This was a cool video! I love to watch and analyze rolls. I will definitely watch videos like that. - I record and post all of my rolls and it has helped me immensely. (People at the gym says it really helps them as well.) Things that take weeks or months to notice, I am able to recognize after one viewing.
Yeah, I need to get better at recording my rolls - and analyzing....Was doing it for a while then stopped...Iv'e watched a few of your rolls on your channel! Keep up the good work.
I’m 46. Wife, kids, career and very out of shape at 320 pounds. Six weeks into BJJ and having a blast even while just scratching the surface. Last night was the first class I wasn’t dead tired after rolling so it’s getting better a bit at a time and I’m down ten pounds.
Awesome! Keep it slow... I’ve found that sometimes my heart and mind are all iin but my body didn’t get the memo...😂😂😂 thanks for hanging out and commenting! Appreciate the support!
my first class is in two days, i'm pretty nervous cause i'm kind of an awkward guy. but i'm pretty sure i'll feel better after class!! the waiting part is what kills me
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting! You may want to check ou this video as well (since you’re first class is coming up) it’s older but the imfo is still relevant for your first day! Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jyry0IXicis.html
Dead on accurate, I don't think any of us who have done BJJ for a bit haven't experienced the things you noted, especially the mat burns, lol. I do 2 classes a week, unless that pesky "work" gets in the way. One thing I did to supplement my training was to buy the mats like you have, I started with 4 of them and now have 8 which all connect with velcro. I clear space in my basement and have invited other people who want to get extra training over to drill and roll. When I'm done, I clean the mats and make sure the furniture is back in place (wife's rules, lol). I now have 10 people who are on my group text list and I generally train both Saturday and Sunday most weeks, along with an additional day during the week. This has helped me a lot. All the people I invite have to understand we all have jobs and families, so it is a rule, "fast to the position, slow to the submission", anything to aggressive will not get you invited back. When you get more reps it definitely helps. Also, when you get to try stuff while rolling more often, you eventually start being able to execute with a resisting partner. A motto we have is "just try things" while rolling. Worst thing that can happen is you mess it up and end up in a bad position or being submitted, so you learn from it.
Great comment! I’m hoping to move in a couple of years and would love to buy a house with a finished basement or separate space for some BJJ...not to start my own school but to just practice with some like minded friends (like you’ve done) ...my kids roll too so it would be nice to have some space to practice...appreciate the comment! Hope you consider subscribing. 🙏👊
I started bjj at 43. Got hurt. Took a month off. Got hurt again. Now my wife is giving me a hard time bc I missed work due to an ankle injury. It's getting harder and harder to show up to class. I almost wanna throw in the towel, but I feel so good after a good class. But the more I learn, the more I learn how much I have to learn.
That’s tough man...especially when the wife is concerned (rightfully so)...can you find another, less aggressive school or choose your rolling partner...maybe ones with the same goals as you?
My first class in about a hour I’m excited, nervous I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting to try jiu-jitsu like 3 months ago I got inspired to do it by watching the ufc.I’ve been boxing since I was 12 I’m 14 now.
I'm nearly 65 and start in the evening with me first lesson BJJ in The Hague. Y're instructions give me hope and the trust that I will survive the first day. So again thanks for the tips!!
@@midlifebjj Went super well, got submitted a few times but everyone in the school said swallow your ego and tap early so you don't get hurt while training, especially being so new to the sport
You’re getting great advice! My motto: tap early, tap often (which means you’re trying new things and failing…but learning), roll as often as life will allow. Congrats on taking the first step that many shy away from!
@@Jay-mcr How are you holding up? Did you get really sore after your first few days of rolling? How's that cardio? I took a few weeks off and went back tonight...got an 8 minute roll in but I was struggling!
@@midlifebjj I've been 3-4 times now. Did a sparring session the other night, that was good but it tired me out big time ! I can't get back there this week, I've damaged my lower back lifting flags! Off work and in bed...back next week hopefully mate.
@@Jay-mcr 3 to 4 times a week is awesome! You're going to learn fast on that schedule! Take care of that back...I'm thinking of going to this new Cryotherapy place near my academy. @@thadood4373 oh thanks for asking, uhmm it actually was great i was training with only adults but they where very nice. Ive trained twice now we focused on leg locks and chokes. I have signed up and i am buying a Gi tommorow.
