Oh! Time slows down! I was in a car crash 15 years ago. I clearly remember looking, out the passenger window, at the driver before he hit me, the realisation that I had killed myself and my passenger, and I was more sorry for that than myself. Then I accepted it. It was weirdly peaceful. I knew it wasn't survivable. My brain checked out then. I made peace with my life and everything I had done and hadn't done. All of that in what was probably no more than 3 seconds. I still remember every moment of it with perfect clarity.

Is there any reason why this happens? I’ve been in a wreck too and it’s very weird how when we experience things like that time seems to slow to a crawl
@levity1047
@levity1047 3 года назад
@@MnemonicHeadTrip I think what happens is that because your brain become on such a high alert at that point it stores every bit of that information and when you are recalling it in the future you’re recalling a very detailed scenario. In return this is also what makes it seem like it lasted a lot longer than it did. This is just a guess though
@vrb340
@vrb340 3 года назад
@@MnemonicHeadTrip this happens because at that moment, one is at the peak of his/her consciousness and the concept of "time" ceases to exist, where thought ceases to be. There is only "the" moment. It is and will always be is. In there, there exists no time, no thought but only pure consciousness and what is and your mind absorbs everything there is. This usually is experienced by people who witness Great, Great beauty or in a life-threatening situation, monks and also to people on a psychadelic trip because it activates the "no-thought" areas of the brain. Just imagine, that you are free of thought and you see the world as it is, the beauty of it, vibrant and heavenly.

Just remember that the pursuit for meaning is a personal journey. It doesn't come with an instruction manual and anyone who says otherwise shouldn't be taken seriously. One thing that helps me when I'm feeling down is to remember that the reason I'm able to perceive my sadness is contingent on the previous happiness I've experienced. What makes life so fucking beautiful is that contrast of emotion. It's a reminder that your emotional wellbeing is not static, but on a crazy rollercoaster throughout life and that you have a whole host of cognitive biases that work against your recognition of that fact when you are in a depressive state. Actively train yourself to recognize that not only intellectually but also emotionally (which is always harder).

This is a paradigm I have personally lived. About eight years ago, I went out for a walk in the early evening. I found myself suddenly jumped by two muggers. I was very depressed and life felt meaningless at that time. They beat me viciously, and aimed a gun at my face. Only in that moment, of staring down the barrel of that deadly weapon, did I realize that I had any desire to live, because in that moment, it occurred to me, all through my life, I had never truly lived. I lived in fear, and for others, never allowing my self to take any chances or seek any opportunities. As I looked down the barrel of that weapon, I pleaded with them not to kill me, even knowing they were gangsters with a reputation for killing their marks. Amazingly, although they beat me even more, they did not shoot me. I've had my share of traumatic memories since then. But that moment, it changed me irrevocably. Since that time, I have reconsidered everything. I have allowed the ego of the old man to die, and in place of that, have discovered a true self I never knew I had. I have written an autobiography since then, which I hope to publish soon. I have created a gaming system, and am writing fiction books. I can't say for sure if I will be materially successful, but I value that experience, because it revealed in me my true spirit, that of an artist. Without my brush with the possibility of death, I could have never learned to live. Thank you for sharing this. Namaste.

When we look at the world around us, at the people around us, at ourselves and contemplate over our experiences in life, it's hard not to see any meaning in life, some grand purpose. We ask why we exist, why are we alive, why we survived and what we're meant to do and it's almost saddening to come to the realization that ultimately, it doesn't matter. We're here and that's all there is to it and it's up to us to make something of this experience we call life...

Suddenly he realized what even the most simple of things meant to him and that he would never experience it again. This will happen to all of us, and when we die we wont know we are dead, we wont know that we ever lived or existed. All we have is the here and now. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone so this very moment is all we have. If this all seems depressing just remember that after you die you cease to exit and therefore wont be depressed anymore because you no longer exist. Just like before you were born.

