DMs take note: Paladins don't just simply fall. It has to be something heinous. Something that could lead to them becoming a Death Knight. Not for just being an asshole.

Lord Soth actually murdered his wife to marry an eleven maiden he rescued, and then failed to stop the Cataclysm due to his own insecurity. As he and his wife died in fire, she cursed him to undeath. Read the dragonlance books, specifically the Twins Trilogy which contains Soth's account

So weird how most of the new elements in my campaign appear about 2 weeks after Mr. Rhexx makes a video about how cool they are.....

I'm Dming CoS to a group of friends. When we started the group wasn't complet, they all took either support or glass cannons classes, and knowing their tendencies i knew that they wouldn't be able to pass lvl 3... So i added a DMPC, i know, i know, but it was as a tank, he don't really do much outside combat, rarely speak out and never takes decisions for the group, It was a Tiefling Paladin. After a while we got joined by another guy who rolled a Goliath Fighter, so i though, "well no more need for this DMPC, lets get rid of it", but i though to myself that it would be a shame to just, make him dissapear in the mists... The party as grow to like the character since through him i do jokes and commentaries, and then i got the idea... They are close to go for the Amber Temple..., i will be runing the Ambre temple using CoS : Reloaded, cause the vanilla Amber temple is Meh... Knowing 2 of the party members, they will not pass up the chance to make a deal with one of the Vestiges, and i Know one of them is gonna mess something up... So it'll trigger a fight with the Lich/or a defense mecanisme that makes the whole side of the mountain collapse or something. And get my DMPC trapped/killed, while he covers for their escape, in an heroic sacrifice... And when the moment is right, he'll come back as a Death Knight and face them..., oh that will be funny to see their faces...

MrRhexx: Why does a Death Knight's blade deal additional necrotic damage? Me: It's because they undivine smite, right? MrRhexx: It's because the paladin's soul resides in that sword. Me: So they just stack the divine smite on top of that necrotic damage, then? *Takes notes for my table's upcoming Deathknight fight*

Now I'm imagining playing a Death Knight PC, one of the fallen Paladins trying to undergo a life of redemption. Lots of good roleplaying opportunities there. I think I'm gonna prepare that character right now, just in case a DM ever lets me do that

I believe a death knight's song is sung by banshees. These banshees used to be the people who committed evil acts that helped bring about the knight's fall from grace.

I grew up on Dragonlance, specifically Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's books, which involve Lord Soth. They're absolutely worth looking into for inspiration for a Death Knight.

I listen to these videos all the time. Usually when I’m exercising. Your work is very appreciated. Definitely my favorite dnd lore channel. I started playing a little over 30 years ago when I was still in elementary. We had the core books in the library so when you pull lore from the ancient editions, I scream like a little girl inside. The Deathknights of Crail? And their grandmaster, Dreadlord Proletius?

What about Gargoyles, Oni, or Minotaurs those have a lot of juicy lore going back, or even a race that has yet to get the 5e treatment where you could give a reason for why it should, The Darfellan, a literal race of Orca “Killer Whale” people.

Curious about the honor still being intact on a death knight, specifically the part about never ambushing or attacking a enemy that has yet to ready there weapon. What if you never ready your weapon, will they never attack you? If you do not attack it can you just walk around it?

Death Knights are some of my favorite monsters, and this video makes me like them even more. I want to run a game with one as the main antagonist now. BTW I'm loving the increased frequency of videos, but don't overwork yourself. As for suggestions for monsters, how about Yugoloths, Allips, or Astral Dreadnought? Or some of the planes that aren't really mentioned in detail in 5e, such as Pandemonium, Gehenna, or Elysium.

Great video. I like the idea of a Death Knight PC that actually seeks its own redemption. They have to do something heinous and horrible to fall, but as we all know the redemption arc trope is alive and well and good storytelling. A Zealot Barbarian that was literally too angry to die would be a good one. Or a once Lawful Stupid Paladin of justice who had a backwards view of justice.

You are so entertaining to watch and learn from. Your ability to describe stories are proof that you can be a great DM

I remember when I used to DM and one of my players said they would like to DM for a bit because it looks easy. I said sure, then I made myself a Death Knight character and convinced him that it just an evil paladin. He never looked into and I taught him a valuable lesson.

Thanks for always putting up well done and though out videos. They are really helping me out lore wise for the campaigns i am running for my players and continue to be a source of ideas they can appreciate. Looking forward for upcoming videos.

In 3.5 they were templates that you add to a creature (assumes humanoid but never explicitly stated if I remember right). They also gave the only way, as far as i have been able to find, to gain undead turning immunity. The biggest gameplay weakness for undead was not a factor for the deathknight.

All of your lore video are fantastic. But I haven't been this blown away since the asmodeus video. Really incredible work. Your videos are watched and shared whenever they come out, thank you for the busy month! Maybe one on the arch-devils and their respective levels? a while ago I unsubscribed because I never clicked on any of your notifications, I think it was around the time you were doing the space stuff, this video made death knights my favourite creatures in dnd no question, so you earned me back :) good video!

The most powerful and sad story of Death Knight was Lord Soth. It was beautiful and tragic. He wasn't just regular death knight though. He was death knight that was able to command other death knights. And the truly sad part is Lord Soth wishes to redeem himself and not be a death knight, but it is futile hope as he is forever cursed to relive his fall every night and be told his story by banshees. :)

A death knight in our campaign actually became what he is as a way to atone for an oathbreak, and is like a completely chill guy, even going so far as to assist my PC in removing the curse that threatens to purge her mind with info and puzzle assistance.

In so gad I clicked this video. I'm currently working on a campaign, and this video really helped tie together the main villain, giving him a proper end goal and humanising him much more.

Hey man, let me start by saying this channel is great and I love watching your stuff. So much so that I'm pleading with you; don't burn yourself out doing this. Your videos are worth waiting for. If you can, please, take your time, enjoy what you're doing, and keep doing it as long as you can even if you make fewer videos. As for monster videos I'd love to hear more about my favorite monster, myconids. But really? I'd love to hear about ways to achieve immortality that are well outlined in D&D materials. I love the idea of playing characters whose goal is to achieve immortality by good and/or evil means.

Last moment about their song seems like the strongest bit of lore.
