My humerus fractured into two parts four months ago, necessitating surgery. I was armeressle with a friend when I had a sudden fracture. The doctor corrected it with internal fixation, and I began working out again after two months, quickly regaining my muscles. I understand that those who watch this video are likely to be injured or devastated. So I am happy to share my experience.
Ty man it helps! I just broke my humeruus 2 weeks ago in arm wrestling lmao, no plate was needed fortunately, only 4 screws, doc says it will take 6 months and my arm will be as good as it was, so i can go back to the gym
what did you do during the recovery that helped you along? any supplements? it’s my second week post-op and i still don’t have full range of motion in my arm, i can’t straighten out or contract the elbow fully… hoping to resume gym eventually and perhaps it’ll improve strength/flexibility on its own
I'm a 65 year old powerlifter and I broke my left humerus mid shaft while doing squat lock outs with 625 lbs. It was a freak accident when I tried to place the bar back in the rack, I push my elbow forward too hard and my humerus broke. I'm 10 days post surgery and I'm feeling much better except for being hot all the time! I've already had 1 rehab session which really helped get the blood flowing in the arm. Hopefully, I'll be back to light training in 3 months! If you read this, I hope your recovery is speedy and pain free!💯🫡
Wishing you a speedy recovery as well sir, I broke my proximal humerus a few weeks ago and I had no idea how much pain fractures can cause as this was my first time breaking anything. All the best to anyone going through something similar.
@omapasivan7558 Hi OmapasIvan! Yes, the plates will stay in as well as the screws. My surgeon said that after a year, my humerus would be completely healed and able to handle my heavy weight training. I have a short video on my channel with an x-ray of my repaired arm. 🫡
@@Alabama_Kurt Thanks! that's very reassuring, I'm also having a surgery next week and I'm just afraid and kept overthinking if I can still be able to hit the gym or not.
I broke my right humerus 5 months ago during a friendly arm wrestling match against a friend so to help anyone that may find thenselves in a similar situation a I gonna give some advice about what helped me through this. First couple of months: This is the hardest part, basically you can't use your arm for anything and can't do anything to speed up de recovery but keep calm. This will be the worst and you just need to eat well, rest and lift the arm with a pillow during your sleep to help to reduce the edema. After a month it will be wise to take extra protein, calcium and vitamin D. Casket removal: Probably aftee the 2-3 months your arm will be free and you will find out that you have lost a lot of muscle mass and movility. Take your time, contact with a physician and begin rehabilitation. Week after week you will improve but don't rush it. 4 months: This is the moment in which depending of your age and diet the bone may be ready for some very lite work out. Begin slowly and with biceps motions keeping your arm below your shoulder and a straight wrist. Listen to your body and stop at any pain or significant disconfort (a slight disconfort is normal). Again, don't try to rush it. Keep the weight very light and do slow controled movements. The point is to carefully accostum your arm to aplying force again. 5-6 months: At this point, with a good diet (Ca 2+, vitamin C, protein, etc) you will appreciate an good inprovement in strengh. This is the point I'm currently in, so I can't advise you further ahead. I'm just gonna say that total recovery is a long proccess for up to a year so don't stop training, eat well, rest and be patient. At this point your everyday life will be totally normal and you should focus on improving everyday. Just to clarify, even when you were unable to use your arm, remember that you still have another one and two legs. Train them. The testostero and increased blow flow generated will help you recover faster and even prevent to some extend the atrophy of the injured arm. Stay safe and keep calm.❤ You will get out of there with a cool scar (although you can erase to some extend if you want) to brag about.
@@imthebest8934 I needed a aligment surgery because of the way my bone broke, but depending on the kind of fracturr you had you might not need one. After 9 months I am working out with good weight but at a 60% total strenght. You will be able to perform two handed exercises as pull ups and bench press but total recovery may be up to a year. Stay patient 🦾
Thank you. This was very helpful. I am a two weeks on this adventure and your descriptions ease my mind. Vitamin D, E, C, K help me with "rebuilding the deck". I got myself using a code word: Cantilever. It reminds me to lean forward and let the injured arm-in-a-sling sway out from body before I move my torso. It also reminds me that I need gentleness and a few extra seconds to adjust.
I fractured mine and I didn't even get any painkillers. Someone should make a video about how to sleep during the first few weeks because that's what bothered me the most .😢😢😢
A good way to sleep is to sleep on your back in an elevated position as gravity would help to keep the arm stable and not have the bone bend from the little bit of room the break allows for. You can either sleep in a reclining chair or put a couple bricks or books under the feet of your bed (only at the front). Get your arm stabilized with perhaps a pillow beneath it and then sleep. It'll be tough to stay on your back but whenever you wake up make sure you fall asleep on your back again.
My mom fell putting on slippers, she’s 83 and just lost her balance. I heard a loud popping sound. She’s in a lot of pain, but luckily she’s with me. No surgery. Everything is taken care of.❣️
Updating for anyone who might find this helpful in the future. It has been about a year and a half after breaking my arm. On the first surgery titanium plate with eight screws was inserted. I had radial nerve palsy (i.e. wrist drop) and took eight months to totally recover from it. Week by week, month by month I was seeing slight improvement. My bone was completely healed after four months, started working out after 8-9 months with no more than six or seven kilograms on my injured arm, as heavier would cause pain, probably because plates were still there. After a year and three months from injury, I did another surgery for plate removal. The rehabilitation process was much easier and faster than the first surgery. I was feeling no pain after about four days. But there was one problem, which was radial nerve palsy (again). To be specific, I had no problems with moving my hand before the second surgery, the issue only occurred right after the operation. I started physiotherapy where I was doing exercises, electrical stimulation, phonophoresis, and massages. One month after all these treatments I had zero results. I was advised to do an electromyogram for diagnosing an injury. They said that the radial nerve was badly damaged and compressed. The only thing I could do to repair it was neurosurgery. The complete rehabilitation will take another twelve to eighteen months. This complication was caused by the mistake and carelessness of a surgeon. So, if you are in the same situation, pick a doctor who more is responsible and experienced.
