I live in Montana but travel to Knoxville, Iowa, each August for the sprint car races. Between Pella and Knoxville alone I have plenty of great eating places to choose from. However. I haven't yet tried the breaded pork you mentioned. I'll be sure to put that item at the top of my list for my visit this summer. BTW, I love those Twin Bings which are also available where I live.
Here’s a don’t in iowa: don’t try to steal corn from a random corn field and cook it yourself. 9 times out of 10 it will be feed corn and hard as a rock even when you cook it
🤣🤣🤣🤣 seriously! Non midwest people actually think the millions of acres of corn 🌽 are sweet corn or that livestock eats the same corn we do. Cracks me up.
Not to mention when corn is ready to harvest there is so much corn everywhere you can get a dozen ears fora buck or so, really not worth the waisted effort
Twin Bing 😳😆 This was extra enjoyable because I know little about Iowa cuisine (corn, Maytag blue cheese, loose meat, QC pizza). Maid-Rite is famous but I’ve only had the Wichita, KS equivalent from NuWay. Didn’t know loose meat sandos originated in Illinois. *Awesome vintage photo* @3:45. 👍 I’m a fried catfish fan.
I second going to the Amana Colonies because not only is there a lot of good food but the brewery has its own sodas (and it’s delicious) alongside its beer selections.
I remember going caroling with a church group I was with around to a bunch of old folks homes. When we got done we ended back up at the organizers house at like 2 am or later eating home made breakfast pizza.
I grew up near the Amana's, the ONLY horse and buggies you'll find there is a horse drawn carriage. The Amana's are NOT Amish. The closest Amish community to the Amana's is Kalona.
I agree with everything except Casey's pizza. It's doughy, bland, salty shit. I've lived in Iowa my whole life and watched Casey's and Kum and Go take over the state like a damn cult.
I might be a heretic but I have had to eat that glop from Casey’s more often than I have ever wanted to. There are so many awesome pizza places in Iowa and yet Iowans “just love that Casey’s pizza” Wanna know why? Because it’s cheap, and Iowans by and large are cheap. Cheap = good. Bleeech. Doughy, soggy, greasy, salty, undercooked and bland.... but it’s cheap!! And a Iowa tradition.... makes me embarrassed.
@@seththomas9105 Pagliai's and Pizza Ranch are far better. Even the little grocery store in Brooklyn had better pizza than Casey's, but they couldn't compete. The reason I eat Casey's pizza is because it's the only pizza in town.
@@sixchuterhatesgoogle3824 That's a sad but true reality in most of this state. And Casey's never changes anything, and why would they? People just line up to eat that doughy, undercooked bland, salty crap. I eat a bag of Cheeto's before Casey's pizza.
Well, I did spend my first 18 years watching the news from Ottumwa. And every Thanksgiving and summer in the Quad Cities. But sadly. They aren't on i80. And the funny part is the only time I was on i80 when filming my Iowa videos was from des moines to Madison County exit.
@@woltersworld I-80 skirts the north side of the Quad Cities, I'll give you Ottumwa as it is on Hwy 34. News from Ottumwa would have been KTVO channel 3 which is Kirksville / Ottumwa. Unless you are talking Fox 15 KYOU out of Ottumwa and if you are an old timer like me you'll remember when it was an independent station and called KIOA.
@@sonnyhootman9811 Dude, I am not going to argue with you about this. All I am going to say is stink bait is way better than sticky bait when it comes to catching catfish on the Mississippi.
@@woltersworld you should come to our annual fish fry in the fall. I think you would find it of great interest. Some of us dip our catfish in Ranch as you stated. But, after visiting you would want to extend your video to include Iowans love of Busch Light Beer. Everyone here will drink it socially even if it isn't their favorite. We also drive into Illinois to buy it as we can't get 30 packs in our state, only cases and they are the same price. We call it a dirty 30 run, basically bootlegging when we bring back to much.
and in Cedar Rapids (home of the National Czech Slovak Museum) there are kolache..Mostly fruit ones, prune, cherry, apple, cheese, and my favorite poppy seed filling. Sykora Bakery down in "Bohemie town/16th Ave" makes them
I have been making pizza videos and other types of food videos on my channel lately. One thing I haven't tried is the pizza from iowa. Is a comparable to chicago?
In Des Moines you will find a few deep dish like Felix & Oscars. There are actually a lot of Italians and some Greeks that settled in Iowa and there are some awesome pizza places all over the state. Mostly Neapolitan and Sicilian style.. PS Don’t eat the Casey’s pizza. It’s a gas station and you get what you pay for, glop that fills a hole.