For the first week, I literally tied my belt like a giant shoe lace. I figured it out eventually, mostly because people kept yanking it from one side and it would come undone.
B.I.G. Brandon thanks 🙏- will certainly check them out - always looking for a good Gi without breaking the bank. Thanks for sharing! If you haven’t- please consider subscribing! Trying to hit 1000 subs in 2020. Thanks again!
Thanks for the vid I'm 50 and am going to start in the next week r so. Never trained bjj only tae kwon do so i know it's very different. But your vid helped me to decide that I'm all in thanx bro
Hey I went to my first class yesterday under Wade Rome and it was amazing. I'm very exited and wish I started this 20 yrs ago. Thanks again for your videos they're great!
Good video. In search of a gym and watching videos in the process. Very informative. I never subscribed to people on RU-vid. You can see I don’t even have a profile pic because I’ve never even signed into RU-vid but you definitely deserve a subscribe. Thank you
something inside me is telling me to start with bjj but i just can't do it. i have fear of failure, what if i can't do some drill, choke ... i don't want to go alone im afraid of unknown people what should i do :/
You only have 2 choices: 1) Try it or 2) Don’t try it...you will fail if you try...you’ll fail over and over...BUT you will start to get better...and you’ll start noticing less failures..because you’re not really failing....you’re continually learning..if you don’t go, you won’t fail at BJJ because you can’t fail at something if you don’t even try. If you choose not to try, you’ll miss out on aches and pains, you’ll miss out on an incredible art, great friends and relationships....give it a try... you’ve nothing to lose, my friend! Appreciate the comment! Let me know what you decide.
@@midlifebjj i decided, i will go 😁 as you said i don't have nothing to lose, I think my bigger fear are people cuz i don't know anybody. I'm introvert and that's my problem i think bjj will help me to raise my confidence, skills to talk with people, my health etc ... Sorry if my English is bad
Thank you. Just keep showing up! Keep us posted on your journey. Keep safe, tap fast, tap often, beware of meatheads out to hurt you. They’re few and far between, but they’re out there. Stay healthy.
I have my first class in a few days and I’m really nervous. I’m a very short guy and a little overweight for my height. I’m really out of shape and I have no endurance for running, so I’m worried about even making it through warm ups. Because of my size and lack of any inherent athletic ability, I don’t expect to ever really be “good” at BJJ, I just want to learn and be better than where I started. I don’t want to embarrass myself either though.
Hay, appreciate your candid comment. Don’t worry about being embarrassed. Seriously. Everyone starts where you are. Even the jacked guys get worked when they first start. Keep going. As much as your body will allow. When your body says rest rest - but get back at it. Have you had the class? Let us know how it went! You got this.
@@midlifebjj I went today and it was great! I made it through the whole class. Only started to not feel so great during the last 2 minutes of class. I'm physically tired, but mentally I feel really good. I can't remember the last time I've sweat that much. It was a really positive environment overall and I had a good talk with the instructor at the end, so I decided to sign up!
Rock on brother! Welcome to the channel…even though I haven’t posted in a while, I read and respond to comments. I will post again. Works got me traveling - I still roll but not as frequently as I used to. Keep us posted on your journey.
i just tried the falling thing where you disperse the impact on your hands and arms and now my hands just hurt haha gotta figure that one out Mabey I'm doing it wrong
I'm probably not the best instructor (just a blue belt) but I at least wanted to share what you might have to do on day 1 so you'd have some idea. Trying to help my boys (and ladies - I have a few on the channel) out so ya'll don't look silly like I did on day 1. 😂😂😂 Thanks for watching and commenting. Hey, it'd be awesome if you'd consider subscribing if you haven't already! Would be great to have you as part of the channel! Are you currently practicing BJJ or thinking of doing BJJ?