@@ethancollier4875 The wrist drop almost never lasts for just a day. Even in the minor injury of the nerve, it can take 1-3 months before full mobility of the wrist and fingers are returned. One month ago I had surgery of nerve reconstruction for radial nerve. The surgeon had to cut the nerve and sew it back together so recover would be possible. I've already started physiotherapy and full rehabilitation takes up to year and a half. So I am not sure why you think that there is nothing I can do about it.
@@lalanet1362 Hey Stay strong. It will pass. I had a wrist drop from a similar surgery. I thought I was done for. But it came back gradually. The first small movement was enough for me to gain confidence that it will start moving again. The worst part was the shoulder stiffness. I can move my arm now easily and can do weightlifting but at some angles, the shoulder still hurts a bit.
Why did you get the second surgery done? 99% of the time, doctors let the plates inside if it's not bothering too much. I was thinking of getting the plate removed myself but the wrist drop thing scared me enough to not go through that again.
@@ZookLife I was advised by multiple surgeons and also when I had plates, my arm would hurt by lifting more than eight kilograms. After the nerve injury, when did you first see improvements? Thanks for the kind words!
I broke my humerus at the top end of the shaft... a simple break. Dr said no surgery was necessary & to take it out of the sling and move it as much as possible. Ordered 18 weeks of physio. Happened during Covid and it was difficult to get to the physio's office. Neighbor who is a physio gave me a pulley exercise piece of equipment and advised me on progressive exercises to help speed my recovery. I also turned to RU-vid for advice on exercises. Swift recovery, about 6 weeks. Most difficult thing I dealt with during recovery was trying to wash my hair in the shower!
I fell off my horse and broke my humerus mid-shaft. They sent me home from the ER with just a small cloth sling and it took 4 days to get in to the fracture clinic. They put a weighted cast on it for a couple weeks which killed my shoulder. After that it was a clamshell which was way better. Tried to treat it conservatively and waited 6 months until finally the referral to a surgeon came. Another month of waiting for surgery. I was so excited to finally be done with it I wasn’t even nervous about surgery, which was my first time ever even being admitted to a hospital. Recovery from surgery was more painful than I expected but worst was my shoulder pain from not being able to lift my arm for 7 months! I’m still dealing with that pain long after my arm healed! I wish they would’ve operated MUCH sooner. Had a wonderful surgeon 👨⚕️. I was so thankful to get it done before COVID hit. I don’t think I could’ve managed much longer with that arm 🥴
I had a mid shaft fracture in December, no surgery needed as it aligned well with a brace. The brace was taken off after 8 weeks. The bone did not heal until 5 months. I am still working on mobilising the shoulder and progress is slow but sure. At 4 months I had a callus at the top part of the fracture but not at the bottom. I became very strict with my diet at that point, no alcohol, caffeine, increased my calcium and protein intake, vitamin C, E, D, K2. This made a big difference as the bone finally healed. Pain was minimal as long as the advise was followed. I had to be patient with use and progress but it paid of as my arm feels a lot stronger after 5 and a half months and I am back at work which is manual. One thing I learned is that there are no short cuts with recovery!
So they put a brace & not a sling when you fractured it? If so, could you take off the brace easily when you had to shower? How many mg of each vitamin did you take?
Blessings on you. My bone Dr. was dismissive when I wanted to discuss nutritional adaptations. My friend advised adding Turmeric and Omega-3 supplements. One site I visited said to get the protein from fish and chicken but not red meat. I think it's fun that D E C K2 are the vitamins and we are rebuilding a deck in our bodies. :)
Hii bro, I'm also going through mid shaft humerus bone fracture... 3 months gone..no radial nerve issue but cant take my hand up completely...elbow is 50% stiffed ..all my friends who suffered fracture are advising for surgery..bt doct telling that it may take 3-4 more months to heal... Bt physio telling to go for surgery.. no issue from shoulder and wrist ..only bone broke.... Healing depends on type of fracture.. horizontal or vertical.. plz suggest ur opinion on conservative nonoperative treatment and on my doubts too....plz
@@raj__1086 surgery is quicker for healing but can have more complications and pain later on. If you can afford to allow it to heal without surgery, and commit yourself to the physiotherapy, then long term it is less likely to cause you problems. Hope you have a good outcome.