If yall like this story, give the book of Ecclesiastes a quick read. It addresses the same nihilism, with the same reassurance that what matters is the arbitrary meaning you give your life while you're still actually alive. Great piece by Pursuit of Wonder as always. Thanks for putting this together.
@Arkylie
@Arkylie 2 года назад
Ecclesiastes, written by Solomon, is a summation of all mankind can hope for in the absence of faith in God. It's interesting that it sits there, to contrast the faith of the books around it, the faith in the face of all the evil of mankind and horror of natural disasters and the inevitability of death... the faith that God still has a greater plan in which all these details will eventually turn out to be more meaningful than what they seem, and less consequential than we tend to consider them to be. It's one of those "if *I* were designing this compilation, I wouldn't include that piece" -- and yet, there it sits. The wisdom of a man described as the wisest who ever lived, written during a time of his life when he had fallen into despair of ever finding joy or meaning again.

Imagine going through an experience like this and then all you get out of it is that "Things dont need grand reasons or explanations beyond themselves " and "these questions get you nowhere with nothing". Wow... If an experience like this didn't open your eyes then nothing will...you are truly lost.

You'd think if one was right about God, that God would have the power to reach this person. But does He?
@Arkylie
@Arkylie 2 года назад
@@Woodscraps-lr5vz Well, the Bible seems to indicate that Volition is a big deal. "He is not willing that any should perish" and yet people do perish (in terms of the afterlife, not mortal existence). Yet the text depicts a God who is powerful, wise, sovereign, and who cares deeply for the humans he created (to the point of coming down in person to live a human life and then suffer and die to provide a way of salvation). If God were the one making choices about who perished and who didn't, "He is not willing that any should perish" would be a base lie. So the only coherent detail would be something outside God, something He cannot -- or has chosen not to -- affect. And the free will of each human seems to be that inviolate thing. God letting humans decide against him, despite the painful consequences. "O Jerusalem, how many times would I have gathered you under my wings, as a mother hen gathers her chicks, but you would not come to me!" That's the cry of a person who offers help but does not force it. Much like a parent who sees her child grow into a teenager and descend into a life that does nothing but harm them; the answer is not to lock the teen up in a room until they make the right choice, but to hope that they can realize the problem and, eventually, make better decisions. Always providing an open door, a number to call if in distress, and just keeping the phone by your bed and hoping that it rings before it's too late.

But a gust of wind caught me as I hit the ground, it lifted me slightly. Just enough to sit me on the ground like I'd been standing there all day. This is so deep and I can relate with my entire life (even the parachute event, somehow). However, I continue struggling with it. Our parents should have been more realistics when raised us, but I know they didn't know what they were doing. We shouldn't seek for abstract meaning everywhere... this is not natural, and this is why we suffer. Everything is material, crude and brutal sometimes. There is no meaning, no clear goal, things won't get better just because we want it or believe it. THIS IS THE ULTIMATE TRUTH, and I'm OK with it most of the time... ...but my brain was trained and conditioned to seek meaning and unfortunately it stills doing it in some hidden stance. It's like a fucking disease or disorder, and makes me sad sometimes. But I won't give up. I can overcome it.

The thing is that even if someone has that realization during the incident, he could still continue having these existential crises and questions 'eating' his brain after. It would be possible that the realization would be for nothing; a temporary realization for nothing.
@MnemonicHeadTrip
@MnemonicHeadTrip 3 года назад
Yes, I think that’s definitely true. Even after he realized those things, I feel like theres the potential for the looming meaningless to remain. After all, it could just be a product of your brain not wanting to die. You’re being confronted with death, of course you’ll want to live. But even if you did you’ll still die the same. I think the point is that his perspective towards it and the mundaneness of reality shifted to a more positive and grounded one. Realizations like these tend to be temporary for me. I think it would be the same for most people. But to be fair, there’s a point to be made that they shouldn’t be permanent. That’s not what life is. Life is well, how it might be right now for you. We get sucked into all of our responsibilities or emotions and lose sight of realizations like these. I suppose all we can do is just keep going
@ZoiusGM
@ZoiusGM 3 года назад
@@MnemonicHeadTrip Yes, it is a natural reaction when someone faces the possibility of death but when the deadly situation and the danger is gone, there is no need for the person to 'want to live' and despite the 'realizations' he continues being and thinking how he was before the incident. Makes sense to me. Why do people think of everyday life and moments as mundane? Just a question I had and your text reminded me of.
