What the Pro's Wont Tell You About Learning to Jump on a Mountain Bike | How to Jump a Mountain Bike
One of the hardest things to learn on a mountain bike for me was learning to jump. Though, I knew how to bunnyhop for a few years before I learned to Jump, I did not understand how to utilize the bunnyhop in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. The pro's would say that learning to bunnyhop is essential for learning to jump, but still I could not figure out how the two worked together. In this video I'm going to be revealing the mystery behind how bunnyhopping works in conjunction with jumping a mountain bike. I will also teach you some very useful secrets that pretty much every video by a pro that I have seen fails to reveal.

I’m 57 coming from a BMX background with no experience on full suspension bikes. I have done the dead sailor, got bucked and cased while my friends would clear jumps with perfection. I began just focusing on suspension set up to give me the ability to pop up after compressing the front. I would hit jumps and make it safely and sometimes even boost a jump and getting consistent is still an art form. Those blind jumps are no problem and Now other people are watching me. My advice is to just focus on safely jumping to get the hang of it and practice boosting on table top jumps. Speed , angle of stance and level out will come with time. Crashes rarely happen even though I have had some close calls ( like riding 🎉he front tire out after sending a jump to fast) now my bike is called ,”little pop” and life is good

I'm nobody, but the biggest difference seems to be adapting to the lack of rear sus rebound and compression. Jumping a hardtail can be easier in some ways. I find it more intuitive to think about compressing just the front fork as opposed to weighting the bottom bracket (therefore both sus components) and transferring weight for micro-adjustment of rotation.

Can I add same as this comment, but with a little more. Standing UP. Not getting weight back, but standing up. I was trying to push through my feet the whole time, then pulling up some, with straight arms, WRONG. Push through feet and arms, to load up, then stand up at the top of lip. The bars will come back as you hit the lip, so you don't need to pull back, which I was doing. Arms should be straight, which will stop you going off to the side. ONCE OFF THE LIP, Then, gently push forward to meet the landing. I just need to get braver standing up now. Watched the slo mo here loads of times, and finally, the standing up bit clicked. Still not sending it but now know where I'm falling down. Thanks
@Petr388
@Petr388 4 года назад
@@derman3658 Well it really depends on the shape of the jump, but basically you should throw yourself a little bit back if you really want to get some height. But consider going back with your upper body only, not your butt. Especially on the steeper lips it will be happening naturally, because it prevents you from soaking the top of the lip which leads to potential OTB. In smaller lips or less steep you should lean back more by yourself and you will get the maximum potencial from the lip. I think when you start to jump more steeper lips, it teaches you by itself naturally to push your upperbody little bit backwards and afterwards you transfer this 'body knowledge' efortlessly to less steep lips.

please please please address the one thing that i notice when learning, to simply make sure that when you practice wheelies or anything that gets you front wheel off the ground,, That when you land trying to keep your front wheel straight,, That you are not pulling in favor of your dominant arm, and end up over the bars... when practicing that be aware of it,, I learned the hard way,, That is what i think the pro's take for granted its second nature to them,,,, keep up the good work...

I'm a year in and suffer from the same issue though less and less as I practice. He doesn't cover it in the video because you're not pulling up coming out of preload and its something he probably didn't experience. When you load the bike, you shouldn't have to pull up, its more like, as the bike is unloading you're also unweighting in a sense. Everything comes up together and you shift your weight to level the bike as he explains.

Been on mountain bikes for 30 years, always been a modest jumper, your tip on squashing front and rear is absolutely my missing piece! In other news WE MUST COLLABORATE! I am a licensed counselor, been in the business 20 years now and love this concept of combining mental health and biking. I always tell my clients that my bike is one of my therapists. I take some clients on rides or climbing as well to face their fears within in a powerful way. Let's find a way to connect, would love to chat. Great channel, great video, great concept.

Thanks for clarifying the fact that the difference between jumping and bunny hoping is that the jump lip does the backward motion front wheel lift for you. So many "how to" videos forget about this... The important aspect is to keep your body centered of slightly towards the front (and that's psychologically challenging) and let the bike come close to you so you can match the landing slope. If you're a skier, a roller bladder/skater even a horse rider, you know that you're only in control when leaning forward.

I really agree with what you said about the disconnect between the newer and more experienced riders. I rode BMX in the park most of my junior high and high school years so jumping and biking in general has been engrained in me for a long time 3 years ago I picked up my first proper mountain bike, I am completely obsessed with it! Last week i rented a bike for my girlfriend to come ride and experience mountain biking. I was trying to coach her but found it difficult to explain form and teqnique. there really is so much that you dont think about after riding for so long. It becomes muscle memory after a certain point. And is incredibly difficult to explain.

Pre loading is just squatting down in the bike though. I know your mentioning shocks and all but as a Bmx racer Mtb rider I had no shocks on my bike. I compress my body into the bike and push down and scoop my pedals making sure to lift from my shoulders and then trying to match the bike to the landing. But pros can’t explain jumping unless they’re a coach. And you sir are a coach

That really helped how you talked about compressing both the front and back end of the bike. I never learned how to properly bunny hop or get big air, so I'm practicing between rides. At 44 jumping seems scarier for sure, and falling is definitely a concern. You're right though, the fear is not enough to stop me from trying. 😅

Great video man! I feel the same when it comes to jumping, and I’m trying to improve. I’ve found that an easy way to start is following someone with more experience, it helps you judge your speed and build up confidence. As a coach I hear a lot of people say that they heard you should bunny hop to jump but they never seems to be able to explain or show it right. Your explanation makes much more sense, I never managed to fill in the L motion when jumping. So from now on I will just kick those who says that jumping are just a bunny hop.

Really helpful video, good advice. I can do reasonably big tables, but my technique and confidence fades when faced with gaps, I find them terrifying. My focus is speed, I race enduro but chicken out of small road gaps etc on stages, costs lots of time, so frustrating because I'm usually close to a podium. 52 years old but still trying to master jumping. 👍

I like this video/explanation. What makes them a pro is that it becomes a reflex or like walking. They do it without thinking. What i found helps is watching a few different people explain it. Because everyone will say it differently, and I might understand better, or pick up something. You can't watch me ride to say what the exact problem is. A problem i have maybe missed in 10 vids, but caught is some where else.

It did make sense. Thank you. Especially about Pushing down on the bars simultaneously with pushing down on the pedals with your legs/feet, but NOT pushing your but back "L" Shape, as you do for a bunny hop. Question though. You say to push out on the bars as you are in the air, but in the vid, you seem to push out and down. Is that to match the slope of the landing (landing on the back side of this particular jump)?
