I use a "poor man's bidet." I recycle dish washing liquid bottles for the "bigger" job, and I fill one or two with water and use them to rinse off the affected areas. Sometimes I'll add witch hazel or vinegar if I think about it, but this is totally optional. Then the wipes are actually drying towels, and there is very little mess (if any) that gets on the towels. It has worked well for me for years.

Amen!!! We are so spoiled in this country. Go ask your 90 year old parents or grandparents what they used and the majority will tell you there was a Sears Roebuck catalog in the outhouse and they’d just rip a page out and wipe away. Most of us who are over 65 and had kids 40 years ago never used disposable diapers because they didn’t exist. Great useful video.

My mother always put the diapers to soak in an ammonia/water solution in a lidded diaper pail. We always rinsed the dirty ones in the toilet before soaking. I think she dumped most of the soak into the toilet before taking the bucket down to the basement laundry area. Then she’d dump the whole bucketful into the washer, rinse and drain and then add in baby and little kid clothes. I don’t recall ever seeing a stained one. I would’ve known because it was my job to fold them! Oldest daughter with three siblings under me. 2nd Mama job there. 😊

When our son was born, in the l99Os, I used cloth diapers w/ plastic outer, undie pants, while we were at home, which was most of the time. (I used disposable for overnight and when going to town, since it was 50 mi away) I did the same thing your mother did with the cloth diapers. I kept a 5 gal bucket of bleach water, w/ a lid, in the bathroom. I would dump the contents of dirty diapers into the toilet, flush that down, then dip the dirtiest part of the diaper into the toilet to rinse it a little before putting it into the bucket. When it was full, I would put the diapers into the washing machine, then dump the bucket waste water outside further out, at the back of our property, or into the toilet. I soaked them in hot bleach water in the washer for at least 30 nins before turning on the washer. Them I hung them out on the line to dry, except during the frigid winters. I had been gifted a Diaper Genie that was kept in the nursery for the disposable diapers. (Those are super-nice!) I kept plastic grocery bags in the diaper bag, for throwing disposable diapers away. (Years later, I was really surprised at the number of young girls who never kept those bags, and just threw away dirty diapers without bagging them first. It's quite an unpleasant surprise to find a very ripe diaper in an obscure trash can, a couple of days later, having not been told it was thrown there, haha, or walking into a public restroom where they've been tossed, unbagged.

Early in 2020, I cut up a large old white flannel sheet into rectangles, doubled them up and sewed them on my machine. Then I ordered cloth baby diapers and did the same. In my bathroom cabinet I have a good stock of reusable cloth wipes for emergencies only. I have two large white buckets w/lids, one for after use like a diaper pail, and the other with an attachable toilet seat in case I can't use the regular toilet. Also stored ammonia in the bathroom and buckets of rainwater outside. If I run out of disposable toilet paper, I'll be using cloth ones. Thanks for the useful tips! I believe in being prepared for almost anything.

As a grandmother I have used half a old towel to use as a nappy in an emergency for the grandbabies. In our day as a young mother , we loved to see all the white nappies lined up in a row on the clothes line. And we always had mainly just one size raglan sleave nighties for babies from birth to12 - 18 months old. So life was so much cheaper to have babies, everything was mainly white for both boys and girls. Home knitted booties we had with soft edging elastic tied in a knot, instead of ribbons for baby booties.

My 39 yet old son, said, "use a bidet." How about a spray bottle? After birth of one of my babies, the hospital gave me a squeeze/squirt bottle for taking care of the area. It would work for this. Some kind of oil for the skin also makes clean up much easier. IF there is a proper amount of fiber in the diet, clean up is much less "messy". Less paper is so much easier on a septic system. I have been thinking of the pioneers who were traveling in wagons & ones who had no corner grocery or supermarket. :) My grandmother told me Mullen was called "cowboy toilet paper" & was Indian tobacco.

In the 70's Johnny Carson made a joke about there not being toilet paper in the stores and everyone went out and bought it and then the store shelves were empty. I also have lots of old sheets and towels which can be used for so many things.