New sub here. I have a three-part proximal humerus fracture. I appreciate hearing you say the amount of pain involved in this fracture is quite painful. The road to recovery can be stiff, painful and long. Radial nerve damage etc. Dr’s, that sugar coat this fracture or don’t say anything at all are not helping us manage our pain and our mobility issues. We need to hear what our expectations realistically should be moving forward, so thank you for your straightforward, upfront advice. I appreciated it. I'm going conservative with X-rays every two weeks. Dr showed me how to take my sling off at two weeks to stretch my elbow gently. It is so fragile yet so inflamed. Now that I know how long the healing process will be, I'm throwing myself into PT in 13 days which is also my four week mark. (1 doc wanted me to wait 6 weeks for PT) The pain does lessen, guys. But other things will start to happen. The pooling of blood, for instance, at the elbow, I won't lie, hurts A LOT. Focus on what you can do for relief and healing. I got a stress ball to keep flection going. I rented a recliner works wonders sitting upright. Got a memory foam travel pillow to helps alleviate neck pain while sleeping in the chair. Sleeping is, without a doubt, the absolute most challenging thing to do. Lots of advise on here on this. Pain keeps me awake. For pain, I warm up my elbow with heat then massage the front and back of the massive bruises around the elbow with GlymedPlus Arnica Healing Cream, keeping my shoulder stable. I can even open my arm slightly enough to rub arnica on the part of the arm that presses against my body while in the sling. This hurts too. I stopped the heavy pain meds. Tylenol, Aleve and a small dose of Tramadol get me through. I feel hopeful I won’t need all three much longer. Good luck to all of you. 🙌
I got lucky with my mid shaft fracture because it happened at work so I didn't have to pay for anything but I'm having some issues with my arm now that I haven't had before. I broke my arm in what I would call a freak accident, this happened on dec 21st, 2021. I was just doing my job which involves heavy lifting constantly (50 lbs) and it broke in half like that. Keep in mind that I don't have cancer or a tumor (they tested for this) anyways about a month ago I started having a new pain right below the elbow, my left arm (the one I broke) is significantly bigger than my right arm (right arm is dominant) my physical therapist thinks that my muscles shifted. I see my surgeon again next week and I'm hoping it's not something serious.
Fractured my proximal humerus 11 days ago. I have somewhat control the pain except at times when the upper arm moves. My doctor says he’ll put a plate in if I would like but has not really encouraged it. I am very active typically. Trying to decide whether to go ahead with the surgery after suffering through this for 11 days
@@pagesilvia1617 I would not get the surgery unless absolutely needed, my surgeon said it was up to me and I said okay let's do it, he persuaded me into getting by saying if you get the surgery you don't have to wear the sling no more which is why I did. I broke my left humerus back in December of last year at work (spiral mid shaft fracture) and had surgery on it a week later, fast forward to August of this year and I had to get another surgery because I had a very serious life threatening bone infection, the bacteria was called pseudomonas aeruginosa. I had surgery on August the 26th to get the 10 screws and plate removed. There is no more pain in my arm now. After surgery I was on a PICC line for about 3 weeks taking cefepime every 8 hrs. Luckily the bacteria was never in my blood stream, I never got sick either but keep in mind I am a healthy 29 yr old Male. My arm is normal again. Remember if you get surgery there is a risk of infection take care brother
@@shanealdridge8893 Thanks for the reply. You really had a tough post op complication. I am going to go with the non-surgical treatment. Hoping rehab is possible soon. The pain at times is still excruciating.
This is exactly what I'm going through right now I had surgery on the 8th and I'm going to physical therapy and I have radial nerve palsy at the moment so thank you for making this video so I understand it a whole lot better
Hi, can you already move your arm? Do you have any after effects. I would really appreciate to know because I am really stressed right now since I’m just 13.
at six weeks are you still in a cast? if so when are you expected to have you cast removed. im 31 days since the injury (4wks 3 days) and just like you said im able to lift my elbow, not for long and i feel tension when i do. i seldom sleep and walk the house w/o my sling..
I was never in a cast , just a sling and a removable brace around my upper arm , I don’t need brace any more after 8 weeks and I only use the sling when bi go for walks , shoulder is stiff , and elbow, limited movement
@@2006ladylala I was in a cast for 4 weeks 5 days. i went in for my appointment and they took the cast off. elbow is stiff as f$@k smh. shoulder seems ok, but then again i havent lifted my hand above my head in 5 weeks. doc gave me some range of motion activities to do for the elbow stiffness and shoulder. my xray looked the same as the first day i fractured it, but he zoomed in and pointed to what supposed to be the formation of cartilage just outside the fracture . i supposed to wear a sarmiento brace but it didnt come in yet. next appointment is in 3 weeks. he mentioned atleast 3months for bone to heal
I had humeral shaft fracture with my radial nerve injured 5 months ago, the doctor sended me home with a Sarmiento brace + sling . The first 5 weeks was a nightmare bc the pain didn’t stop ( I didn’t take painkillers) had to sleep in a chair for almost 2 months, didn’t have any motion on my whole arm for 2 months as well but thank god after the third month I got the sling removed and started the therapy then I got removed the Sarmiento brace and just were using a wrist supporter till this week my orthopedic specialist said my bone is healing properly and getting more movement so I don’t have to go anymore and I’m able to start working out, play golf etc. Still have to get more strength on my wrist and fingers but I’m grateful for how is my recovery going. For those who are struggling please have patience and remember try to recover that motion everyday no matter how painfully and uncomfortable feels (believe me I know how it feels).
Going to be week3 since I broke my right humerus close to my shoulder. It’s healing nicely, no surgery. Go nearly every week for X-ray recheck. Physical therapy will follow
I'm at 2 weeks in a Solmiento brace, and I'm not real confident this is working. Clean break, but I can feel the bones in there...arm below the elbow is very wobbly. Dr appointment tomorrow and I need to know what is normal here.
Hi … my mom broke humerous shaft ,same ,near shoulder . She is overseas. They gave her splint for her lower arm !!!though, nothing for upper arm, and they told her weekly X-ray checks. I would like to know name/kind of splint they gave you ?
Broke my midhumerus falling off a 3 ft wall. Had a rod placed from shoulder to elbow. You're not kidding, doc. I've never broken a bone; it's the most painful thing I have ever gone through. 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Six weeks into serious supracondylar humerous fracture with radial nerve palsy. Feeling better knowing that function from my wrist to my fingertips will eventually return. Incredibly painful condition. Glad that it's temporary
I'm currently living abroad and while I'm sure the surgeon did a good job, there was a language barrier preventing me from getting this kind of information from my doctor/surgeon. Hearing that radial nerve damage affecting mobility in the wrist is quite common in this type of injury is such a relief to hear. Thanks a lot for the video!
