An excerpt from the personal feedback to Robin on secrets of solo. We were talking about what to put your attention towards when practicing solo jazz.
Robin knows quite a lot of steps and variation. At this point, I think there is no need to get even more steps… what’s important is to work on QUALITY of the movement one already has.
The steps are just steps. They are just shape and form. Very cool and impressive and, no doubt, essential. Though they will fade in moments unless “the how” is not worked on. “Ain’t what you do it’s the way that you do it”, isn’t it, jazzers” 🎺
Focus on important things:
💬Are you breathing? Is your chest alive, moving? Shake the dust.
💬Are you tense, holding something?…let it go, drop to -1.
💬Are you bouncing or jumping?
💬Are you dropping your weight to carry it on a tray?
💬What about your arms…are they alive and free to move from scapula?
💬Maybe you are so “relaxed” that it's sloppy…?
💫Scan your body. Put attention to your bounce, weight, chest, arms, feet. Jazz dancing is not just feet stepping this and that way, right?