Hey man great video. I have a question about getting started. Right now I'm currently finishing out my contract as a Marine but I plan on jumping into jiu jitsu as soon as I get out. I already know jiu jitsu is gonna have a lot of humbling and humiliating experiences but I have great interest in it but in all reality I probably know next to nothing about it. I really have little to no martial arts experience other than the Marine Corps martial arts program. I was only a grey belt (only the 2nd belt up) and it's really nothing compared to jiu jitsu other than a couple techniques that seem relatively related and yes we grappled and had to test and master the techniques in order to earn tan belt, grey etc. But it really isn't anything compared to jiu jitsu. I suppose my question is what's it like to first start out? How would you recommend practicing at home (especially if you have no one to practice with) etc. I know this sounds silly for me to say since I haven't even started yet but I really don't see myself quiting. I lack martial arts experience but I've played physical sports all my life and I have great interest in this. Why do most people fail? I heard it's hard being a white belt learning a lot of moves and was wondering what the first 6 months to a year generally looks like, thank you.
Great question, I’m going to answer this in a video if that’s cool…I think others would want to hear this…plus I can ask others to chime in - in the comment section.
Usually you can change at the school (if I understand your question correctly) - I’ve walked in with Gi pants on and had my top in a bag...just slipped the top on when class started ....does this answer your question? Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thats realy weird.. I'm training for 5 years and I dont know if I've ever experienced mat burn.. I recall something similar when I was training twice a day. Maybe it depends on what mats youre training? I train in Europe so maybe we have mats of diferent material??
Consider yourself lucky! It’s quite painful...could be different mats - not really sure....that is strange though....maybe your technique is better...😂😂 thanks for commenting! Would love to have you as a subscriber (if you haven’t subbed already) Oss!
I'd like to echo this comment... I train in USA (New Jersey) and have been for a few months and have never gotten mat burn. I think it has to do with the type of mat, some RU-vidrs have said it's terrible but neither me nor my training partners have complained about it. Oss...
I know...videos suck 'cause their on YT forever...I get called out on this mistake all the time...I'm trying to get better but...oh well. No reshooting! Thanks for the comment

Is this a sport for a senior citizen with two hip replacements? I’m cycling 30 miles a day but looking for an additional sport once the restriction lift.
Difficult to say because I’m not a doctor. If it were me, I’d give it a try and if I didn’t feel comfortable with the school, I may try 1 or 2 more...schools vary in training and intensity. But if I couldn’t find one with the culture I was looking for, I wouldn’t do it.
I'm a 14 yr old girl who isn't very active... At all but one of my friends really wants me to do this with her and I think that I may really like it what do you think? Should I try it? (Odviously I gotta ask my parents but I was just wondering)
Yep..definitely ask your parents but I think you’ll enjoy it. My daughter is 10 and she loves it. If you have a friend that’s going with you - it may make it easier...take the pressure off since you’ll be going with a friend. If your parents allow it - make sure you do some research on the school. Make sure it’s rated well... that kind of thing. Good luck!
do it! Way better than any of the fake self defense bs out there plus it'll make you tougher while giving you a good workout. It's tough but fun. Plus, if some dude in your highschool gets in your face you can choke him out haha
Cody Pearce about 2.5 years...thanks for watching and commenting! Really appreciate the support....if you haven’t subscribed - please consider doing so! It’s free and I’ll keep trying to bring better content!
We have some high school wrestlers in our school and they love it. That said, while I appreciate your question and support on my channel, I’ve gotta defer to your parents or guardians...do I think you’ll enjoy BJJ, yes! Just my humble opinion! Appreciate your comment! 🙏👊
Make sure you can fit it into your schedule and not get overwhelmed! I'm 14 and keep trying to add more dance, taekwondo, and self defense classes into my schedule 😂
It’s not too late. I’m 45 as well. We have folks walking in at 50 for the first time....to could always try it out. Most places will give you all few free sessions. Let me know what you decide! 🙏👊
I’ve only don’t two classes up to this point but I’m going to give some advice while it is fresh on my mind. I was way too stressed out walking into my first class. Don’t be worried, people will make you feel welcome and you’ll forget that you just met these people. Just submitted a guy for the first time today and it was great. Also, thanks for the advice man.

Brooooo ! Mat burn sucks !!! I eventually toughened my skin with callouses but in the begining it was terrible. And you are so right, it is a marathon, relax and breath !!
Mat burn is the worst but a few subscribers have said they’ve rolled for years and never have gotten mat burn...I’m thinking it might be related to specific mats...