Awesome thorough video, I had no idea my break would be such a complex thing. I'm staying optimistic despite the fact I have a nonunion fracture and need more surgery.
Awesome! Extremely well communicated advice. Joshua Richards has a professional and factual delivery that is so re-assuring to those that have multiple arm/elbow fractures. I have recently had both elbows fractured and displaced and replaced with implants. I am still protective of my left arm that I tend to cradle and nurse it. What I should be doing is getting that movement happening and putting aside my paranoia of injuring it again. Excellent advice and no nonsense delivery from Joshua - Many Thanks. My confidence is boosted!
I broke my humerus and the pain was worse than child birth same with the recovery but with physical therapy it was all good and i actually had gained more range of motion than my therapist thought i would
how long ago was it ? and how long did it take you to recover ? i’m currently in a splint from a humerus break in a car accident as well .. only on my 2nd week tho just looking for comfort and answers.
Broke mine 13 years ago. Luckily it was a clean break and no nerve damage. I was in a sling 2 week cast another few. After the surgery a month later I was back to work. Very painful experience. I would not bare the pain without oxytocin. Now I can reach part of my back that I wasn’t able to before.
Dealing with a fractured Humerus from 2 weeks ago as well, also arm wrestling. Can't lie, it's been mentally stressful but hearing the reassurance in this video makes me a bunch more hopeful for the future.
@@shubhamkgupta4756 it's just that time of the year I guess 🤣 everyone's breaking this same bone. I'm doing a little better, got an appointment tomorrow to see if I'm getting surgery. The stress of not moving it is the main thing slowing me down but it'll get better soon
@@boycircuit8006 I got surgery on 19th Aug. Had pain for 3 to 4 days but pain killers came in handy, other than that I have almost full arm movement. I started to do my research after I broke my arm falling out of bed. Yes, I fell out of bed onto my left arm breaking my humerus in a proximal humerus fashion. It still hurts. That being said, I wish the surgeon I had seen about 10 days ago had said surgery was needed so I could have restored more movement faster. The last thing I want to lose is mobility and flexibility.
My03Tundra depends on how the fracture looks like . My humerus crack right in the middle leaving me with a gap between bones . No surgery needed. I was able to heal . It takes longer . Is more painful but you don’t have to worry about the risk of damaging the nerve or having metals in your arm. Good luck
Alex Delatorre I saw my ortho surgeon today. I’m scheduled for surgery next week. The arm isn’t staying in alignment and healing like it should, causing me a lot of pain and lost sleep. It’s my first orthopedic surgery where I’d have potentially permanent hardware put in place.
I snapped my arm in two, in the middle of the left humerus. Playing games with a controller that has vibration function helped me feel pain in my numb spot after 2 and a half weeks after surgery. I think pain is better than nothing at all. It was a bad break I'm lucky to alive.
Thank you Dr Richards. You just explained so much that they did not at the hospital. I have my surgery on my left arm tomorrow morning and you have eased my mind about choosing the surgery over the conservative way. Being a type 1 diabetic for 25 years I don't think I should try the conservative way. So thank you.
He explains this very well. I have been going through hell. I slipped and fell on a wet patio with leaves and algae on October 29th, 2020. I got a clean break, mid shaft humerus fracture. The pain is unbearable! I’ve never had a broken bone.
I was given conservative management having suffered a complex butterfly fracture. Almost three weeks of severe pain until the follow up X-ray which showed increased damage. I can’t express how much better I feel now that I’ve had a pin inserted through the bone. Only 4 days post op, still in pain, but I’d recommend the plate/pin…… it’s a nasty injury!
Broke my humerus 5 days ago and got surgery the following day. It was painful as hell, but thanks to the meds that kept it asleep 90% of the time since surgery. Not sure whether it's too soon to tell, but I am starting to get better movement of my hand with the elbow/biceps being the stiffest at the moment. Internal bleeding from the injury left my arm with some dark marks. But I think I might have an earlier than expected recovery
My 8 yr old just broke his right at the bottom of the bone at the top of the arm right at the end by the elbow, it went to the opposite side so his bone looked twisted and his nerves stretched. He had surgery and 2 pins put in He didn't scream or cry and he can't cross his fingers or do a thumbs up yet he's got nerve damage hopefully it heals, it's been 2 weeks still nothing. The ER left his arm hanging for 2 hours before giving his arm any stability. I took him to children's which said they shouldn't of allowed his arm to hang that way his elbow was in the front of the arm. He flipped over his handle bars that's how the injury happened, the Drs said it's a very severe injury. He's been so positive throughout this entire ordeal, I'm in aww of him. The fact he didn't cry or scream ever, and I kept waiting for it and it never came, they said he was in shock. He walked home with his after it happened came in calm like I broke it ik it's broke, I freaked out and I tried not to but seeing your child that way is unbelievable.
My humerus was fractured 2 weeks ago while I was playing a frndly arm wrestling match with my frnd. Went to hospital, took x ray and they said that my humerus was fractured. It was an oblique fracture. Fortunately, my radial nerve did not damage and I didn’t get wrist drop.I can freely move my wrist. Doc said that I should undergo surgery since my bone union rate without surgery was 20% lol. I undergone surgery at night the same day I broke my arm, fixed a titanium plate with 8 screws. Actually I did not experience much pain after the fracture before surgery. Idk why, maybe I have more muscle mass or i am fat lol. I can sleep easily without any pain (didn’t take any painkillers) But I am worried bcoz I can’t do my work properly and idk when I can go to the gym again. As am 16 now,my doc said that it may take 1-3 months for healing and currently am wearing a sling for maintaining proper position. I did not experience any post surgery pain. After surgery, I feel much better than pre-surgery. Going to undergo physiotherapy after a week. I went end-over-end in a cycling accident recently. The physician recommended surgery to heal quicker. I'm glad that I went with it. The mobility I have after 6 weeks is impressive. Very little pain (just from the soreness of physical therapy) to keep the tissue flexible. I'll heal up with full mobility within a year. The scar I can live with. It's part of the process.