I forgot to mention that I've been using pee cloths for a few months, since right before the virus hit (coincidentally, I just happened to be at that stage in practicing using my preps) and I found that a great fabric for pee cloths are those microfiber cleaning rags. They are so soft and absorbent! I picked up a package of bright yellow ones at Home Depot in the cleaning section. They come in a package of about 18 or 20 cloths. Each cloth is about 12" square and it's the PERFECT size for doing bird baths. I use the blue ones for doing bird baths (bathing with just hot water and a cloth instead of getting in the tub/shower). But the yellow ones are perfect as pee cloths when cut in half. So you just need blue 12" squares (folded into quarters and refolded for washing your privates) for bathing and the yellow (6" x 12" folded in half) for pee wipes. :-)

I listened to this a couple of months ago. Then went to Walmart and bought some cloth, cut it up, washed it and I've been using it every since. It has really cut down on the use of toilet paper and saved a lot of money. Thanks for the great idea. I also bought a couple of packages of paperless towels. They are soft, about the size of a washcloth, relatively cheap and perfect for my hubby to blow his nose. We are also using cloth napkins and kitchen towels. I work 45 to 50 hrs outside the home, and I've had no problem keeping them washed up. It is just the 2 of us with our kids all gone and my husband is waiting for neck and back surgery and his help is limited. I'm glad I did it. Again, thanks!

I good way to eliminate the mess for the number two process would be to keep a squirt bottle of water to rinse parts before wiping. Then the wipes don't end up as messy. When all this crazy came out, I didn't panic at all. I am a natural for roughing it. So I instantly started thinking about what sheets/material I could tear for tp. We have 7 left in the house and five of us are females. You can imagine how much tp can be used. Another step we made was to buy condiment bottles for a water wash. I love the idea of using herbs. Awesome idea.

Thank you so much for this video. At first I thought, "I couldn't do that!" but then you mentioned it is just like the cloth diapers you used on your children and I was sold! I cut up an old flannel queen sheet but there were just too much fraying so did not use them. Hope to get them edged sometime. Another blog suggested using old t-shirts! These work great and I do not need to worry about fraying. We have been using the cloth wipes for about 4 months now and my daughter and I love them. We put them in a small bucket and there is no odor. I dump the bucket into the washer, no pre-wash, longest cycle with hot water, vinegar and extra rinse. I use a spray bottle with silver for cleaning off when needed. I have a rectocele condition and the wipes are perfect for that. Cloth does clean much better than paper.

Homemade bidet. You can use one of those pump garden sprayers next to the toilet and spray away the "cling ons" before using the cloth. The long spray nozzle can be angled for more ease of use. Or even using a plastic squeeze ketchup/mustard container. I even believe you can order something of the sort online, specifically for that purpose, possibly from an outdoor or camping site. That makes the cloth squares more for simply drying off.

I have not run out of toilet paper, but the first thing I did was go buy some cheap rags (21 for 5 dollars) and a bucket for $5. The only thing that would probably be a problem is after wiping, a person might forget and let it drop in the toilet and it would have to be pulled out before flushing. I don't really understand why so many people get squeamish about wiping their butts with cloths. I used cloth diapers for my daughter and damp cloths to clean her off. I just rinsed the cloths and diapers in water then soaked them in water with small amount of borax in it. Drained on wash day then washed in hot water with more borax a little bleach and soap. Then I'd run them through a complete cycle (wash and rinse) with plain hot water. Only time she ever had a rash was when I left her at her grandmother's for the day and grandma used commercial wipes. Nowadays, i myself used damp cloths for personal ablution after relieving myself. Unlike when I did my daughter's diapers, now I presoak, drain wash with borax and small amount of soap in hot water. Being adult i don't feel the need to sterilize or double rinse that I did for a baby

THANK you Heidi for another great & necessary topic! FUN FACT: My Grandmother died at 101 yrs of age. I remember her saying that she remembered when they didn't have toilet paper (before it was invented). They had an outhouse & they used NEWSPAPER to wipe!! Apparently, the newspaper was printed on paper that was more like linen cloth. Their dad would read the morning paper & take it in with him after... That is probably better than having to hand WASH those rags. Very few people get a daily paper anymore, & they're so full of chemicals. I can't imagine, I could wash diapers by hand if needed - babies are totally different than adults. I think I would pray that a bidet was still available & have my husband put one in. I may just do that as insurance LOL I love the idea of tinkle towels for sure. That alone would cut tp use drastically, I am well hydrated so I go often=) I am conscientious about using as little paper as needed to do the job.

