another level, and worth being remembered for years to come. It’s good to know that Saberspark and I have similar tastes.
Even if there's an app for it,this type of stuff is still seen by kids and several animated content is affected by it as well(removing comments). These parents struggle to understand that internet is not the same as TV.
I absolutely adore Kedomono, his design is so good, you pointed out the mask falling to change the emotions, as well as purple being my favorite color.
She is actually alive! She just left them. Also, Popee doesn't believe that Papi is his real father and thinks that his real father somewhere out there, while Papi doesn't even remembers Popee's real mother and thinks that the nanny that raised Popee is his real mother. So yeah, the back story of those characters is as insane as the show.
This reminds me of this one manga about depressed kindergarden teacher trying to pretend to be happy before children but having existential crisis every second of the day its called uramichi oniisan
The reason that Popee's sister never appeared on the show is either she's too scared to come out of her room or her and her mother left those two lunatics years ago.
She could probably kill Popee atleast once since he thinks shes a good person and that definitely would give her an advantage that could only be used once 💀🤚
Surely you do not mean Ryuji Matsuda, because actually he went on to do quite a lot of other shows, Mr. Stain being one of the other popular and well known shows... Wow, RU-vidrs these days like any comment... even if they are not sure what you are even talking about...LOL
Ryuji: " I finished it" Network: "oh, you finished the kids show we paid you for?" Ryuji: " wait, was it supposed to be for kids?" Network: .... Ryuji:... Network: "Screw it, we will air it anyway"
This made me laugh so hard and now I love it 😭 also if you like this, watch happy tree friends, it’s very similar but more characters and way more death :)
Fun fact: popee doesn't actually kill or harm kedamono for being better than him, popee just has such a massive ego but is also lonely. And kedamono is a wolf trying to be human, so he mimics popee as an attempt to be more human and less wolf. So, you have one that is lonely without the other but still harms for ego points and the other who needs the other to learn the ways of being human.
A lot of the confusion about who this series is aimed for comes from the fact that it was aired on Kids Station, but despite the name, it's not exactly a channel that is aimed primarily at young audiences, this is the same channel that aired Hetalia after all.
"Your not here for Pixar level quality, your here to watch an anthro wolf wearing orange shorts and a mask drag around the lifeless corpse of an impaled and bloody clown!" Best sentence ever
@@akiishitster1742 exactly! Fuck the theme song still rings through my head to this day lmao. Poppee needs a Netflix installment or something because I wanna see more.
Her wiki actually explains that she’s mischievous and a trickster, and feigns innocence in front of her brother, but kedamono knows of her true nature.
this video is what got me into Popee The Performer and I couldn't be happier knowing this show exists. I've binge watched the whole thing like 8 times and I don't think I'm getting bored of it anytime soon
The CGI animation of _Poppee the Performer_ looks like it's something out of the dark side of the Internet but it has some great charm to it no matter how uncanny it was. It surprised me that it even has a fandom.
@@lotteyansson3960 lol I was absolutely obsessed with it when I was younger, I still am. Might’ve ruined my sanity. I still love the show- idk if I should be concerned or nah, because it made me like gore and bloody type of things-
As a 90s kid from Japan, I can testify that this was a kids show and I used to watch it with my parents. It's actually one of our favorite shows! I can still sing the gibberish intro😂
Why didn’t he just say “I don’t want to be killed” Remember, he can’t kill someone without consent! Idiots 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ (IM JOKING PLEASE DONT COME AFTER ME-)
It's like if gintamas creator were to make an exaggerated version of gintamas and then take all the mature stuff out and label it a kids show and add different characters
I remember one time when I was like 10, I woke up in the middle of the night to this show playing instead of the Netflix I fell asleep to and started crying because I couldn’t find the remote to turn it off 😁
American parents: turns on cocomelon Christian parents: turns on veggie tales Japanese parents: turns on Popee the Performer We all know who has the greatest childhood
@@legustalokinkynasty659 I'm just sincerely shocked that any child would enjoy it. I know that would have given me lots of nightmares as a kid, especially since monsters Inc traumatized me at 3 years old
this show is on another level... is unique , and his dark humor make it more fantastic... i don't love dark humor or something like that but this show is amazing. (i never seen a show like that)
When I first heard of this show, I thought it was just one of those creepy RU-vid shows. Like Salad Fingers and Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared. I never thought it was an actual tv show
That "putting Popee in Papi's stomach" thing is a whole totally different fetish.... I can't believe they didn't notice that when they aired the show....
Popee The Performer (ポピーザぱフォーマー) is a series of 3DCG shorts produced for Kids Station, one of the all-anime satellite stations in Japan. The show was produced by Zuiyo Co Ltd, and created by husband-wife team Ryuji Masuda (writer) and Wakako Masuda (art director, art design, and character designer). The music was composed by Osamu Tezuka, and the vocals within the main theme and OST belong to Aoyogi Tsuneo. The series is known for it's black comedy, dark and disturbing themes, morbid imagery, bizarre and surreal storylines, and overall creepy tone. The series has 39 episodes split equally among 3 seasons. There is also a manga drawn by Wakako Masuda The show follows Popee, an apprentice clown, and his assistant, Kedamono, as they attempt various circus acts and go about their daily lives as performers. Things have a way of going wrong, however, usually due to Popee. Their mentor and Popee's father Papi, is no help to the bizarre scenarios the characters end up in.
