Here’s why antidepressants often lead to weight gain and what you can do about it. As a psychiatrist and drug safety expert, Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring is going to break down the different types of antidepressants (SSRI, SNRI, mirtazapine, bupropion), how they affect your body, and why they cause weight gain. You’ll learn about factors like altered appetite regulation, metabolic changes, and hormone disruption, as well as the impact of antipsychotics like Seroquel and Abilify. Finally, Dr. Josef will share 5 strategies to manage and minimize weight gain, including medication adjustments, lifestyle changes, and surgical options for those who need it. Don’t settle for quick prescriptions-let’s explore safer, non-drug approaches to depression. Share your experiences with antidepressants and weight gain in the comments!

I was twice on Mirtazapine in the last 3 years. Each time for approx. 6 months. During those 3 years I gained 30 lbs and have hard time losing it. I'm 5.3 and was 118 lbs. Now I'm 148 lbs. When the specialist prescribed the medication for the first time she said the average weight gain is 5 lbs. The last time I took it was over a year ago.

Zismirt here in Ireland it’s called. I know he tried to help me sleep and be calm but my old doctor kept going with this and suggested this. He said it was a tiny dose at night as I had been the victim of a crime and tho I went on to not take it for this weight gain reason I often wonder would it have helped me as I also went on to have 2 mini strokes from the stress of it all I will always believe.. can I ask you did it do any good for you?? Also is 15mg every nite a very lo dose as this was promised to me as very lo dose??? Just looked at old packet(still untouched) and it says half a tablet at nite.. lo?? So 7.5 mg daily

It's taken all my will to reenter the PHYSICALLY ACTIVE world I was a part of my whole life. Citalopram annihilated any desire I had to surf ,bike etc or be a part of those communities. Fortunately I'm thin, but a 20 lb gain is huge for a 155lb man.

@@zak-a-roo264 my last ex was put on celexa and within a few months they completely deleted all social media and started isolating into their own inner world. They changed as a person and totally stopped caring about me and started treating me like an object. I broke up with them cuz of all of it. I do not care about them at all now nor do I have an desire to ever interact with them again. That said tho, I hope for the sake of all future people around them that they realize what the med pushed them to turn into. And another ex of mine from years prior was put on Prozac for basically just a month. Well the dude got super addicted to cigs, started dropping so much weight he was underweight, and become the most angry violent human I’ve ever been around personally. He would break my things and say he had to do it because I “pissed him off and he didn’t wanna actually hurt living creatures (tho he would literally hit my dog so that doesn’t even check out). Long story short: SSRIs (at least in people under 30) seem to usually cause more harm than good. (And I didn’t even explain the damage that Zoloft did to me personally lol). Edit: rereading your comment I realize you more meant physical things and not just isolating from all communities so my mistake for tangenting a little too hard. Oops)

I was recommended by my psychiatrist to take metformin to lose some weight. I declined because I did not want to add on another drug. Gaining 10-50 lbs is staggering. I don’t think many people realize it’s that much until they weigh themselves or their clothes don’t fit anymore. It’s really not good.

On mirtazapine for 2 years, gained 40 lbs (that I had just lost) it happened so fast. Only way I got it to stop was to keep my macros as low as I could and be healthy and workout, but I haven't lost any of it. I am tapering down now... was on 45 mg and now 7.5..I really hope once I get off of it completely the weight will come off.

I was at the same weight most of my adult life. I ate when i was hungry. Quit when i was full. Cymbalta caused my appetite to go thru the roof. I was always hungry. I just couldn't get full. I gained 30 pounds! After a very difficult 2 year taper, i am off the Cymbalta and my appetite has returned to normal. And i have lost over 20 pounds so far without even trying.

in rehab, they we called it stress eating. I went in for prescribed medication pain meds anxiety antidepressants... they made it a far worse mess. I quit the antidepressants halfway through but in benzo withdrawal I just wanted to rest all day. I asked over and over to talk to the psychiatrist again and it took two weeks and by the time I seen him he said he would have made the taper longer if I said it. I did say I needed a month long taper but the psychiatrist was more focused on putting me on a stimulate to get me more active. I gained about 60 pounds more than my usual weight. all there was to do was eat smoke and watch Netflix ( was during the peak of covid too, every other day someone was getting it in there.) I think they just wanted to make money and the Vyvanse they could charge my insurance.

Lara Briden (ND - e.g. certified naturopath, she also has a degree on Biology) I think says that magnesium helps for metabolic syndrome. (Though we know that for people in withdrawal magnesium can be destabilising, plus one has to find the right formula, e.g. glycinate can be great, but 1/5 people have adverse effects with it because of genetics, oxide messes with the stomach and is also not absorbed well, malate and citrate can be good choices, but no more than 100mg elemental in each capsule, tablet, because otherwise it has hidden oxide in it). I think she also addresses metabolic problems because of psychiatric drugs in her new book about Metabolism (I haven't read it yet, I intend to).

I have gained weight with almost every psych drug I've ever taken except for wellbutrin and a few others. While not used so much for depression, I think the drug that caused me the most rapid weight gain was risperdal but I didn't stay on it for long. The one that caused me to gain the most weight was lithium because I was on it for longer and it screwed up my metabolism.

Please also do a video on how often and through which mechanism antipsychotics and some antidepressants cause cycle irregularities for women and AFAB individuals. I lost my period while on just a a couple of months of olanzapine (this was about 15 years ago and my psychiatrist wouldn't believe me, until, after I insisted a lot, he looked it up and said 'Oh, okay, you are 1 in 2000.' . I looked it up now and it seems like 48% of women get that?? Same doctor decided I had a very 'idiosyncratic' organism for getting many side effects from psychiatric drugs.) and I seem to be at risk of losing it again if I exercise much, eat less or have more stress, while on perphenazine and amitriptyline. (It may happen anyway, I think, if I keep taking them, even without these cofactors). Thank you!!

I've been on nearly every antidepressant (or so it seems) for the past 10 years and I feel like my bipolar depression just keeps getting worse. I don't take care of myself in terms of diet and exercise due to the depression. I am about 100 pounds overweight right now. It fluctuates some. This is about my heaviest. I'm currently tapering off duloxetine. And I do see a psychologist.

So he thought I was too skinny the doctor and deliberately put me on an antidepressant that was actually going to put more weight on me than any other one when I spoke to him about the weight risk. Yes I was thin but I didn’t wanna put on weight. Not that I need a reason But I had fibromyalgia and had a neck injury and I didn’t want to be carrying around extra weight when I was all out of alignment with my spine. I can’t believe he gave me the worst possible one ..I never swallowed it ..I still have the pills

Well it could, but sleep is also important. And if you are sleeping well you aren't getting midnight snacks. And you have more energy during the day. A lower dose would be less likely to cause it in my layman's opinion. Watch what you eat, but you could be fine and not experience weight gain.