Ambient Infinite Video AIV I also had an accident on 2 wheels, I’m 5 weeks post surgery and also very impressed at how good it already feels. I’ve had no pain for a while now still can’t put my arm full straight working on that. I was a little bummed how long my incision was starts about 4 inches below my shoulder, goes all the way just passed my elbow
nishi sohliya the arm is great. I was racing my motorcycles only 5 weeks post surgery. Only issues I’ve had was the scar tissue will swell up if irritated
Broke my humerus doing arm wrestling. Never again will I do anything again of which I have no idea of how to do. Went through the whole wrist drop, shoulder lock, elbow lock. It was hell. Thankgod it has gotten better now. Can do heavy lifting but it still hurts a bit when doing bench presses.
Did you get surgery? I did the same thing 4 days ago. It's so painful. Arm wrestling. Lower humerus spiral fracture. How long before you could lift again?
Mine was on the upper side but because it was spiral, the fracture was longish. It was painful because I couldn't get the surgery done for 3 days. Even after that the recovery was slow. For younger people the recovery is faster. I was 31 at that time, my arm still hurts at different angles even after 4 years. I started going back to the gym after 1 year of the accident. I would advise you to take up running or leg exercises at 6 months or earlier if you feel like it and if your doctor doesn't have any objection.
@@Justafreesheep My wrist drop terrified me the most. It took 6 months to get it back to working again properly. When I started lifting again, my arm was very weak, I couldn't even lift a 3 kg dumbell. Benchpress seemed impossible. It still hurts when I bench press but now I've become strong again. Can do reps at 60ks (including the bar) but need a spotter cause some angles still feel uncomfortable. My aim is to bring my bench to 100kg by the end of 2022. Just because I wasn't exercising and got lazy, my other lifts also went down at the same proportion as my bench so I think if you can exercise your legs, then keep exercising.
@@Justafreesheep Stay strong and don't get depressed. Hit me up here if you need support. Oh and another thing, start your shoulder moving as soon as it is possible. I had an elbow lock but then later my shoulder locked aswell. Shoulder lock would be worse than your actual injury. Ask your doctor for shoulder exercises and go to a physio therapist regularly. I still haven't gotten full mobility of my shoulder at extreme angles, even though I went to a physio therapist for some time. I quit going because my main focus was the wrist. As soon as it moved a tiny bit, I quit going to the therapist and started exercising my wrist myself.
I'm facing this injury right now and I feel miserable. This video gave me a bit of hope because I took the surgery, so acording to this it will heal faster. Thank you very much for making this content, really helps a lot. Btw if someone know how to SLEEP pls tell me I can't take it anymore 😢
I'm also facing humerus fracture right now. Doctors told me i don't need operation so I'm healing at home rn. There is no other way to sleep but on your back. Only 2 week passed for me, im going to need 2 months of bone healing and after that a lot of time of physical therapy... It sucks.
@steffkepn2 I'm having a rough time trying to stay the fuck still. I'm also 2 weeks since operation, 3 since de fracture itself. I'm glad to say that I feel a lot better now. Hope you'r doing well. Best of luck!

Be careful choosing surgery, I had to get a second surgery on my left arm to remove the metal implants because I had a bone infection. The bacteria was called pseudomonas Aeruginas and it has a high mortality rate, luckily it was never in my bloodstream. Remember with any surgery there is always chance of infection
How long after surgery did the infection set in ? I broke my humerus neck in 3 parts after a motorbike accident, so surgery was necessary, I have a plate and nine pins, now two and half months post op, I’m swimming very slowly, massage and exercising my arm daily ,but who knows and how do you know if an infection sets in?
@@deemuzik5582 I'm not really sure but I want to say the infection started right after my 1st surgery but I couldn't tell that I had it because there were no signs of infection, just arm pain which we thought was from the metal implants.. the infection didn't flare up until literally months later (like 8 months) after surgery
Hi! 10 weeks ago I suffered a humerus fracture, right in the middle. 8 weeks I had the right arm in a cast. After my cast was removed 2 weeks ago, I started doing physiotherapy and now I can use my arm almost normal. I can even raise my arm just above my head. I think what this guy says about the humerus fracture, is valid for older people. PS I am 37 years old, I do not smoke and I like to have a healthy lifestyle.
Hey. I had orif surgery with a rod and screws because i displaced bone. I can barely move my shoulder. Doing PT too. Does it get better? I've heard that you can permanently lose ROM from humerus fractures.😢
@@Anna1aura Hi! It depends on your age and how healthy you are. If you do physiotherapy exercises, recovery can be done faster and more efficiently after a bone fracture.
