My 2 1/2 Syrian is the pickiest eater. Refuses to eat meal worms, oat spray and only eats certain seed mix while nibbling a bit on the protein pieces. He loves veggies, dried apple and whimzee chews though.

A nice inexpensive hack to get an abundance of pumpkin seeds for a hamster is to buy a pumpkin a few days before Halloween. They often go on sale at my local store. Last year I got a pumpkin for $5 and I still have some seeds left

My hamster's diet: Every time he finishes his food we give him a handful of regular hamster food and a couple dried bananas and raisins. His favorite food is peanut butter and apples, he gets about 1 Smol piece of apple per day and about 3 spoons of peanut butter per week. Every week or so he gets some egg / chicken.

I’m going to get a hamster in the near future and the diets are so confusing and I want to give my hamster the best life, and your videos are so helpful! I just have hard times understanding the diets so I’m really scared to get the wrong thing :((

I make it myself, it is a mix of: Oats, Pine nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, freeze dried chicken breast, freeze dried strawberries and bananas, strawberries, carrots, then some freeze dried kale, and parsley. I don’t know if it’s perfect but I tried :)

My hamster food is vegies and fruits and sometimes meat is it healthy?

Do you have any concerns about the Kaytee Forti Diet Pro Health hamster and gerbil food? I use it but with freeze dried mealworms added in for protein and a small salad every second night. I feed my hamster about a tablespoon of food every night when his food is gone and the amount of mealworms added in is about a teaspoon.

What mealworms do you use?

My hamster is so picky. I haven't tried with meat yet tho. He loves bugs, sun flower seeds, nuts, those hard carrot and green nutrients , banana chips and corn chips I guess? And his died is kinda low on these and full of other seeds he wont even eat.

I've noticed that some walmarts here are selling the Rosewood herb mix. I flipped out when I saw it because I was excited to try it out with my hamsters, and I think it was $3ish.

Great video, Victoria, thank you. I was wondering where/how you get your Mazuri blocks? I remember you are in Cananda like me and for the life of me I cannot find any to purchase or ship to Alberta. For now I am using the Sunseed Critter Cubes (which I read on Hamster Hideout are a decent alternate option). I find it weird that my local independent pet store carries a bunch of other Mazuri products but not that one. At least they carry Higgins Sunburst.

Omg I wanted to adopt A syrian hamster but the hamstercare was so so bad where I wanted to buy A syrian. Im actually pretty mad now because 10 syrians lived together (Some where A year some where babies) she woke him up and the hamster maked weird noises and she just grabbed him from above... I was looking at the food we purchased for my son's mice that had a nice mix of pellets, seeds, dried fruits, and dried vegetables. It's Carefresh Complete Farmer's Garden. The bag says Mouse & Rat food, but I figured it would be a good combination to start my daughter's new hamster on. Turns out, it meets ALL of the requirements for protein, fat, and fiber that you recommended in this video!

I've needs this video for *so long* I'm about to get a hamster for my birthday, don't worry its gonna be living in the detolf and I did my research, anyways. I've been wondering what to feed my hamster! This video is soo helpful!

I used to breed hammies back in the day & my feed mix looked exactly like yours except that I mixed the herbs in. If I couldn't find dried veggies at the pet store I bought them in the soup aisle of my health food store (dried veggies only, not with any broth material in it). I would supplement with limited fresh fruit & veg so as not to cause wet tail or diarrhea. I wanted to caution when providing fresh food that hamsters are hoarders & will bring their food stash back to their den to unload. Fresh food has a certain moisture content & if food is left uneaten (usually by over feeding them) it rots & that is very unhealthy for rodents. Best to limit the fresh food & check all dens periodically for mold. I had one Syrian who always hoarded his fresh food so I fed him dried fruits & veg. He loved the dried strawberries. Broccoli is the only fresh food he got as he usually gobbled it down. Also, proteins weren't readily available where I live so I would substitute scrambled eggs & good quality cheese (no Velveeta plz) They loved it.

REMINDER: if you have mealworms in your hamster's diet, be sure to check them every once in a while. if they aren't dead, and your hamster doesn't eat it, they turn into a mealworm beetle!