If you're in the Amana Colonies, the best place to eat is Ox Yoke Inn. Excellent food, from sandwiches to chops and steaks to authentic German food, served family style.
If you want to get AUTHENTIC Amish products and food, Kalona, Iowa is where to go. Especially when they have the roadside produce and baked goods set up alongside the road in front of their farm houses.
Do NOT get the breakfast pizza with the cheese sauce, it's NASTY. Get it with gravy! Oh yeah, breakfast pizza with sausage gravy as the sauce, so damn good. And yes, I do live in Iowa. We are more than corn, we are also soy beans and pigs.
I was a cheese sauce breakfast pizza guy as the couple times I found the gravy base kind i wasnt impressed... BUT THEN I found a place with bombdiggity gravy as the base and it was incredible!!!
Casey's tenderloins are serviceable, but the best are always going to be from some small family owned restaurant or bar in some small out of the way town
I’ve followed you all around the world for years and you made a pit stop in my home town to have some quad cities style pizza?!?! Btw the scotcheroos have butterscotch chips melted in with the chocolate for the topping ☺️☺️
I just made a couple videos in Iowa within the last few months. But I did not go to quad cities. My mom told me that I should go there. We went to Amana colonies and cedar rapids so far. Very cool places so far. Is there good coffee shops and other places to check out there?
@@markrichardsocioprojectgo1800 you definitely should visit! Grab a New Orleans style iced coffee from Red Band and take a drive through the historic McClellan Heights neighborhood. The best QC style pizza is from Uncle Bills IMO.
Butterscotch chips. I couldn't place it. I just saw them EVERYWHERE and knew I had to add them in there. And my mom's parents are from the quad cities so we used to spend every Thanksgiving up in the quad cities. The quad city style really is an easier way to eat pizza
@@btetschner sadly I was only visiting from out of town and missed those things. I like the Casey's experience though, definitely. I think I only purchased tourist items, a figurine or something. But fun(!) - and so important during a storm.
Born and raised in Iowa, sauerkraut and Canadian bacon pizza, mm-mm! And, dude, you forgot the kolaces at Sycora's Bakery in Cedar Rapids in Czech Village.
Dont know if they only in Iowa or not but there was this place on 2nd ave. In Desmoines that had the best mushroom and swiss burger I have ever eaten to this day
If you stop at one of the Amana restaurants, give the kassler ripchen (smoked pork chops) a try--and for this Arkansas/Oklahoma boy for whom bologna was that nasty pink stuff, Pella bologna was a revelation. Try it.
I’m so happy when I’m eating the tenderloin before I get to the bun. I’m also very happy when I’m eating a cheese rite. You missed Muscatine melons. Mmmmm… peak season watermelon!
I was going to eat there but ended up going to this Lebanese restaurant downtown and it was so good. So I kissed out on the pizza but had some good Lebanese food
Breakfast pizza might be the most American thing I've ever heard of. I hope i get to visit USA some day, i will double in weight but I'm sure it'll be worth it. 😅
I grew up near Iowa. I've never, ever met a person who didn't rave about the Twin Bings. Maybe it was because we were all kids at the time and kids like anything so sweet. By the way, you were in Texas awhile ago at Buc-ee;s. They have a candy that is awfully similar to a Twin Bing called the Beaver Hut. The major difference is that a Beaver Hut has a real cherry inside.
Sorry born and raised in iowa though I haven't been back in a number of years. I couldn't stand those things. Hated it every time I got one for trick or treating
I grew up in Eastern Iowa and lived part of my adult life there as well and I never heard of them until today. I see the wrapper says they are from Sioux City is it a Western/Central Iowa thing?
@@smujer1 Is it a more western Iowa thing? Cause I've never seen it in a store before. Would love to try one someday, but I've never had the chance! I just looked to see what places around me might have some and none do, and I would have to order them online.
@@seththomas9105 definitely worth the trip. I went there one year and my brother asked me, jokingly, to bring Mabes pizza back with me. We both lived in Cedar Rapids at the time so I brought back the leftovers for him. I have lots of relatives there in Decorah, my parents were born there and go there as often as possible
I likeTwin Bing. I liked Cherry MASH even better. Pork tenderloins are tasty. Deep fried tacos at Tasty Taco is a treat. Boasted chicken is a must. Not responsible for unwanted weight gain.
