Simosuchus featured in Prehistoric Planet, but didn't get as much screentime as I think it would have deserved. So here's a deeper look into this incredibly interesting animal.

I'm surprised this animal is new to so many folks. In the herp community (people who keep reptiles and amphibians) this has long been a "dream pet" on the extinct species wishlist. A dwarf vegetarian crocodilian with a snub face and a smile. They'd be more numerous in Florida and in the pet trade than green iguanas! ;-)
@RaptorChatter
@RaptorChatter Год назад
Man the invasive species in Florida if we could use extinct animals in the pet trade would be insane

I'm kinda glad the cute lil buggers aren't here then tbh... Iguanas should not be pets. Or at least are for advanced keepers. It would be hella cool to see a free range simosuchus tho

Personally I'd love to have one of these lil' guys as a pet; all the cuteness of pugs & alligators combined in a single creature, but with none of the major downsides of either (ex: constantly struggling to breathe or eventually growing big enough to eat you one day).

Something I noticed about simosuchus is that both depictions with and without lips are absolutely adorable in their own way. The lipless depictions give it adorable buck teeth that make them look very silly, and the lipped depictions make its face look very round and polite. I love this animal so much

Prehistoric Planet is quite literally the only show that did Pterosaur species justice in all honesty. Also simosuchus is essentially a Prehistoric Pug crocodylimorph. lol

@@RaptorChatter The one gripe is that Hatzegopteryx got badly undersold in Season 1 (mostly because the entire nature of Hateg Island was completely glossed over), but even then, they made up for it in Season 2. So yeah, best pterosaur depictions in a documentary by a HUGE margin.
@catpoke9557
@catpoke9557 Год назад
@@Serpentking789 Maybe, though for all we know they may have had attitude issues. And with teeth like that, you wouldn't want to get on their bad side. They'd definitely be a more dangerous pet unless they were domesticated. I think keeping them would be similar to an iguana. A great pet if you're willing to take the risk and socialize it well to prevent ever being bitten. And if you do get bitten... definitely a hospital trip!

I love how well you explain everything so that you make us not only care about a long extinct species, but that you link it to our modern world so that we care about the land and people who live where it did now.

It was just so nice to finally see at least one crocodylomorph representin'. I think it had a fair amount of screentime, and displayed some interesting behavioural conjecture. It's large eyes are thought provoking and I was surprised to see it burrowing into actual burrows, that kinda didn't add up to me. I can imagine it protecting itself more like the modern monotreme echidna. As always, more research is required.
@RaptorChatter
@RaptorChatter Год назад
Yeah, there's so much new stuff coming out of the Maevareno formation that many researchers are focused on the new things instead of deeper studies on some of the already named specimens.

I write on Madagascar a lot for a living (I keep a few international companies aware on issues in Africa), and initiatives like these are so important. About 80% of people living in the country live off less than US$2.15 per day. Large sections of the population especially in the Western regions don't have access to clean water... Moreover, it is one of the country's most likely to be devastated by climate change. Endemic poverty, drought, and violent tropical storms have already placed 2.5 million people in the South and South East (out of about 30 million) at crisis levels of food insecurity. It's a country with amazing people and potential that just needs help and NGOs are the best avenues to go through.
@kyrab7914
@kyrab7914 Год назад
One of the things I didn't know about the region as well is that those distinctive trees and really all forestry is cut down and used a lot by the ppl bc they use charcoal and sell charcoal. And that's just another layer to things ppl don't know is that yes, they mostly use charcoal for power.
@RossDouglas82
@RossDouglas82 Год назад
@@kyrab7914 Yes, most people don't have access to electricity. Even those who do are constantly subject to prolonged power cuts and electricity rationing. I live in South Africa, a country with far milder and more fixable power, water, and poverty problems and electricity rationing. It's strange listening to people complain about the issues at home and spending hours a day describing an arguably worse reality, but it builds perspective. Not so much that there is always someone worse off, but on how crises and mismanagement compound things over time. And how small things that might seem innocuous can cause great change for good.

I can honestly see Simosuchus positively erupting in popularity after Prehistoric Planet 2. What's not to like? It's small, chubby, has a blunt face ( I might even go as far as saying it's 'cute') and is full of spice, facing off against a massive Theropod. Most modern crocs seem characterless in comparison. Perhaps, in becoming the dominant animal type on land, and pushing all the others aside into extinction, us mammals have robbed ourselves of some very interesting co-existing creatures!

idea: it lived symbiotically with some other animal that did all the burrow digging, while it used its large eyes to scour the surroundings for predators. Then they lived in the burrow together

@catpoke9557 Год назад
Most pugs do have breathing problems. As for humans, while our short faces don't cause breathing problems (mainly because our nose is long,) it actually does cause a lot of other problems like issues with draining snot from our nose. It's one reason why runny noses are so common for us.

I just want to get something off my chest. I am a "born again Christian" which would easily turn 80% of the people watching your videos to thinking I am a nut. LOL. But what I wanted to say is that I appreciate GOOD and HONEST science, even if it seems to conflict with my own beliefs. (fyi: there are two forms of revelation from God, Natural and Special, and they cannot conflict with one another, if they do, that means we - people - have something wrong about it) That being said I subscribe, watch and appreciate your channel because you are honest; when you cannot say for certain that something is or was about a prehistoric animal, you say as much. You don't throw out crazy concepts and theories, you speak to what evidence is available. Thank you.