Hello, I just wanted to interject as I'm understanding that you're talking about using the wipes directly on your bottom as you would TP. What I've been doing is I have two bottles in my bathroom. One has a mix I make for myself but anyone could just put some water, a drop of white vinegar and a drop of teatree oil. This I spray on myself after I pee and then I wipe with a cloth. For #2, I have a bottle that I fill with warm water and I spray myself after doing my business and then I use some liquid soap and spray again to rinse...THEN I wipe to dry. That way is the cleanest possible method and there is very little dirt or bacteria on the wipes. Obviously, this only works as long as you have access to water and I can only use it at home. But it keeps me super clean and has saved me tons of money and of course is better for the environment. :) Hope this helps. ps: love watching your channel

Viruses don't like heat, and it's the body's way of trying to destroy the virus. He said that we shouldn't be so quick to lower a temperature, unless it gets too high, especially in children. The virus can't multiple as quick when our body temperature is up. So when you lower your body's temperature, the virus starts to multiply more rapidly again. He said that it's best to tough it out, even though you will feel terrible. Lowering your temperature actually prolongs the illness. I would suggest of course that you speak with your own healthcare provider.

However, I think I might try the no water method that you suggest since I have to carry the buckets up and down two flights of stairs. Oh and when I use them for the "bigger job" I always wet them, they clean so much better that way! Thanks for the video! BTW, I just went to etsy and purchased some wooly lamb's ear seed from you. I found a chamber pot at a 2nd hand store. Cut up scrap fabric. Drop the used cloths in the chamber pot and use an old plate as a lid. Squirt bottle with water and some collodial silver (I make my own). Drops of essential oil on used cloths. Wash the cloths in a basin with a toilet plunger to agitate. Dry on a rack. Have toilet paper for guests who may freak out.

My folks told me that when they were kids, there was no toilet paper - they would tear newspaper into strips and put it in a basket in the outhouse. My mom told me that as a child, she hated this. She would go to the market and search behind the fruit and vegetable stalls for discarded tissue paper that was used to wrap delicate fruit such as peaches and grapes. She would gather those up and keep a stash to use..

I can remember having old Sears catalogs in the outhouse in case we didn't have any toilet paper, in the '50's. The toilet paper, then, was really rough, too, and the catalog pages was softer! Ha Ha

Thank you for sharing the tips, Heidi!! Usually I wash the loads of the wipes, mats, altogether. Keep stock piling them, so that you can pile them and wash them when there's a bunch of them. That way you save the water, the detergent, and extra work. Again, thank you, Heidi and God bless!!

I would suggest buying very inexpensive wash clothes that come in packs. Would hold up well . Toilet paper is now almost a dollar a roll. Imagine the cost for a family of four.

My daughter and I already cut fabric and we're going to do this route. I have another friend that's on RU-vid and her and her daughter are going to do this as well. On now another Channel message for daughter and said she's going to as well so I think people are giving it a try. We appreciate the added wisdom you always give Heidi

I am retired now, but I used to keep baby wipes in my purse to freshen up under my arms and also the other areas. I still keep baby wipes in my purse, and I keep them in the bathroom. I only recently began to remember my mom and Grandmother having "rag bags", so now, when I have a t-shirt or a towel that has worn out, I cut it up into squares and put it in my "rag bag". This is a great video, and I am happy to see so many people who are willing to adhere to it. I have been using old towels to clean up spills in the kitchen for years. Thank you!

Some thoughts: I used cloth diapers back in 1989. My husband couldn't stand the smell from the diaper pail where the diapers were soaking. He had me try leaving the lid off. It worked! The smell had grown in the covered bucket. Also: I appreciated the idea of using baking soda. I am waiting a while before making a stack of cloths, but I like these ideas. I have lots of old flannel children's sheets that wore out in the middle and therefore ripped. I saved them to make quilts with when I became a grandma. So I have a stock in boxes in the attic! And now I'm glad the lamb's ear took over the front flower bed, if this lasts until they grow up and die out! They use leaves in the bush of PNG, and I think the leaves were exactly like coleus (the natives call it "Everlasting.") I was amazed at the cute containers to put the used ones into. So smart and also aesthetic. The ideas for using quirt bottles remind me of the peri bottle that the midwife gave me to use after I tore a little during childbirth. She had me put healing herbs into the water. It doesn't take very much, so making a healthy skin tea might be good for any future bowel troubles. John 3:16!