Actually, no... I did live in North Carolina for most of my life but moved to Va about 8 years ago. I went to grad school at UNC Chapel Hill - that’s the reason for the hat plus it’s a college I’ve loved since I was a kid...college basketball runs deep in NC....as you probably know. We’re still neighbors though.... I go to NC often to see family.. welcome to the channel brother... hope you subscribed and keep coming back. Oss!
Im also 44. I have visited a couple of BJJ schools in my city to take a free trial class however I kind of lost motivation due to the fact that it was very exhausting despite I realized I have natural grappling skills. The warm up just killed me, not to mentioned they mixed all belt level's in one class which put me in disadvantage. The teacher dedicated only 5 minutes for technical teaching and the rest of the time was dedicated to matches...I wish I could find a school where I can find more beginners like me and they go little by little 😥 .
Many gyms have different approaches. I really recommend finding a gym that has a beginners or fundamentals class so you can gradually ease your way into it. If you find a Gracie University training center, they have a great beginners program where you learn fundamentals before you do real open sparring.
I want to start learning this for self defense and I'm scared but watching do Jiu-jitsu makes me intrigued and exited but actually doing it sounds so scary...
I’ve rolled at places with no AC…they had roll up garage doors but in mid summer, in the south…rough. Just be careful rolling too crazy if you an old guy like me.
Thanks for the feedback! It’s an older video...kinda...I’ve gotten better - well a little better. My new lens has image stabilization...appreciate your feedback though and your support! 👊🙏
@@midlifebjj Starting the 3rd week! Learning something new everyday! BJJ is definitely challenging but a lot of fun! Just ordered my gi and boxing gloves over the weekend super excited to use them!! 🤙
I started in Nov '22, and i'm 52. My main thing is being old and embarrassed, as if theyre saying who does that old bird think she is, starting this at her age. I've never had a fight in my life, so i dont know how the body works when youre fighting, hence i cant work out how the techniques go, amd i'm dyslexic so i cant learn the techniques properly, so theres embarrassement about that too, it takes me 5 times as long as everyone else to learn. I hardly go because i feel so out of my depth.
Thank you for being candid about your situation. We all have negative “self-talk” that hinders progression and, unfortunately, it’s not limited to just BJJ. You’ve made a tremendous accomplishment by putting on that white belt and stepping into a world you’re completely unfamiliar with. BJJ can be very confusing to understand without the complication of dyslexia. Here’s what I’ll say based on my experience with BJJ: typically when a woman or older person (I’m 48) steps on the mats, I’m impressed. I don’t want to speak for the others at my BJJ school but I think most of the rollers feel the same. If you feel embarrassed and it’s in your head, just get on the mats more…watch BJJ videos in your spare time and focus your video search on the moves/techniques taught at your BJJ school that you didn’t quite understand. Don’t be afraid to ask the instructor to “show the move one more time”…I still ask my instructor this question if I’m lost (which happens a lot). Lastly, make sure the folks at your school are sensitive to your situation. By your comment it seems as though most of the negativity is self induced which is totally common-so I’m sure the people are great! However, if that’s not the case don’t be afraid to try other BJJ schools. Thank you so much for the comment! Keep Rolling! 🙏
I know this might sound strange but as a muslim im actually not allowed to bow to any1 or anything because the bowing move in only performed during the 5 daily prayers meaning only for god. Do u think the bjj place will let me off without bowing?
No..not all all, my friend. Most places I’ve visited don’t require you to bow. It’s just good practice but I’m sure anyone sensible will respect your religious beliefs...
Thank you. I consider to start at 35 and there are only two BJJ schools in town. I'm worried about my sensitive gag reflex, too. Is there a high risk for it to be triggered when starting out?
To train myself not to get Matt burn…I no longer get Matt burn. Socks suck for BJJ…just endure and figure out how to move…that’s what I did and that’s what others do…don’t wear socks!