Visiting the country's second oldest barber school in Des Moines, one of the rural barber shops, Madison county sunsets (including the touristy bits), small towns at the peak and the end of the summer - nearby Runnell's or others further out, Maid Rites, Ames just after the fall semester starts, some of the little known jazz bars, Quick Trip fountain with QT ice on a road trip.
You can get a great tenderloin at Smokey D's Barbecue in Des Moines! They're massive and not uniform size. Cut inhouse, breaded and served up to your order!
The mountains are 4 hrs away. I don’t think it’s so bad, is it? Crime is everywhere, it happens everywhere, that why you stay mentally and physically fit to protect yourself. And beaches is hard to deal with. Sand everywhere, damn it it’s everywhere!!! The sun burn!!! No I need to heal
A Scotcharoo usually includes some butterscotch in it. I'm not a fan of butterscotch so it's always a war between the peanut butter bars or the ones that also include butterscotch.
My family is originally from Pella, Iowa, even though I live in Kansas City today. I'm not a fan of the Twin Bing candy bars. They're OK. But I do love the Cherry Mash candy bars that are made in St. Joe, MO. Same idea but with a different spin. BTW, every time I return to Pella I eat piles of Dutch letters and gain 10lbs. Good stuff.
Could you suggest a place in the Des Moines area for giant tenderloins? I'm FROM Iowa, and I've seen them in videos, but I've never actually seen a huge tenderloin. The normal size ones are good, so I'm sure these are too. May be we're too far northwest. We're only 30 miles from Sioux Falls, SD.
Do the pork producers still do pork patty sandwiches at the fair? It's just like a hamburger but pork. And it's just simple seasoned pork served with pickles and mustard. Scotcharoos have butterscotch chips melted into the chocolate. What about fried cheese curds? Batter fried squeakies! I found some recently here in Texas at Chiles and brought me to tears. You covered all my favs. My hometown is...Nashua. little brown church is there with the adjacent Bradford settlement pre Nashua. About a mile down the road some family friends of ours have a campground. It was a great place to grow up.
Best Pizza, hands down is Casey’s Pizza. Just ask Ashton Kutcher! If you want something super special, Check out the Brickhouse in Indianola. They have Sicilian, Chicken Bacon Ranch(the pizza sauce is ranch😍), Chicken SpinArt, Crab Ragoon, and so many more! Also, another unique food experience is Zombie Burger. Only in Iowa can you get a burger with fried Mac & cheese as a bun! Scotchroos are made with butterscotch chips. They were originally made with oats and called oatmeal scotchies. The oats were switched with rice crispies.
As an Iowan, I will tell you to not bother. Casey's pizza sucks. I only eat it, because I can buy it by the slice, and it's the only pizza in town. Pagliai's and Pizza Ranch are far better.
Breaded pork tenderloins are one of the heartiest, tastiest sandwiches you'll ever have, and they are a freaking Iowa institution. One of those and a drink can make a meal for most eaters. Usually, the preferred method of topping one is a great big squirt of yellow mustard and a handful of pickle slices (either dill or bread-and-butter). Ketchup's not really something you put on them (usually it's for the fries if they come with the sandwich), pork usually always gets mustard. Yes, they are as huge as they seem in the picture provided, and they're tasty as long as you get to them while they're still fresh and/or warm and the pork is still juicy. Maid-Rites... wonderful, tasty, but messy Maid-Rites (it's almost impossible to eat a Maid-Rite without making a mess). Drawing on my time in Iowa, never ever ever EVER put ketchup on a Maid-Rite. I mean, it's just not done because the ketchup kills all the flavors in the sandwich. If you want a squirt of yellow mustard, that's fine. You want cheese sauce on it? They call that a Cheese-Rite, that's great too. But don't douse one in ketchup unless you want to get some funny looks. 3:57 - Yeah... the Mississippi isn't exactly the cleanest river out there (also, if you take a boat ride, wear a helmet because of the asian carp that infest it now).
The Bing, if you haven't eaten one before, you need to eat two in a row to calibrate your taste buds. Some years ago, Alton Brown was doing a road food series. He gave his crew Bings and Cherry Mash bars. Cherry Mash has low quality chocolate loaded with paraffin and way too sweet cherry nouget. The crew preferred Cherry Mash. To each their own, but I find Cherry Mash vile! Just too sweet and too low quality.
Iowa has some great food and places to eat, but Casey's Pizza is not it. From a person that has spent most of his life in Iowa, Casey's is just generic gas station pizza.