Yes I have been using my 40- 4x4" double thickness flannel squares for about 10 years now. They are the perfect size and they just don't wear out I did surge the ends together to keep them neat and together. I too only use them for the light jobs and I use the TP for the bigger jobs. But there is no reason not to do this. It makes you feel so good about yourself. I also use the bathroom a lot through the night so to lasts me through whole week I would double this amount to 80. I believe I started out with 50 and then a few times forgot and flushed a few down. Anyway, I use a small shiny metal trash can from Walmart that has a foot peddle to open it with. I line it with a mesh zippered bag so all I have to do is take it out, zip it up and throw it in the Sunday wash with the laundry.

This sounds a little gross but as my parents did with diapers, if there is too much matter on the cloth. Flush toilet then dunk the cloth in toilet till matter comes off cloth. Then put cloth in a container with lid till you can transport container to washing machine. We had a porcelain diaper bucket with a tight lid. This kept the smell down till we wash the diapers. It's getting back to how we did things in the old days before disposable diapers.

I was taught this method for cleaning out period undies also! My mom said, flush it clear then hold the dirty item in one hand and flush a second time... the water movement rinses the cloth. Then you wring out the water, toss into laundry pile and wash your hands. Easy Peasy. People are too squeamish now days♡

I used terry nappies for all four of my babies. What is the problem a lot of people have with washing them? We just got on with it. When someone was expecting a baby it was like a signal that the baby had been born when a row of lovely white nappies (I am in UK) appeared on the washing line. I used the same nappies for all of my babies and they were as white as the day I bought them though getting a bit thin. I see parents leaving the supermarket laden down with packets of disposable nappies which are only going to clog up the earth while they take hundreds of years to bio-degrade. They are wasting so much money. I use cloth pads and have a portable bidet for in the toilet. Shortage of toilet rolls? There is no need for a shortage. Oh I could go on for hours how mothers were hoodwinked into using disposable nappies. The figures they (the manufacturers) gave out were flawed. They quoted the cost of terries as expensive because they quoted one washload for one nappy!!! Right, rant over! Keep safe and well.

I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE SOMEONE ELSE WHO THINKS LIKE ME!!!!! Last year my husband said that I use to much toilet paper, so I took some old bath towels that had seen better days and I ripped them up into squares. I use them for #1 only. If I need to do #2, then I rinse myself with a bide (sorry can't spell) basically it is a metal hose and sprayer made to attach to the underside of the toilet tank and hangs on the side of the tank. (My daughter in law is from a country that does not generally use toilet paper, it is a luxury item and mainly used for xpats and visitors from countries that use T.P.) So what they use is a sprayer of sorts. So that is what I use for #2 and then I dry off with a square. Easy. Saving Money and it does feel cleaner than paper and softer. Why not? People use cloth diapers and cloth wipies for their babies, I do not see the difference really. Thanks for sharing what you share. Very informative and interesting.

OH.... Do you mean 'bidet'? I know in Europe it is more common than in the US. Also in Thailand, I think they might use them. We don't have the little hose and sprayer here in the US. the bidets I have seen were like a water-fountain-toilet! ha ha. thanks for your input!

I'm 67 and was raised by my grandmother down south for a while, till I had to move with my mom to California. My grandparents lived on a farm.. How I long for the old days! So, I've been thinking about alternatives now. I bought some spray bottles to spray after "bathroom duties", then use cloths. I have bad allergies and have used a lot of paper products for blowing my nose. I'm going to use the flannel squares idea for that purpose! It's much softer anyway. My grandparents also used hankies! :)

We live just north of Detroit in a little town called Marysville. And it was just crazy watching the people buy the toilet paper here. But yesterday the store was already restocking. And there was a limit put on how many you could buy. Along with the eggs and other important groceries. It’s just pure madness. I enjoyed your video on using cloth for our uses in the bathroom. I was just going to plan on using washcloths if I ran out of toilet paper. But that would’ve taken about a month and a half. Because it’s just my husband and me. And we only buy four rolls at a time. 😉 also A suggestion for the city folks. They can get bidet.

I have not been able to find any anywhere. So this will help conserve. You do bring out and share great information.

I just made some flannel wipes. I cut two layers of flannel 5in square. Zigzag around the outside. Washed them trimmed up the lose threads. Put them in a basket on the back of the toilet. I have a narrow cereal container with the flip top lid where I place the dirty ones. My plan is to put them in a zippered mesh bag for washing. I raised my kids in cloth diapers. I remembered my grandmother using rags. We are so spoiled in our nation. There are only two of us. I made 50 wipes.
