Honestly , thank you so much for this video a lot of coaches go over how to rest for the match and how to look respectable , but not many coaches go over how to actually maintain yourself throughout the day again , thank you for this video

I am just going to go down point-by-point the different issues I have with this: Your brain is going to maintain a pretty constant level of glucose in the CSF, no matter what. If you have a keto diet, you still maintain that glucose level. Your body, liver and kidney in particular, make glucose when needed via a process called gluconeogenesis. You can smell the ketones on the breath of kids that are cutting super hard, and this is an alternative energy source other parts of the body use. Not really where you want young athletes, but people can read more on it if you know it exists. "Common knowledge...empty stomach" for performance is something I very much disagree with. For starters, you have a parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system that is more than capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time, or rather eating and wrestling. Blood is not going to "pool in your gut." There might be some benefits in VO2 max in distance runners in fasting, but I don't think that was clear (there are studies that go both ways). There is a ton of literature on fasting and athletic performance because a large part of the world celebrates Ramadan, and that goes a long way towards funding research. At best, fasting doesn't hurt performance, but it is pretty clear it is not going to be helpful for most athletic situations. In helping my son in his decision making on this, I approached it as a whole season perspective. With duals and tournaments, this mentality of calorie restriction can lead to 2/7 of the season being impacted. While only a small number of wrestlers fall in the hypogonadism range of testosterone, wrestlers are typically much closer to that point than non-calorie restricted sports (so the lower end of normal). This video is older (5 years at the time of my comment), and there has been a very significant growing body of evidence of the impact of Male Athlete Triad. For those with daughters or for moms that are/were athletes, the much more obvious Female Athlete Triad was first described because of the impacts on the menstrual cycle. But, we know that this impacts boys, now, and for the same reasons, and wrestlers are particularly vulnerable because of advice that is "common knowledge" that does not actually improve performance, and likely harms it (more to come). I would challenge parents or wrestlers reading this to ask what they want of their bodies in the days following the dual or tournament, and what do they think they need to do to prepare their body for that. I do like the idea here focusing on complex carbohydrates. I also think watering down the Gatorade is a good idea (speeds up absorption) that you indirectly mentioned. Sensation of thirst is one of the best indicators of dehydration. To take from a paper looking at dehydration in college wrestlers, "[d]ehydration (defined as a 1% or greater loss of body weight) has been shown to reduce aerobic and anaerobic capacity, muscular strength and power as well as cognitive performance...Dehydration‟s impact on sports performance factors has the potential to severely impair peak wrestling performance. Dehydration reduces aerobic and anaerobic capacity as well as muscular strength and power, all of which are important to wrestling performance. Given a 2 -3% reduction in body mass has been shown to inhibit exercise performance," kids should be eating and drinking an appropriate amount to meet their performance goals. Friends at both the college and professional level for football get tested before practice to ensure they are hydrated for their safety and to ensure better performance (my friend in the NFL gets tested after practice, too). In the video, you mentioned drinking a gallon of water, which in itself is dangerous, but if a kid is to that point, someone should intervene and have him wrestle up a weight class.

Take a gallon of water, take out 12 fl. oz of the water, replace with coconut water. Put in 2 tablespoons of raw honey and sea salt, possibly potassium salt. Use this as a hydrating tool after weigh ins, and drink another one throughout the day of your tourney. Coconut water, sea salt, and potassium salt replenish electrolytes, raw honey is half fructose and glucose, these sugars will aid in mineral absorption and replenishing glycogen muscle stores. Cheat code basically if the rest of your diet is on point
