I train luring as a behavior, similar to targeting. For me it is extremely important to prevent frustration and over-arousal during the training process. If you lure your puppy for too long or hold the lure too close to the puppy where he thinks your actually giving him the treat... It can cause frustration and if your puppy is constantly frustrated/over-excited, it can lead to the dog being frustrated or over excited when performing the behaviors you train in this way. That is why I think it is extremely important to train luring as a behavior- beginning by first having the puppy or new adult dog follow the lure from a distance with the correct level of arousal. Make sure your dog has a closed mouth and is not acting frantically. You can experiment holding the lure higher up and from a few feet away. As your dog starts to understand the concept he is being reinforced for following, you can then add more advanced concepts to luring. Many of us think that a dog who is walking behind a treat, is learning nothing besides following a treat. To understand the importance of this behavior is - in my opinion - advanced stuff. We appreciate this tutorial very much and wish more of us did.

Nice and easy reminder to go slow and follow without frustration. It is a good tip for dogs too that are too speedy. Blessings.

I dont say it, but I show it- it helps puppies learn not to lick and bite at your hand if you place the treat on the floor at first, so the hand is associated with following rather than grabbing a treat out of at first.

I do this as well. My first session with puppies is mostly spent getting puppy to follow a lure and learning how to offer behaviour. Cool concept!

No matter the distance of my hand, if she's been fed prior, my 13 week old puppy jumps towards me with an open mouth to try and get the treat consistently. Anyone have any advice on how to get her to calm down? The longer I try, the MORE jumping because she's gone from excited to frustrated.

Use a lower value treat, or just walk backward with the treats in a bait bag and click her or mark her for following you first before reaching for the treat. You can also use a high rate of reinforcement. Get the treats out and every second, mark and feed in rapid fire, so she doesnt have time to jump. You can feed the treats on the floor too. So mark for following and then put the treat down on the ground so shes nto anticipating the treat coming from above but from below. keep on going your puppy will get it :)

You can begin by simply putting a treat down on the ground, then as your pup moves forward, put down another treat so he has to move toward that. Once hes moving happily to the treats you can try the luring. Sometimes puppies are not so interested in food, but that can change with training. You could also practice using your puppies morning meal, or try just before dinner.

How to make puppy do things without treats
@kikopup
@kikopup 6 лет назад
Teach your puppy that access to things he wants to do is contingent on doing things you ask. For example, when you get out of the car at the park, the reward is getting to sniff and explore. So you could ask for him to wait, or sit, or look at you before letting him explore. I suggest first using treats and toys to teach your dogs how to do specific behaviors, rather than trying to use the environment as dogs can get stressed distracted and frustrated and its hard to add criteria. Where with treats, you can teach a behavior quickly. Then when your dog understands the behavior, ask for it, give a treat, then release to the environment with a release cue. Once your dog is a pro at that, you can then ask for a behavior then give your dog access to what he wanted. This will teach your dog that when you ask something of him its always in his best interest. The key is not asking too much of your dog.
