▶︎Free Video Lesson: 8 Ways to Avoid Overworking Your Watercolor Painting www.learntopaintwatercolor.co...
Sometimes I feel like trying to decide what to paint almost takes longer than actually painting it.
Maybe you can relate. Have you ever felt like you were wasting your precious creative time just finding that one reference photo that sparks some inspiration?
I have some advice for you to consider and three action steps that will help you to streamline this process.
Here’s my advice:
There is no perfect reference photo. Feel free to exercise your creative license. Rearrange things, change the time of day, add some shadows - whatever fulfills your creative vision.
You do not have to choose commonly painted scenes. Anything can be beautiful, interesting, and evoke emotion. If you are inspired by it, paint it.
Pay attention to what you pay attention to. No one else has quite the same sensitivities and curiosities that you do. Just being attentive to the things that capture your attention in daily life can attune you to scenes that will inspire you.
The three action steps are practical ways to hone your sensitivities, to investigate them, and to have some ideas queued up for the week ahead. Click here to watch this week’s video where I offer these helpful tips.
Check out my recommended watercolor brush collection.

As always great insight Mat. Reminds of a Yogi Berra quote where he says " You got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there".

Thank you very much for all of your lessons. I’ve learned more from you than any other instructor. For the first time I painted clouds the other day that I absolutely loved and I have you to thank.

Excellent advice, Matt! I’m really enjoying watching your videos which is interesting because I usually watch videos about oil painting. Your teaching style is excellent. I was a teacher too and understand how difficult it can be. Bravo! 👏🏼

Thanks for the great tips! I haven't started watercolor painting yet (too many other craft projects in progress) but was feeling a bit stumped on what to paint after doing color swatches, brush exercises, etc. But watching you, I started remembering nature photos I took years ago for future reference that would make good subjects now. Time to search through them and compile an art image inspiration "portfolio". 🙂

Thanks so much! I'm new to watercolor and this is very helpful to me. I sometimes just really want to practice a texture or form and sometimes I want it to be a whole subject. I'll make myself a shortcut to those types of inspiration images.

Thanks Michael. You tend to give advice that is slightly different in approach to many other artists' advice and very relevant , at least to my painting experience and painting hurdles.

Great tips! This is a problem I am very familiar with. I have found some solutions of my own. First, I rate all my reference photos with stars to weed out the bad from the good ones. Then, I label some of the photos that are extra great with "to paint". I can always go to that selection if I am confronted with too much choice. Another trick: random number generator! If you're really stuck, look up an online integer generator and then generate 3 to 4 numbers in a row. Photos usually have lots of numbers in their file names. Insert the random sequence into the search bar of your photo app, and you will get a small and random selection of paintings. You can change the number of results by filtering with stars, or by adding or removing numbers from the search sequence. Not satisfied yet? Simply roll the die again! :-)

I often have the "yikes what to paint" so I started a folder of ideas, and now it's "yikes, I forgot to set up my desk the night before and free up digital space". Arg, but good strategies.
