In this www.artistshous... interview, Maggie Lange, an attorney and Professor of Music Business/Management at Berklee College of Music, describes the major points to be found in a recording contract and what they actually mean for you, the artist, such as: the term of the contract; what your royalty checks will actually contain; and what decisions are taken out of your hands when you sign on the dotted line.

She is telling it strait up, I know first hand record company's are very funny if they decide not to release a project but keep your music tied up it's called sitting you on the bench. Many record company's play a trick on artist it's called keeping the talent off the street. They will sign a singer or a act and do nothing with them to keep another record company from signing them and making competition. It's not fair but it's the way things are done in the music business.

This is good information, presented well. I know it's popular now to dis record labels, but there are currently more potentially evil digital parasites, streaming services and television talent shows lurking around than there are labels. Short story seems to be that if you're a pop artist, a label is probably your best shot, and could learn from this lady. If not, now is a great time to be indie.

@ParanoidThyroid
@ParanoidThyroid 9 лет назад
Not only that, but you have to stay big. If your next album flops, they can still easily drop your ass to the curb and then you end up in debt. It's like taking a loan out from a bank to start a business and then having it foreclosed; ending up losing money. That's why there are so many one hit wonders. If they can't write another radio song, they're done for

Understand, this world is place of business, no matter what field of career you choose, you are meant to sacrifice in some kind of way, in consumer words you would say that person is trying to set an example but again in reality we're all slaves to society if you want to make money.

@WhitneyChakara
@WhitneyChakara 15 лет назад
what i have heard mostly with pop artist or hiphop/r&b artist is that they get a all in advance that includes a budget so that the artist can pay the producer and things of the sort. like a recording budget of 500,000 plus the artist advance. Ive heard this would be because it cost alot more to pruduce these records than for rock and country. CHA

If you can cope alone, stay alone, keep a label out. First you need to create value for yourself so you have a better starting point when you actually negotiate a contract. A artist with no buildup value doenst have the power to change a contract to protect his own wishes. He will be a puppet. The first year dont even think you earn decent money because the investment of the label has to be earned back. Artists earn money with gigs.

The point is after you have paid the label back for all that advance money, plus production cost.... lawyer fees, management fee’s etc.....12%, whether $12, or $8/9 will definitely “NOT” make an artist a millionaire, but just simply keep them in debt! ARTIST: If you’re looking to get rich making music, then educate yourself on the Music Business, stay Independent, gain traction in your own lane, invest in yourself..... for goodness sake social media is flooded with so many outlets. Signing to a big label is pointless, unless you’ve already established yourself. You can make demands when you have put in the work LEVERAGE IS POWER! IJS ~eatingmyownwordsbtw~

Listen to this woman and also get your self a book called "All I Need To Know About The Music Business" If you have not been signed to a major record label or you are not a attorney who secures record contracts with record company's then do not make waves in uncharted territory as you do not know what you are talking about.

Judging by the comments, you'd think this lady is Satan, lol. I'm not saying she's got a great set of morals or anything, but she gave a lot of insight. She wasn't trying to give an opinion of any sort, just explain the ins and outs and she did a great job at it. Me, I fucking hate the record industry, but I didn't find this nearly offensive as one might think.

@JohnF30Music exactly, the music industry is just that, an INDUSTRY. I hate when artists with crap overly obsure, anti mainstream and artsy music with no appeal (let alone mass appeal) bitch about not making it, if you're all about your "art" so damn much you wouldn't even be going after a deal, there are house musicians, music teachers etc playing music for the love of it all over the world. let's be honest everyone in the industry wants at least some kind of money in the industry

nothing is free...its "free" to the public...but usually picks up somewhere else along the lines..so there's not really a deal of being "free". just marketing schemes. in a nutshell childish example of how this works... candy bar: $1 or two smaller candy bars for $0.50 each.

To solve that, make your own music, promote your own creativity, package your own! Don't sign the contract! It's that simple. Therefore they own nothing 🤣. Most importantly write your own music! You make all the money. You don't need them 🤣😂🤣 promote yourself 💁

If you can convince someone to loan you all the costs of making it- which is what Sony does - it's about 2 million invested according to Simon Cowell- which is for all that is needed to launch and promote an artist and you behave like it's a business then you might break even in 5 years - if you know what ur doing. Lets face it -a Label is there to make money off you.It's not a charity. But If you have some core fans - which most bands have, well , you can have fun and make a living...

She isn't being entirely truthful here. The record company can simply decide not to release any of your music because they don't "hear a hit," but that doesn't mean you get to walk away and have another label put out your album. They still own you until THEY decide they don't own you anymore. If they want to tie you up so that no one else can sign you, they can do that. At some point your career is dead and THEN they release you. Good luck.
