Remote work in USA has taught managers that most jobs in tech and business analysis can be outsourced to India. It is quite common now for the H1B jobs to be replaced by an IT job in Hyderabad, Bangalore or Chennai. One should realize that American companies are very much into cost cutting and profit maximization and are very good in shareholder driven business. H1B should have a plan B in all cased of returning to India.

@@sr-xd8jb not true. Silicon Valley routinely pays 300 to 500 k per year which is way higher than what people get in India. Starting salaries in india are way lower. Only VP and CTO level people and CEO make great money. Also note the huge trend among the medium and smaller companies in USA in terms of outsourcing. Finally this is increasing beyond Bangalore and many smaller towns in the north and east have now started seeing outsourcing
@Drganguli
@Drganguli 5 месяцев назад
@@sr-xd8jb From an American company perspective there is a lot of room left in cost arbitrage given they care about the actual dollar rupee rate. Huge savings result from outsourcing even now. 20 years ago the dollar was 40 rupees. Of course the salaries of it people in India has improved a lot which is great.

A lot of these companies who are not willing to sponsor a visa don't even consider the notion of a 3-year stay on OPT and STEM extension. It's funny that 3 years is still longer than their mean employee attrition rate, but they still cry because no sponsorship means we can't be a "long-term employee". Big problem.

If any youngster is trying to decide, here are my two cents: Don't go abroad if you have to take even a dollar of debt. It's just not worth the risk. Just accept you cannot afford it. If you get funding or pay out of pocket, then sure, go for it even in this economy (I will not recommend your parents selling your only house or having zero cash in hand to fund you). As for non-Stem subjects, I will say that non-stem students should try to go abroad even more as in India you can learn science subjects well but social science and humanities are only taught at a good standard in the West. Good luck.

My parents came to America in 1970 when I was a little boy. I don’t remember it, but my mother told me we all got our Green Cards right there at the airport upon arrival. Now, from what I’ve told, an Indian citizen coming to America today has to wait nearly 100 years to get his Green Card. Why do I mention this? Well, if my parents had stayed in India, then I would have been raised in India and I wouldn’t even consider moving to a foreign country. I honestly feel my life in India would have, in some ways, actually been better had we not moved to America. My advice to Indians: Opportunities in India are getting better, and if you have a good job in India, then stay in India. America isn’t worth because they’ve made it too difficult. I will move back to India after retirement.

Some advice from an American. The USA needs to fill a lot of trade (blue collar) jobs. Indian students should widen the net of job positions they apply for. Try applying for trade jobs such as plumbing, carpentry, and welding. Get job training in India in a trade before coming to the US to study for a degree in technology.

A very basic Question. Why are people so desperate for H1B Visa or wanting to stay in US, no matter what it takes. Is it just because of some more dollars or some kinda status symbol? I lived in US on L1B Visa sometime back. After spending 5 years there, I prefered to relocate myself & family back to India with whatever I could manage to save. Initially, it was difficult thing to manage, especially for kids. But, after few months, I was alright and now, I don't regret my decision. Even after 10 years of relocating to India, my both kids haven't given up their American accent and whatever the good discipline they learnt in US. I travel abroad as tourist atleast twice or thrice a year. No regrets at all.

My comment is only about finding faculty positions after a ph. D. in USA. On plus side, a university H1B does not go through the H1B lottery system, and is granted if application meets all USCIS requirements. But, to get faculty position in even in a B grade US university is very hard. You have to have top notch writing skills, in addition to being a top notch STEM researcher. There are many STEM Indians, who are good writers, but most fall short in this area, because honing great writing skills, takes at least a decade of concerted effort and practice. To, my shock, I knew a UCLA ph. D. American in Mathematics, whose writing skill is truly amazing. Even, he could land a teaching job in a community college only. I know also of a M. S. in Mathematics from India, a green card holder, who was rejected for teaching job even in a community college, because of poor writing skills. Yes, this may come as a shock, but writing skills are a factor, even when being hired as a Mathematics teacher.

Good points. In the USA, J.P Morgan Chase has stopped H-1B sponsorship, but Amazon still offers sponsorship. There are so many qualified people looking for employment in the USA now that companies won't move an employee outside the USA just to retain them. If you can't demonstrate your value to the company, you are replaceable.

Indians leave for US because the dollor rate is high. If the dollor rate is down Indians would not prefer US. In US unless both the couple work can't lead a comfortable family life. In India if both couple are working can save , one side salary. These days companies are paying good salaries in India. In India cost of living is very low compared to US. It is better to come back to India , it is good in short and long term. As a bachelor how much you can save in US in Indian currency, that much can be saved in India.
