It seems like every other week we see another video about a doctor who has made the decision to quit medicine. The problem with social media, however, is that it only gives you one side of the story. Here's what they don't tell you about leaving medicine.

Came across your channel and, as an ex-Plastic Surgery candidate, it's comforting to see you thriving and doing what you love! I just graduated med school after not matching this past cycle. I ultimately decided not to pursue residency, and it was by far the most difficult decision I've made, partially because the path to medicine is pre-planned. Also an incredibly isolating experience, since the schools/system give no support to those who decide to leave (and the virtue signaling is so real) It's hard to explain the feeling to anyone who hasn't worked in medicine, I don't think any doctor quits without having a real tough conversation with themselves!

not to be hating or anything but would any of the doctors leaving medicine think of leaving if they didn't have all these youtube channels and businesses around medical school? I'm just saying having these side hustles in the first place made the choice much easier.

100% and I’ve always maintained that. I think it’s suboptimal from a cost-benefit analysis (in most instances) to quit without something else planned. Whether your own business, another career, etc

I left medicine due to mental illness/burnout. Very few physicians go public about leaving due to factors beyond their control. I liked being a traditional rural family practitioner. Nothing in my life has been as challenging and rewarding.

I agree completely with your "risk-averse" comments. Medicine is a well-worn path and it often feels sac-religious to even discuss leaving. But sometimes, the risk of staying, especially if you're unhappy, far outweighs the risk of leaving. Also agree you must have a plan. Escape is not a plan!

Hey Kevin, I have a question for you. The following is an assumption of course, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. i'm assuming part of the reason you left residency when you did was because the business opportunities you had at the time might have not been available later, if you stuck through residency. If you were sure you'd be able to take on your entrepreneurial pursuits years down the line as xx an attending (around now), would you have done it? Or was it always an "either or" situation?

Hi Kevin I know you created Med-School Insiders to help people get into and succeed in medical school but, do you have anything teaching how to navigate and succeed on the business side of medicine? I'm discovering more and more that lack of knowledge on this is hurting many graduating med students who like me just assumed doctors automatically made lots of money. How do you start a practice? How do you hire and pay staff while budgeting supply cost? How do you pay staff until you get your first payment owed? How do you approach hospitals to refer you patients if they have their own in house surgeons? How do you grow your new practice while simultaneously paying yourself and, paying back your hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans?... The questions are endless yet, we aren't taught this in med school.

Great point. I'm not in a position to help people with private practices, but I am considering creating resources to help medical professionals who are interested in entrepreneurial pursuits outside a clinical practice.

I recently quit after 11 years. I was able to pay off all my loans and managed to save alot of money. Im spending my time with my family and restablishing a normal schedule. I started two businesses. One is for medical work that I will continue to do in an as needed basis and the other is an investment company. Im going to start a youtube channel to educate other doctors how to retire early. To me retirement is not the ability to stop working but it’s the ability to do whatever you want with your time. It’s freedom. Cheers everybody.

Most things in life are doable if you love it. Life is hard any path you take, medicine is just another path. It's worth it if you want it :) (It's possible to maintain a reasonable work-life balance depending on which field you choose, but there are periods where you just have to dip into sleep deprivation, no way around it. Again, worth it if you love it!

I don't judge people on what job they do. I gravitate to people on how kind they are. There could be a Doctor and a Bin Man in the same room and the Doctor may be incredibly rude and the Bin Man could be so kind and go out of his way to do something for me so i don't mind what job someone does, as long as we get on from the word "Go" that is my barometer for people.

Kevin, I like your views most of the time but I am not 100% with you here @11:28. Opting to drop out from Med-School is not illegal but definitely unethical unless someone faces personal medical reasons. - First up, if you happen to graduate from public school, government invests so much money and time in each future doctor. - Even if you pay lot of personal money to attend a private school, just remember that so many highly skilled doctors spare their time in training the future doctors. It is not like buying a million dollar car and trash it because you can afford to. - There is so much vetting process during med school admissions. One has to clearly express why they really want to be doctor while writing essays for secondaries and even during interview. Can't help it if those answers were made up just to get admission.

Keep in mind I’m speaking about the US system although I’m not sure how different the argument would be elsewhere. The key point is that there are many more medical school grads than residency seats. By leaving residency another grad fills your spot and there are no fewer physicians. The next question is can someone still leverage their MD to provide value to society if they attend medical school and don’t practice clinically. To which I would argue absolutely

I am confident I would have been able to pursue some entrepreneurial projects (whether the same or different) after completing residency. If I stuck with it I would graduate this June, and likely done a 1 year fellowship. The opportunity cost is tremendous and many people don’t understand this. I’m extremely fortunate to have made the decision I did, and each year that passes I feel luckier and luckier
