I’m as interested in Coach Pope’s defensive scheme. His first several players to land with him at Kentucky are defensive specialists and defense was a major concern for Cal’s Cats this last year. He and his staff immediately identified defensive issues and addressed them. I do believe that his system, when implemented to its maximum efficiency on both ends of the court will be spectacular.
Also don’t rule out the 2 instate freshman we have that can shoot and pass. I think I heard that Perry & Noah were top of there class academically . They should be able to learn quickly!!
Several BYU games from last year are on YT, including the ones used here, and besides being educational for UK fans, they're also a lot of fun. It's hard to not get excited by this system.
With the resources they’ll have for Pope, KY will do great things. People are criticizing Pope but seem quick to forget BYU beat Kansas, Texas and Baylor last season.
And they did it with maybe only 1 of the 5 best players on the floor any point in the game. It was mostly mediocre players being used to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. That's exciting to see.
I’m so lost on what you say whatever they decide to do with 5 Amari would be the guy just off his passing ability not to mention he’s a beast who will be in the running for SEC defensive player of the year, Garrison will get some minutes but I like Carr playing some 5 for the Khalifa role and being a bigger threat from deep
Cannot wait! This is going to be fun! But pretty sure PCoach Pope is going to tweek his system so not sure it'll be the same thing he had at BYU. Pope's tenor seems that he will evolve this.
Generally speaking, any healthy system evolves a bit year to year to fit personnel. Even Cal did that much. This is very natural, but the core principles aren't going to change.
Was great listening to and seeing Shawn breakdown a few of the offensive sets. I would love to hear his breakdowns on Pope's defensive teachings and how having more defensive oriented players will make it better. The offense can be talked about all summer long, but the defense will be our question mark at the moment. You guys do great work!
BYU guy here. And a big Pope fan (which he didn't have enough of in the BYU fanbase -- which had more to do w silly local & instate politics than anything; Mark Pope was the best thing to happen to BYU bball -- quite possibly ever) As for the observation that Pope will run the offense through the 5 -- THAT is based probably entirely on last season's BYU footage. That was largely about Aly Khalifa. But Aly was WAY too much of a defensive liability for Pope to even think about taking to Lexington w him. (And KY at BYU didn't put up any fight in retaining him when Louisville put up a reported 600 th-ou for him (which frankly is WAY too much. Dude has NBA-level court vision & perimeter ball handling for a 6'11 guy -- but his proportional reach is quite possibly the worst in D1 for 6'10+ guys (his arms are puny), & his athleticism & mobility will still be terrible even if his knee surgery & scheduled 1-year hiatus works out fabulous for him. (And best of luck to him! Dude is a phenomenal bball mind & a real warrior. One of the biggest crowd favorites at BYU in a long time.)) As for this year, though, Pope's gonna run his motion offense largely through his PGs. And whoever else might step up in practice & prove themselves worthy of that role. I can tell you now that Pope largely recruited guys he trusts & knows. If you didn't notice, most of his pickups were kids he's faced over the last few years at BYU. (And Kriisa he even twice-recruited while at BYU. He might be marginal NBA talent at best, but take it to the bank you're gonna love him running Pope's offense. And you'll love Butler as a glue PG, too.) And of the other transfer signees -- you can be sure they were initially looked at based on advanced stats more than any other criteria. You can also be sure Pope will build more on leave-early kids down the road, but he'll NEVER do that to the degree Calipari does, nor to the degree that UK is used to. And I'm not at all surprised he didn't bring in any such guys on this transfer-dominant roster he was forced to turn to in the wake of the mass roster exodus he was facing. Those type of kids are of course leadership & flow killers. If you're gonna accommodate them, you gotta build around them, & Pope wasn't in a position to do that with his last-minute scramble at roster-building. Best of luck to you guys. I'm a big Pope fan, so I certainly wish you guys the best. Be very gracious to him in this first season, of course. I like your roster's ability to compete with just about anyone, but will Pope have the time to get the chemistry outa this thrown-together group -- that'll he'll need to be a Top 10 team & a real contender? I'm not so sure.
Watching this offense, everyone says what if u aren't making 3s. They're really not hunting 3s. All of these plays have the ball moving to the front of the rim and kicked out to a wide open 3. So, what they want is a layup first or a lob. U won't see many lobs on this BYU team because of the size difference. The difference is the 3s they will shoot are wide open shots and not a guy taking his man 1v1 and pulling up from 3
I watched some tape on BYU running "zoom," and I wonder how much Pope is influenced by Larry Bird. The pin-down screens on the three-point line look like Bird setting up his guy for a curl or corner three, especially. Could Jack Pilgrim ask Mark Pope about how much his philosophy came from Bird, and are we going to see him at Rupp? Is Pope the only former Bird player to coach, or who else is coaching that played for Larry Legend?
Coaches have access to every game through synergy. Those 10 clips were against teams that had scouts. It’s about making reads and understanding how to play in situations. Still a tough scout even if you have film.
BYU has much higher standards than we do at Kentucky. BYU is clearly a top Academic University with very high standards. We don’t have high standards at Kentucky!!!
When speaking about the players and y’all say things like.. it opens up the play for a brea or a krisa or chandler??? Why throw the A ? They’re not things! Whoever started that talk I wish never would’ve said it causes y’all ain’t the only ppl who do it. I feel like that’s how slave owners talked back in the day.
Thats on you cause this is our team. Pope was/is and always will be my main man. Don't doubt he has clout! I'll bet you he wins an NCAA banner before Arkansas does.
BYU has smarter players and very high character students. We can’t expect this kind of movement from our players. Pope actually had much better players at his last university.
Lmao like you already know everything because you have a crystal ball that can see you in the next year. Close your skull hatch, people are putting too much poop in there, and try learning facts and numbers. Pope has never had a team like this before and that's because of KY. All the greatest coaches didn't become great until they got to a big school.
@@johnnycorn7225 There’s no need to make rude and delusional comments. With NIL, the new “Blue Bloods” and “Big” schools are completely different than they were in the past. I hope we can stay competitive, but I’m not sure yet. Best wishes.
@@theoptimist9605 don't post y o u r delusions on here in people won't call you out for it. He could only recruit Mormons at BYU, the ultimate recruiting handicap. You knew when you posted this it was a lost cause statement. It's funny how you're trying to sound like a UK fan. Pope actually addressed that exact issue during his Open Mic practice. He made it clear there would be no standing around and lack of effort on offense or defense. So do I believe you or coach?
Your comment implies that coach Pope will now recruit an entirely different type of player than he did at BYU. You do realize it will be easier for Pope to recruit his type of player at UK because the grade requirements are easier than BYU
I've seen you on other Kentucky message boards pretending to be a Kentucky fan but bashing KY. You even made one comment about Parsons regretting his decision which is totally false. Now you are even praising BYU. You're a troll.