You’ll be good. From my experience- most BJJ places are welcoming..don’t forget, you can sit and watch class or two before you get on the mats. You can also just go through the warm ups, technique - and not roll until you’re comfortable….its fine and may guys do this..:or you can just jump into the deep end of the pool…they’ll be gentle. You got this.
thanks and I am hard head, so deep end is probably best, I was supposed to go today but I just didn't, I saved myself the car ride and took longer bike ride to get my head fixed. reschedule for this friday tho @@midlifebjj
Gotta go with BJJ... if you’re new to the channel, check out some video links in the description of every video, also: type in Gracie Challenge into RU-vid search bar- you should get some old videos of karate experts + other arts challenging Gracie BJJ students... that should provide better insight than I could ever explain...I’m a BJJ fan although I did practice Karate for a while as a kid - but hey - I grew up in the Karate Kid days - everyone was doing it... hope you subbed brother but whatever your decision is- I wish you well🙏
I’ve got a question for you. I’ve never really Trained BJJ in a formal setting, but I do have some training in HS Wrestling, Boxing & Taekwondo. That being said that was many years ago when I was in the Army. My question is can I affectively train BJJ if I can’t run do to knees and an Ankle injury’s while in the Army. I’ve had a total of 5 knee Surgeries and 1 Foot / Ankle Surgery. I’m a Big Guy 6’3” 350lbs. I’m not a fat Slob, but definitely outta shape. I’m turning 50 in a few months and I really wanna give BJJ a try. I’ve always been intrigued with Combat sports. I was also a Power Lifter and was never a Small guy.
I think you should try...see how it feels. Two important steps: 1) Check with your physician before starting.2) Find a good school that supports you given your age and your injuries. Be up front and let them know...always let your training partner know as well. Let me know what you decide. Hope this helps.🤙🙏
@@midlifebjj Thanks. I spoke with the instructors at the BJJ School near me, it’s a Gracie Barra School and they said they would definitely be able to work around my injuries.
I'm at 20 year old woman (girl? still feel like just a kid tbh), and I am starting my BJJ journey in a month. Super excited! Thanks for the great video!
I’m 46 and still feel like a kid. I don’t think that ever changes! 😂 You’re starting a a great age. Thanks for the RU-vid love and be sure to keep us posted on your BJJ journey.🙏👊🏼
Yes...I’ve seen people do it but I’ve never had any luck with the tape staying on - or I hated the restricted feeling when stepping or using your foot to drive off the mat. Your foot expands and flattens when you step and releases or contracts when you’re not using it to drive and step...this constant expanding and contracting feels restrictive to me...but it may be just me. Thanks for hanging out, watching and commenting. Consider subbing if you haven’t already! Thanks, brother!
Thank you for the pep talk! I was just doubting earlier if I should continue training jiujitsu because I honestly suck at it and I'm old. I just started training last week 🤣
Hey man! I just wanted to share with you that I got my first white belt stripe last weekend 😄 Thanks so much for your videos. It gave me encouragement ❤
pidyong crsz it’s crazy that you just asked that question because I was thinking of shooting a video to talk about it...the costs for training usually range from $75 a month to $125...but can go higher. I haven’t seen prices much leads than $75 but if other viewers can chime in - that’d be great. This is just my experience with pricing. I guess a lot of the price depends on the competition in the area and level of Instructor....just my 2 cents but thanks for asking! If you haven’t subscribed to my channel - it’d mean a ton to me if you would! Thanks again! 🙏
@@midlifebjj thanks for the reply.. I'm also a BJJ blue belt (been training for 4 years) in the Philippines and I'll be going to the USA in a couple of months. At least I have an idea of the figures.

It would help me out and I'd sincerely appreciate it! Thanks again for the feedback. Always appreciated!
I’m 33 years old and had a kind of bad first class 😢. The class does not start with warmup and goes straight to a sweep that is super complicated (at least for a loser like me 😅). Nobody was interested to train with me. It felt like to be the lone kid in the elementary school 😢. The instructor after some awkward minutes paired me with a blue belt that was not so friendly and for the most of time he was irritated that I could not perform the sweep. I did my absolutely best. And that what we did for the class. When we moved forward for the sparring I received a 5 min crash course from the instructor of how to sparring and the rules. Luckily i had a purple belt that showed me a lot of techniques and that was super helpful. So perhaps I will go on, but man that was not the first class I thought it would be.
Maybe just a bad first class. Give them the benefit of the doubt and visit once more. If you get the same result, don’t even finish the class…just politely walk off the mats and google more places to roll…I promise - you’ll find a place that fits you. It may take some time However