Like 2 or 3 I fell down a flight of stairs and I have a small fracture on humerus and I'm so glad its healing perfectly and fast and I probably won't need surgery according to my bone doctor
Broke it towards the bottom didn’t have insurance couldn’t move my arm below my elbow. Doctor said surgery cus it was like 50 degrees or so off but I didn’t want it. Basically till I got approved for Medicaid (1 and half months) in a splint it healed. Got Medicaid finally put in a plastic cast thingy wore it about month. Yes my elbow was heck stiff but took it off eventually and it seems all back to normal / functional. I never went back for a checkup because I missed my ride lol. But reason I’m writing this is don’t be afraid I did everything wrong and it still turned out good (:
How much time it took for normal elbow functioning. I broke my humerus mid shaft before like 5 weeks ago n now m continuing exercises for normal elbow functioning but still I can't extend it completely it hurts awfully when I try to 😃😃
Fractured my right humerus with into two pieces, and also had a spiral fracture in the upper half which went almost all the way to the shoulder. This happened to me exactly 10 days ago and I underwent surgery 6 days ago. 266mm of titanium plating with 16 screws, which required a cut about 35cm up the back of my arm (4.5 hours). I was very nervous before surgery and my main concern was radial nerve palsy. I am so grateful to say that my surgery went very well and I am feeling much better, with complete feeling in my wrists, hands and fingers. I understand I am incredibly lucky, but I want to share this just to let people who are going through this injury know that the surgery can go well. Obviously it was a very painful first week, but I also want to share that the pain is getting less and less each day. I am almost feeling back to normal. Sending strength and support to anyone going through this, I hope (if you undergo surgery) it goes great and you recover well!
I have a distal humerus fracture and shattered elbow. They gave me plates and screws. 6hr surgery. It's been 4 days. I play guitar and skateboard. I'm super depressed just lying down resting not being able to do much. Hang in there I'm praying for you please pray for me as well.
I broke my shoulder just under the joint (I’m 12) And the nurse said she’s never seen a break this bad in somebody so young, I didn’t cry when it happened, just stared at the ceiling in lots of pain just not expressing it
@@amxjxn859 I fell MTB, went 23 kmh into the pit dug into ground at the single track, flew away like from catapult, fell on to my stretched left arm with full force. Just look Tory Belleci crash at Mythbusters, he was VERY lucky, i wasn't. He lost speed gradually, bicycle fell over him, mine stopped instantly in the pit! If he had humerus injury he would be written off the series! Initial pain, it was not too bad, tooth pain can be worse and last longer, but recovery in the case of this injury is worst! It can really be destructive, mentally and physically, entire deltoid muscle wastes away, recovering is painful and SLOW, it is disabling, it can ruin someones career, make him lose job and etc. I ride bicycles 40 years and after this injury i was really afraid to ride again. It was irrational fear but it was and still is there a bit..PS: Good thing: i was on bicycle within 5 weeks :) Bad thing: My shoulder froze
@@damusmust616 i got my surgery done two months ago, I can move my arm almost normally now. my elbow went stiff so had to work on it for three weeks with physiotherapy to get my arm to straighten and bend, also my muscles were completely stiff, my biceps is still somewhat stiff, also there is still lingering pain with my triceps when straightening my arm.
Had mid-shaft fracture from serious skiing accident two years ago. Surgery itself was walk in the park. Hard part was rehabilitating my shoulder, that got stiff and rehabilitating nervus radialis, that got irritated during surgery. It took almost five months for my wrist and fingers to start working again, while I was wearing special custom-made plastic brace on it. And almost one year to fully recover. I had amost no pain whatsoever in my arm. But the pain from stiff shoulder was nightmarish.
Completely broke my humerus and I healed with out surgery and 5 months latter I’m back at the gym with no pain and stronger then ever . If you guys have any questions let me know I can help !!
I'm 3 weeks out of surgery. Screws and rod will be removed when bone is healed. However shoulder mobility is horrible. Does this get better? I'm doing PT
I cracked mine few days ago and it fucking hurts I'm sure it might be worse for you honestly I hate getting hurt cuz I hate PAIN and it takes fucking time to heal.
I was out for 7 Months but my Specialist told Me I had a serious break & after a couple follow up’s with Him He suggested Ultrasonic Bone Therapy & that sped things up but I was sore for a couple weeks. Another thing was I couldn’t Shower for a while & that bothered Me
i fractured my humerus early this summer. had ORIF surgery 2 1/2 weeks later. surgery wasn't that painful. had nerve block to help with that. (coming off nerve block definitely sucked but wasn't bad after that. stopped oxycodone after a very short period. It's now been 5 weeks after surgery. I had quite a splintered fracture BTW. I am doing PT. it's going well. not every day is great, but i am making much progress on range of motion. Sleep has sucked the whole time. I have a recliner but i never was able to truly spend the whole night in it. what surprised me is the lack of strength in my wrist and hand. (this injury was NOT my dominant hand) I highly recommend surgery. i can't imagine where i would be in my recovery without. hope this helps. i'm an active 60 year old woman
Broke my humerus mid shaft , just over 3 weeks ago, the first 10 days was uncomfortable, sleeping sat up .all the swelling gone in 2 weeks, I have been constantly squeezing a rubber ball. No meds apart from a few ibuprofen in first few weeks, only because my shoulder ached
Did you go through surgery? How far along are you since the injury and how do you feel. I fractured mine a week ago and they put me in a half cast and sling. I dont need pain killers.
Broke my humerus bone into two parts surgery took place 2days after the accident because of swelling got fitted with a titanium plate and 7 screws , post surgery pain was really something I would never like to experience again but now ive got my stiches removed and its a lot better now
my mom just fell and rotated her arm all the way around (elbow in the front) they're saying it's the humerus that broke and she'll need surgery to fix it but she's high risk for unrelated reasons (heart failure) and they realllyyyy don't know what to do with her. like..... her arm is serious BROKEN and it NEEDS surgery but she's too sick for it. I don't even know how to process this so i'm just researching everything like crazy. damn.
