One thing I feel should be said is, be nice! Not everyone in the plant community is as advanced as others. Remember if you brought cuttings of "rare" or hard to find plants... you are going to have interest, even from people with plants like pothos. Remember to be kind even if you wish not to trade. Maybe try bringing smaller cuttings or something you can barter with those people with in addition. It makes our community stronger. These people will then have something amazing added to their collection. No matter what, don't be rude about it, you are not better because you can afford expensive plants. Just be nice about how you say things. ❤🙂
This is absolutely so true and I can't believe I forgot to mention this! Thank you for saying this - not everyone can afford expensive plants so it's definitely important to remember to be nice about how we approach these situations!
I once came to a plant swap one hour after it started and there were only spider plants left. Definitely worth it to come early. I prefer online swaps, they are more convenient.
Great info! Plant swap anxiety is strong with me! I had a full on hyperventilating anxiety attack before I went to my second swap but I still went and had a great time even though I awkwardly told people I was nervous. 😅 Also, I love saving all the plant tags people make for the plants I’ve swapped for 😁
I’m so glad you posted this! I’m going to my first plant swap on my birthday on the 15th and I was really worried about not having rare or huge plants to bring. I’m super new to all of this so this video really helped me

This is very helpful, I've done some online swaps from facebook groups but looking forward to my first full blown plant swap after all this CV-19 stuff calms down.
My only concern with packing/taping the plants to prevent soil spillage is that people wont be able to really inspect the plant. I like to bring bare-rooted plants in moist paper towel/clear zip lock bags so that swappers can see the roots/plant is healthy and pest free.
Hi Becca, great information on plant swaps. I haven't had the opportunity to attend one yet. But I did go to Instagram and follow the indoor jungle tag, that is such a great thing that you created, thanks for that. I think that I might be asking my local nursery if they know of any plant swaps around my area. It really does sound like it could be a lot of fun and maybe a bit scary at first, but to connect with other plant lovers would be awesome. Maybe try working with local places to have some raffles, I thought those brought a good break during the hustle of trading and made it more fun! :) good luck on yours!

The plant swaps here is different from yours. We place our cuttings/plants on a table. We get in line. First round, we just take a look to see what kind of plants there are. Second round, we choose ONE plant. Third round and so one, we pick up TWO plants until all the plants are gone. It all depends on the rules from the host.
I really wish we had more barter-type plant swaps here in Toronto. I went to the two biggest swaps here this year and they were both a free-for-all (set your plant down and just grab a new plant - one for one regardless of size or health of the plant). It was a rough experience!
That is so strange to me that your plant swaps are set up like that! Seems like a situation where you could bring really cool stuff and leave with nothing particularly exciting 😣
I think that's what I'm in for this month. It's called "Take a cutting leave a cutting". I'm just bringing a dragon fruit plant that I'm not very much in love with just to see how it goes. More about the experience for my first time :-). Hope your next swap is better.

I have questions! (I also see this is 4 years old...) I am going to one next week. I don't understand the *logistics* as in, do people just go over and grab one of my cuttings without bargaining? I have asked the organizer and was blown off, like it wasn't important. I don't want to bring my "prized" cuttings and I go and there's SURPRISE! a metric shit ton of pothos.
So definitely expect a lot of pothos, spider plants, and tradescantia (everyone starts somewhere!). TYPICALLY there is bargaining - here is an example exchange: Person 1: hey, I’m interested in your *insert plant cutting* - my table is over there *points*, take a look and let me know if there is anything you’d like to trade for. Person 2: that sounds great! *walks over* I will trade *insert plant* for my *insert plant*? Person 1: that sounds great! *trades*

I’ve been wanting to go to one but I’m just not a social butterfly 😳 I get anxiety/panic attacks when around too many people. I tried to volunteer (many years ago) to rancho Santa Ana botanical garden (Claremont California) & the ladies that interviewed me were so rude, I just never tried again.
That's no fun, I would also suggest trying to make online friends. You can do trades online too! I have made better plant friends online than I have in my area and I am from a big plant community area... haha. Hope you can start having better experiences that can help with your anxiety!
Check out the Episode of On the Ledge Podcast about plant swaps and maybe join Jane's FB group. She is UK based and very knowledgeable about plants. I bet there are some around.
