I had a failed litter with my first time mom. She only had two babies and both of them died. In this video I discuss what steps to take next and how to troubleshoot the failed litter and determine what needs to be done.

Many more things might be responsible for fewer kits in a litter. You may have bred her when she's less fertile. You may have to repeat the breeding same evening or next money depending on when you did the first. Sometimes you leave the doe in the buck cage overnight after witnessing two different fall offs (if you your buck Is a nice boy). I once had a Halequine/New Zealand mix, who does a kit twice, and didn't even catch on the third breeding. I treated her with some LA an multivitmin then renewed her and she did 9 kits. So sometimes, we need not give up after the second breeding of repeated lower litters. I believe in finding out for myself not just following textbook experiences. Thanks for sharing. I love you man!

Thanks for your suggestions. And for watching my videos. There are certainly other reasons that you could end up with low litter counts or failed litters.

Very accurate advice, nice vid. I like the mix of breeds too. All rabbits are individuals, some does are fine with a buck to come 'a callin to their cage.

I have noticed that twice now I have had does that have only had two or three per litter. I traced back through my records and both times I had put the doe with a buck that had bred already that day. I am thinking that the buck was already spent, so to speak. I will be giving my does a fresh buck from now on.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
That could be the case. I don't generally find that the buck is the issue and this buck wasn't already bred that day so not a problem with him. Still worth trying though.

Sorry, I had forgotten to also mention that in both cases my does were already proven and have previously given me decent sized litters. One of the gals has since given me another litter of 7. It could be coincidence but I'm not taking chances anymore. Thanks for the reply and keep the videos coming.

My doe only had two on her first litter as well. One died after 3 days (it looked well fed). Her other died after a week. Again it was well fed. Not sure why it died. Looks like it sunk too deep in the box and maybe she smushed it maybe? We are devastated because her litter came from our harlequin buck and he was taken by something just a couple days after that litter was born. Even worse that was my only buck. My other buck was killed by something as well. Should I get new does and bucks? My current does are sisters and 1 year old. If I wait to grow out a new buck, I think they might be too old. My other doe had an unsuccessful and small first litter as well but her second was 8 and 7 lived.

Bucks can go sterile for a few weeks after a very hot period. If you've had a warm Autumn, this could be the case. I would rebreed the doe again immediately. They tend to be most fertile the first day or two after kindling. Hope this helps.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
Bucks can go sterile but that is not the issue here. It hasn't been anywhere near as hot as that. Rebreeding immediately is a good idea but there is no reason to think that a doe will not be just as fertile later on as she is right after kindling. Good suggestions though.

Have you ever experienced the buck being aggressive when you try to take the doe out of his cage? When I tried to take the doe out after he had successful fall offs he started growling and getting agressive. Is this normal in first time bucks?

So if you're cross breading, then you don't interbreed the second generation since mutts don't do as well? So why not just stick with one breed?

You could definitely do that. I don't have a problem getting rabbits around here so I don't worry about raising my own breeders. And I do find that mixed breeds first generation tend to be healthier and grow faster.

Some times it takes a new mom 5 times to learn how to figer out how to rase her litter . Specially if she is a young mom. Also a young mom will have a small litter.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
Not always. Young moms typically produce about the same number of kits that they do when they are older. There are times with the first litter may be small for sure but it isn't a rule or even the norm. Also, young moms do often have trouble with first litters but if it takes them 5 times to get it right that is very poor mothering instincts (poor genetics) and I wouldn't use her babies as future breeders. Most of my rabbits do just fine from the first litter on. Sometimes it takes 2 times to get it right but never 5. Keep in mind that I am raising meet rabbits though not pet rabbits or speciality breeds.

If my litter doesn’t look fed at the 24 hour mark I step in and supplement feed as well as watch my doe nurse. No reason for failed litters sometimes it’s day 3 before some does get their milk in and by then the litter is weak and might be to weak to nurse.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 года назад
That works. But in my opinion, if a doe doesn't get her milk until day 3, she isn't a good candidate for breeding. If it is an ongoing issue, I would replace the doe. That is just how I do it though.
@justforfun4623
@justforfun4623 3 года назад
Some people actually want stock with good genetics, i mea if you wanna keep messing with shitty stock then by all means go for it. But in my experience most does have them kits stuffed full in less than 24 hours, anything that can not feed the kits in 24 hours is a cull unless of course its a first time litter then i give the doe a second chance but if she has less than 8 or does not care for them she becomes a great crock pot dish