I broke my left humerus bone on a motorcycle accident, then I had a surgery, they put a plate inside my bone for them to attached. And now, One week later after the operation, I can now move my arm and my shoulder up and down. for me it was a fast recovery, I can effrotlessly move my arm in just 1week, so I may say it was a good improvement, Hopefully it will fully healed for atleast less than 2 mos.. so that I can go back to work.
It will take around 3 months when your arm will be able to operate autonomous without a bandage. At least I had it like this. Btw I was able to work and play on my PC 2 weeks after the surgery, even though it hurt a little. Good luck.
We are same condition . had motorcycle accident. Got fractured my left arm. I need that kind of surgery but suddenly i cant even afford. Is anyone can suggest any treatment without surgery.

In a sling, I sleep propped up allowing my arm to rest in sling so gravity continues to keep bone in place & healing continues. Ive used Arnicare gel topically from day 2, to help with reducing pain, swelling & bruising ( Amazon, rite aid & cvs have it) . I also take calcium, magnesium & vitamin D3 to strengthen the bone / healing. If I need pain relief I take 600mgs Ibuprofen but never on an empty stomach. Also use ice packs for first couple of weeks. I had to go through 2 surgery's with my broken humerus, 1st surgery last yr dec 29th with plate & 10 screws, fast forward to august and had to get another one because I had a serious bone infection called osteomyelitis with the bacteria pseudomonas aeruginosa which has a mortality rate of %18- %62. It took months to notice I had something wrong with my arm, noticed one part of the insion was red, swollen, and tender. I had to get the metal taken out on aug 26th, stayed for 6 days and was discharged with a PICC line in my arm taking cefepime every 8 hrs for a few weeks, then got switched to oral antibotics after that was over with. Now I am pain free but still have those 10 screw holes which are considered weak points so still have to be careful. The bacteria I had is mostly found in hospitals. The scary part is that the infectious disease person told me that it could come back, hopefully not. The bacteria was never in my bloodstream, just in my bone. I was never sick from the infection either, I am 29 and healthy too so that might be why. I hope noone else has to go through all that.
I recently went thru a humerus fracture surgery in my left arm. My bones were bit too misplaced thus such actions needed to be taken. Sleeping was the most painful part. Now it's been 4 days since surgery. And 3.5 weeks left to go back to work

I fractured my shoulder on Saturday 15 July 2023 after a fall and I went to the hospital had a x ray and told my shoulder was fractured the doctor at the hospital spoke to the orthopaedic Specialist and they said that I didn't need to have surgery and they told the nurse to just put my arm in a wrist sling and I could go home. I was told that I would have a orthopaedic Specialist appointment in a weeks time. I was told I could take the sling off to have a shower and to change my clothes when I needed to and just put the wrist sling back on after I was finished getting dressed. I have a lot of difficulty taking my top off to get changed and it is difficult to put the sling back on. I always worry that I haven't put the wrist sling back on properly. For people, who are facing difficulty lying down to sleep after plaster.... Fractured my left humerus.. First two weeks was the worst... I couldnt sleep at the first night because of pain... The next day I consulted with the doctor only to know how i could lie down to sleep... So, he told me to gently lie down on my right shoulder from sitting position.... And then ease into my back keeping the hand on a pillow for support... The pain while laying in this fashion somewhat reduced to a good extent...
I broke near my shoulder 😪 Edit: I fractured my humerus and I got an immobilizer and a sling. 😃👍I can move my shoulder and lift my forearm but any other movements would cause excruciating pain.

@@rikiellia yes I underwent internal fixation surgery. My doctor advised me to as he feared that due to the nature and location of the fracture, my injury will not heal properly and make my arm slightly bent in the long term, hence advising for a metal bracket to make it straight again. Surgery was a major success and if you're thinking of it, go for it. Currently I'm close to 2 months into physio and arm has full range, albeit with lesser strength than usual. Still working on that.
@@brocks4438 yeah I just had fixation and had 2 plates in my arm now . Only because of the bone not aligned as well . Now I’m recovery doing physio and stretching out the arm now ! Are you planning on taking the hardware out in the future ?
@@rikiellia nope, my doctor advised against removal. Usually these plates and screws will stay in patients for life and they would only remove it if absolutely necessary. There is certainly a possibility of a risk of complications if you were to remove those implants again, as the arm has a lot of nerves and muscles. I would recommend you to keep them in unless it really hinders your daily life

Doctor said I would be fine in a couple months .3 different physiotherapy places all said they can't help me , some days my arm is so stiff I hear it making snapping sounds as I move it ...The pain is extreme .1 being the least 10 being the most , everyday I'm at 8 ... Sometimes it hurts so bad I feel like I'm going to pass out ...the stiffness has spread to my neck and shoulder , and my arm pit ....Been. Ruff road .. I keep hoping and trying to get the function back , but nothing works ...
I think your take is wrong. These fractures become tolerable in a brace faster than they do post surgery. Fractures in a brace heal faster, less complications, and if exercised correctly there is no stiffness by two months.
I'm four weeks into my fracture with conservative treatment (a brace), still in pain, and using a Vicodin & ice pack regimen to rein in the soreness. My hand and arm are loosening up -- no more rash or discoloration, and less stiffness. My fear is that I will never again full mobility in my left arm. Fortunately, I'm right-side dominant, but I still hope beyond hope for a full recovery. I still can't lift my arm up more than a few inches, which has me dispirited. I'm pushing 50 and is the first time I've broken a bone (in my body or anybody else's).
I'm 13 and I can fully function my arm at 6 weeks. I took me about 2 weeks to make my arm functional. The doctors said I might need surgery and I hope I don't need surgery.

