Probiotic bacteria are widely defined as live microorganisms that, when consumed in sufficient amounts, confer a health benefit on the consumer. The widespread usage of probiotic supplements has preceded the scientific evidence of their efficacy, however. Many probiotic supplements contain insufficient numbers of bacteria to elicit a beneficial response and many are not stored properly to maintain the viability of the bacteria they supposedly contain. In this clip, Drs. Jed Fahey and Rhonda Patrick discuss concerns about the safety and efficacy of probiotic supplements.
In this short clip, Dr. Rhonda Patrick and Dr. Jed Fahey discuss various factors and some of the research showing the effects of probiotics.
Note: The specific probiotic formulations, the clinical research of which is discussed in this clip, has since been re-released under a different brand name. This formulation is now available under the brands "Vivomixx" (in Europe) and "Visbiome" (in the U.S.).

One point of clarification. Dr Patrick references "VSL#3" studies but probably isn't aware that the current product sold under the name VSL#3 is not the same product as was referenced in the studies shown on the screen. The product that was sold and studied under the name "VSL#3" from the early 2000s to 2016 was the result of a partnership between the product inventor (an Italian Professor) and a private company. When the partnership dissolved the company owned the trademark name VSL#3 and the product itself was owned by the inventor. Without access to the brand name, the Inventor partnered with a new company and began selling the formulation under the name Visbiome (Viviomixxx in Europe). The company that owned the trademark VSL#3 then began selling a new formulation under that old trademark without explaining to doctors and physicians that the product was in fact different. They lost a $15 million false advertising suit as a result and a class action case is ongoing. If you go to the VSL3 package insert today you wont see those historic studies referenced because the company is the subject of a permanent federal injunction which prevents them from stating or suggesting a false continuity between the new formulation VSL#3 and the original formulation. The Visbiome product insert conversely does cite those historic studies because it contains the original formulation. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0736/3645/files/Visbiome_Cap_Unf_EX_Package_Insert_02_2022.pdf?v=1644249516

@Matthew blackwelder ... I believed the product in question is VSL#3 and a wee bit expensive ($132.92 + $4.43 s/h); it can be purchased via Amazon.

Is vivomixx just another imitation (like vsl#3) of visbiome?

aren't powder probiotics less likely to reach your gut compared to quality capsules?

Has anyone come out with a myrosinase probiotic yet? I can't eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables and wanted to see if it would help.
