Yes, it will! I made a video with salt, but it was mainly about cleaning and not rust so much. Thanks for sharing this with my friend!

Also, I saw someone's video where they said in their trials the apple cider vinegar works no better than white vinegar. I have just started restoring a bunch of cast iron in varying condition, some rusty, some not. I've noticed that flash rust starts really fast after doing a lye bath strip on my non rusty pieces. After scrubbing & rinsing after coming out of lye, I do a quick dry with paper towels and oil up while piece is still wet. That way I can head off some rust and the piece has oil coating on it as I drive off moisture in a 225 F oven.

I always put my rusted cast iron in a lye bath first. Sometimes burned on food particles hide the existence of rust beneath. Also, dark spots which appear as old seasoning can hide the rust beneath. Soaking in a lye bath will remove those food particles and old seasoning and expose the rust. Sometimes I have to do a vinegar bath several times to get off all the rust, including rust beneath the dark spots.

Good info Mike. I guess I’m more barbaric than most. For really bad rust I reach for the #80 grit rust be gone and… well you know where this is heading… 😲😉

Hey Mike great info as always. I found a Lodge round corn bread pan that is super rusted.... been outside for months. I'm probably going to try this technique just to see what happens. I may have to hit you up for more advice....it's pretty crusty!

Sounds like sound advice to me. However, even if I were to find a deal on a piece of CI, even if it looked well cared for, I'd probably still take the piece down and reseason it myself if it was used. That would be it's new "birthday/date to schedule future maintenance from, seasoned with what I like, and I'd know what I have. But that's just me. When it concerns putting food in my mouth, I don't want bite into a plum only to find out it's a prune. TYFS Mike