My recovery experience: Broke my humorous and needed ORIF surgery. After surgery I was in a good amount of pain for about 10 days. For two weeks I could only sleep in a reclining chair. Not sure what it is about a chair but nothing else came close. Started PT about a month after surgery 3x a week. My range of motion was terrible! I could only lift my arm about 20 degrees in any direction from my side. Event the PT guy was amazed at how little range I had. Equally remarkable was how much muscle I lost in my deltoid. It was about a quarter of the size as my good arm. Also they reattached my bicep in a different spot (maybe the doc can explain why) so that felt a bit weird and my bicep was very sore. The PT person thought I might have ruptured it (turns out I didn’t). After about 5 month of pt I regained a little strength and about 150 deg range ( 180 would be my arm directly over my head :)). I also found that doing PT in a pool on my own was awesome! The cold water helped with the pain and the buoyancy of water and its slight resistance was perfect. About 8 months after surgery was the first time I had moments I didn’t notice my arm was sore. I did t do much physical therapy after my five months on my own…..I just needed a break. About a yr post surgery I have 95% range back and definitely not as much soreness. 1yr and 2 months I finally felt like I could start lifting a good amount of weight to start to get the muscle back I had before. I think once I do everything will end up being 95-100% normal. I’m sharing my experience because this injury is super slow to recover from and at times i got a little depressed thinking I may never be able to do certain things again or that my arm would never feel the same. Believe me it gets better but u need to do the work! This surgery definitely takes a year to recover from I’d think. I’m 51 so likely a younger person might fair better but I was in really good shape at the time of my injury. For me I’m thinking 1.5 yrs and for some it might be two yrs…..but it does get better!
@@billybob-lu5jp sorry to hear. I’m definitely not a pain meds guy but definitely had to use them for a couple of weeks. If u don’t have a reclining chair I’d def get one, it helps a lot with the pain and is the only way u can sleep. Also highly recommend starting PT sooner or later but your doc should let u know when u are ready. Some PT places are better than others and some therapists as well so don’t be afraid to switch if you’re not satisfied. Also early on doing your own PT is great. The buoyancy of water let’s u do a lot of range of motion without so much pain and the coldness of the water also helps the pain. It’s a slow recovery but it will get better. Good luck!
I've been miserable and scared for a week. Because of covid I don't want to go to hospital and I don't have money or insutance... I feel a little better knowing my suffering might be expected. I still am scared of how much it hurts.
I had a holstein lewis fracture on my left humerus bone, it was closer to the elbow, i broke it whilst arm wrestling, i felt non-constant pain so the pain only really hit me when i was outside cuz my movement was causing the bones to move, it’s very manageable recovering without surgery, i decided to not do a surgery for the simple fact that i didn’t want to risk nerve damage even tho it was temporary, first 2 days are usually the peak hour of pain, then you are just left with a broken arm, by 4th week if you’re wearing a stabiliser they will unscrew it so that you can extend your Range of motion by 30 degrees in my case, by 6th week they took the whole stabiliser off and told me now to practice exercises, it’s a tough injury especially in my case i had planned to do many things before the injury and now i had to take on the world with one arm ahaha, but trust me it’s only gon get better day by day is an improvement, doctors usually underestimate the human determination. wishing all a quick recovery
Im almost 8th week and had functional braces. Pain has subsided compared to first weeks, yet im on verge of despair if its gonna reconnect. Is there Any signs i need to look for if it’s healing well, just to keep the hope alive :(
thank you mine is an upper fracture ......hoping bone will heal ....badly bruised i have it in a sling do simple exercises to move lower arm and elbow. if i take my arm out of the sling has a tendency to swell .......it is difficult to sleep....have taken painkillers but not sure if the work! video is both helpful and a little scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I broke mine in arm wrestling and the bone shattered in 5 different places , you should see the other guy he fainted when he saw my hand go limp , it was hilarious and my hand didn't even pain as i had no hand connected at the time so yeah . Dont arm wrestle kids or know your limits . I got 9 screws and this occurred like 20 days ago . Luckily no nerve damage and no damage to my elbow.
I fractured my mid shaft and had a surgery just under 11 weeks ago, my shoulder is still stiff and my arm is weak but I'm almost there :) Thinking about going on my first run since the break tomorrow :)
I fractured my proximal humerus. The shaft detached from the humerus head. I did not require surgery because the fracture did not displace much. At 4 weeks I started pendulum exercises and began using the sling with less frequency. By week 6 I was off the sling completely thanks to early physical therapy. I'm on week 8 now and I can raise my hand 90 degrees, some difficulty, but not incredible. I can brush my teeth, wash my face, reach things close to me, and I can put my hands on my head if a robbery were to take place lol. My recovery, according to my orthopedist and therapist, is faster than usual. I attribute it to being very religious about my therapy, but also focusing on my diet, specifically on nutrient intake that is supposed to help with tissue regeneration and bone healing. Look into vitamin K, calcium, and magnesium rich foods or supplements. Also Vitamin D is very important. Eat a good amount of protein, and keep active as it stimulates your body to regenerate and grow. Work out your non-injured site as it will help you maintain muscle on your injured arm.

@@tomservo3401 You don't need prescriptions for most pain killers. They're available OTC. When this happened to me 7 years ago, the first nights were nearly sleepless. What eased the pain at night was keeping the arm in elevated position, but still horizontal, parallel to the body. So roll up a blanket or additional pillow, put it under your arm, and see if it helps. You'll have another X-Ray in a few weeks and once the bone is healed you can start a long lasting physio. The physio can take months so be prepared for that. Be brave! You'll be fine. P.S. The support for your arm may be like that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hsauKSU_Qww.html
