We visited from 2 to 7 May 2024. Definitely do not recommend renting a car if you are planning to as traffic and finding parking are equally bad. Only rent a scooter if you are comfortable to ride like the locals, squeezing beside cars and going up pavements (optional). Otherwise, Grab and Gojek apps should work fine for getting around.
We opted not to visit Uluwatu temple partly because of the monkeys. I've been there before many years back and my dad had to pay the trainer(?) some money to bribe the monkey with food in exchange for his glasses with the nose pad bitten off.
Definitely recommend taking a beginner surfing class if you haven't tried before, you don't need to know how to swim as a beginner as the instructor only brings you out to chest deep water and helps you along.
In terms of accomodation, we stayed nearer to the East (Home 88 on google maps). This area is less touristy and you would be able to dine and shop where locals do. If you want easier access to attractions and popular beaches, stay near any of the Western beaches instead (surfing is done mostly there it seems).