I have a Californian doe and a New Zealand buck. The doe has been aggressive with the buck and when i put the doe to the buck's cage, he harldly seems interest in her. Should i get new rabbits, |'ve had them for almost a year and a litter of seven which fell throght the cage my bad. and a second litter that were born way to early.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 лет назад
I would look at replacing the doe personally. I don't like to deal with aggressive rabbits myself. Also might want to make sure the male isn't overweight. That is often the case with a male that is not interested in breeding.
@AsriaDurden5558

We have red new zealands. The breeding pair we got are older (doe 2 1/2 yrs buck 2 3/4 yrs old). I wanted a few litters for more females and to eat the males then get a young non related male to breed the young does to. So far the pair are having 5-7 kits which i didnt think isnt bad. All are healthy and she is a good mom. Do you think 5-7 is good litters for the age/breed?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
That isn't bad at all. I generally like to get about 6 to 10 out of mine but for older rabbits that is a pretty good litter size and still big enough to make it worth it. Plus, less work on processing day. 10 is a lot to do in one day but 5 to 7 isn't as bad.
@reneebrown5598

When can you rebreed after a failed litter. Should you wait till the failed litter should have weened? Or can you quickly rebreed? The reason I ask is that if it happens to me I'm thinking on getting that doe on the same breeding cycle as another doe so if litter size is tiny again I can have a surrogate mom and get rid of that doe.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
a failed litter and a small litter are two different things. if it is a failed litter (no babies alive) then you can rebreed after about a week. if it is a small litter I would wait until the babies are at least 3 weeks old before rebreeding. That gives her enough time to get the current babies weaned before the new babies arrive. I hope that helps.
@akabga
@akabga 5 лет назад
If you have a total loss, breed her immediately. I know it sounds like a lot on her, but it's actually better and more healthy. Her hormones are telling her body to store fat for milk. Now that she doesn't have those babies to nurse, she'll gain weight rapidly which will ruin her. She'll have smaller, unhealthy and more failed litters in the future.

My doe had 6 babies and they died after 3 days. What could have caused this? The babies were kind of scared out all though they were all bundled in the nest the day before. Also not sure if this is her first liter.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
I am so sorry to hear that. Multiple things could have happened. It could be something as simple as the mother not taking care of them. Although that is rare it does happen from time to time. It could be that they got out of the nest and froze but doesn't sound like that either. Unfortunately, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. I would try again and see if she does better on the next litter.

There would be no problem with doing so. I only have one spare cage though and I like to have an empty cage to use as a grow out pen. Plus I just don't need that much rabbit so spacing the litters out works better for me. Keeps me from having to keep as much feed on hand at one time, less work, etc.

Hi Chris, Billy at Far-Mar Acres. A couple of my mature does were well in their heat cycle. Their kind of well Stuck Up, you know the kind. I call them my DIVA DOES. LOL. I placed them with a young buck (6 months) and neither one of them would lift for him. So I put them in with another young buck same issue. Took them to a friend who has one of my older bucks ( 18 months old) His name is "BUCK NASTY" BAM. 3 fall offs in less than 2 minutes. I came to the conclusion that these girls prefer older bucks. Do you think that really is a factor when breeding rabbits?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 года назад
I suppose it could be. On another note, a technique many breeders use to get does to lift is to take the doe on a trip around the block a few times and then put her back in the cage with the male. It may just be that the act of traveling with them made them more receptive rather than what buck they were with. Not sure honestly.

Can being overweight be the cause of a doe to have a small litter.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
yes. Being overweight can cause all kinds of issues with breeding. But genetics also plays a big role in the litter size. If she is overweight put her on a diet (not when she has kits nursing though) and re breed her to see if you get a bigger litter. If not, I would look to replace her with a new rabbit.

Your attitude and lack of compassion towards your rabbits shows that you failed to learn compassion as a young child. Keeping rabbits in small wire cages causes sore hocks and does not provide room for them to jump and run, or take care of their emotional needs. And, yes, animals need mental stimulation, just as you do!

My rabbits show no signs of stress (mental or physical). They are very content to live in "small" cages and have their every need attended to. I have never had a case of sore hocks either. It is obvious that we disagree on many things so it may be best if you follow someone else's channel on how to raise rabbits. There are plenty of people out there that would agree with you.
