Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

A video on the history of the pipes would be awesome!! A few years ago several friends were camping up in the mountains of Washington state in the USA. As we sat around the campfire, there came a haunting sound through the forest. I looked across the fire at the only other person there with Scots ancestry, and without a word, we both stood up and walked down the road not believing what we knew we were hearing. About a half-mile down the road was a campsite with a lone piper playing. He was on a long holiday touring the states and had brought his pipes with him. We had been drawn by the sound of the pipes and sat listening to him for an hour or so before we walked back to camp. I doubt that I will ever forget the undeniable draw the sound of the pipes had when we heard them calling through the forest.

MacCrimmon's Lament is also a beautiful song - I have sung it many times. My father was a piper, and used to get angry when people talked about "the skirl of the pipes" - to pipers of my father's generation, a skirl was the name of the sound a piper made when his/her fingers didn't cover the holes on the chanter properly and so didn't get a pure note. So when people talked about the skirl of the pipes, to my father that meant they were saying that the piper was making lots of mistakes. Perhaps you could share that in your video about the history of the bagpipes!

Good point well made....
@Marcblur

Skirl is also when a bottom hand note like Low A or Low G makes a gurgling sound because the piper is blowing the reed too hard. Your dad was right though. It does show a lack of control of the instrument and "skirl" has always left me feeling the same.
@brianrowlands9751
@brianrowlands9751 2 года назад
Your father was absolutely right. Also, frying oatmeal and onions together makes a distinctive spluttering squeak - hence the name of the dish: "skirlie"
@akadacat
@akadacat 2 года назад
Yeah, my dad said on a couple of occasions that skirl referred to a mistake or tuning of the pipes, not the playing thereof. it wasn't until his funeral that I discovered that my Grandad 's name was Black, and my ancestry was Scottish.
@michaelgillespie1206
@michaelgillespie1206 Год назад
I did not know that skirling was a reference to mistakes, I thought that's what the proper sound was called, what I don't care for is when the high A has too much screech.

Waiting at the church for my Mum's funeral, the piper came from a distance, playing a lament. I lost it, of course. This was in Yorkshire, as it happens. The piper also played those smaller pipes - baguettes? Lovely sound. Dawn in Glencoe, the mist, and the pipes. Perhaps 400m away is about right.

Love this video. In 1996, I visited Dunvegan Castle, and Borreraig across the loch from the castle. At that time, as I traveled the one-lane road near Borreraig, I came to find the biggest surprise of my weeklong trip in Scotland: The Scottish Heritage Pipe Museum. At least, that's the name I best remember. Sadly, I believe it's no longer open. It was an amazing place where the history of the Pipes and Piobaireachd were told. I came back with a ton of piper CDs. I love the pipes, so I do hope you produce a video all about their history. Thank you for this video about "MacCrimmon's Lament".

Hi Bruce, I fled Scotland a wee while back because I felt lost. Now I've come to think that a man without a past has no future. As you probably know we are not taught what you teach as young Scots. Infact we not even taught our own language, which angers me. I've came to realise that this is by design, for which I must put a side as this has happened across the world to many people's. Watching your videos makes me feel proud to be Scottish again, learning more about my country's past and for that, I give you thanks. You inspire me to return to Scotland, too try to do the same with young Scott's. Thank you brother for your passion for our country! Alba gu bra

It was so cool to hear about Lady Mackintosh, as a MacGillivray it's part of our clan history that when she raised the fighting force, she had asked the Chief Alexander MacGillivray to lead the rest of the men into battle. Alexander MacGillivrays body was buried with his broadsword in hand, as it was so swollen he couldn't be parted from it. Mackintosh was the head of the Clan Chattan Confederacy, which MacGillivrays were a part of.

Many years ago, some local Scottish Americans - and a few native-born Scots - came to one of our powwows, wearing their regalia and carrying their pipes and drums, their presence to honor us as the Indigenous People and Elder Brothers in this land. To their surprise, when they played many of our people danced. It was surprising to all how well Native traditional dances went with the reels. And when our Scots brethren played the Pipers Lament to honor fallen veterans and Natives who had passed on due to wars and genocide, we stood still and held our hands or eagle feather fans in salute. It was a beautiful experience for everyone.

I'd be very interested to know the true history of the bagpipes. Bagpipes as a whole, that is, not just their most famous incarnation: the Great Highland Bagpipes. AIUI, it wasn't a fiddle that Nero played while Rome burned; it was a tibi utricularis -- an early bagpipe. Even earlier, I suspect that bagpipes existed in Babylonian times. But where did the idea originate? How did the pipes propagate across almost all of Eurasia? That said, I'd be surprised if any society embraced the pipes more than the Scots. This sounds like a really interesting project -- good luck, Bruce; I can't wait!