I went to a con in 2018, not long after I discovered the show on RU-vid, and a girl was cosplaying as Popee. Full bunny suit and big feet, blonde wig, was amazing. I went "You're Popee the Perforer!" And she was taken aback, as though she wasn't expecting someone to recognize who she was. After I got a pic with her, I heard her friend say to her "I'm happy for you."
that has a reason, not because they were lazy but because Kedamono hides his face due to the fact he “has the face of his mother”. His mother is a giant white wolf with blood red eyes, pretty terrifying to be honest. He also wants to be far from a wolf and more like a human
Earthworm Jim has blood, deaths and guns and it's rated E. Especially Earthworm Jim 3D. Decapitating cows which wield rifles that shoot actual bullets, a 6-shot revolver you can get in World 4, 99% of the characters that you meet and "save" die, usually crushed by a fridge, grinded into a mess of bones or even blown up in a explosion. Plus Earthworm Jim 1 had Queen Slug-for-a-Butt brutally explode into a mess of bones and organs. Also, EWJ3D has blood when you decapitate the cows, or kill a vampire or an alien enemy.
In Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, a character is about to freeze you solid and almost definitely kill you, and would have succeeded if not for another character saving you.
I'm super late to this video but just a reminder this show aired between 2000 and 2003, and 3D animation got big around the 90s. Especially on the budget this had, this was very much ahead of it's time.
Poppee the performer was aired on a kids thingy because the creators didn't know what the targeted demographic was. I know for a fact if it was aired in America all the moms would be screaming. Also I MUST buy the PTP merch NOW
American censorship has always been a joke..... The entire South Park movie with "Blame Canada" was due to Canadian censorship being much less strict. Although I am unsure now how much that's changed.
I'm so glad he's finally talking about this goldmine of a show. It's what officially got me into animation and kicked off my RU-vid career. This show is my everything.
Hey guys, quick reminder that the original creator of Popee is Wakako Masuda, Ryuji’s wife, she had a huge part in the creation of this show and still makes art of the characters as she’s in the process of making a spin off with PTP and characters from her other works!
Just search Wakako Masuda on Twitter and she'll show up, I've been following her account for like a year now and she uploads content pretty regularly :)
Fun fact: his wife still makes comics for the characters, and Popee is now a scientist with Kedamono being a father :) edit: omg tysm for all the likes!!! This is so cool :D
@@lcdc_azuralie as was said, the creator wasn't told at first it was going to be aired for kids. My guess is that he figured it out AFTER he had already made an episode and it had been aired, nothing bad happened (for some reason), and so he just said *"...... well, f#%k it. Everybody seems to like it. I'll make more."*
I watched this shit when i was younger cause i had the japanese channel when it aired. It was so fucking scary and i loved it and i dont know why. P.s I was one of the people who recommended it
Strangely enough, Popee doesn't go entirely insane until season 2. All of season one aside from the banned episode is fairly tame compared to the rest of it.
@@MintMaxer its not really a character arc per se, more like the violence just gets ramped up in the later seasons. in season 1 Popee would kill Kedamono in a way that usually related to magic tricks, for example he sawed Kedamono in half in the pilot, killed Keda twice w/ knife throwing and killed himself accidently via sword swallowing. in season 2 the violence happens as a *result* of the magic tricks, for example Papi tries to show off his kung fu and accidently slices the sun in half and chaos ensues, etc. for season 3 the magic tricks are just kind of a side show and the violence doesnt happen because/during the tricks, its just increasingly ramped up insanity.
@@MintMaxer he just does. he jumps super high in the sky and we only see his sillhouette in front of the sun before he slices it in half. then half of the circus grounds gets covered in darkness and highjinks ensue.
I love the originality in kedamono’s design. The masks are so cool. Each one seeks to have been hand drawn by him. And whenever he removes one it shows his current face. It’s really neat.
I think ReBoot beat them to it, with Hexadecimal, the insane chaos-ridden virus --- but they were aiming for something rather different and much creepier... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-znrl023KLL4.html
Kedamono's the best character in Poppee; the way they use his masks is really clever. He's a genius straight-man to Poppee's chaotic insanity. Papi's good too. And Poppee. And the little alien dude. But Kedamono's the best.

My friend told me I should watch this show, because "it's so funny you'll love it!" I now question his sense of humor.
I watched this show when I was 13, it honestly traumatized me at the moment and somewhere after episode 5 I thought: "I don't want to watch this show anymore" and then I went and watched all the episodes I could find. I don't know what's with this show but it's like a drug you can't get enough of. I ended up loving it tbh
I actually binged this entire show when I was 13 and loved it. Although, I sat through all of happy tree friends when I was younger, so I might be a bit messed up.
I started watching this show as a joke while streaming to my friend on discord. Fast forward a couple months, I have 3 Popee the performer posters, a custom made popee the performer calendar, a Kedamono cosplay, a hand sown Kedamono plushie, a Kedamono mask and a popee the performer phonecase.
