What to Intercrop with Climbing Beans to Maximize Yields In Your Permaculture Garden

In this video I share the best plants to intercrop with climbing beans to maximise yields in your vegetable garden. Climbing beans such as runner beans are a fantastic crop that allow you to plant many other edible crops so you can grow as much food as possible, and it is especially useful if you have a small space vegetable garden such as a patio garden. Intercropping, which is also known as interplanting, is a great tool for permaculture vegetable gardeners as it helps encourage diversity in planting and improve the soil health.

I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years now and there is always something to learn. I’m copying what you’ve done here with runners and dwarf beans and I will be planting some dill, nasturtiums and parsley under/near them. I’ve already planted some cornflowers under some of my runners. I’m looking forward to seeing all the flowers alongside the veg. Thank you for sharing your experiences. You present so well. Always clear instructions and the camera work is also excellent, so congratulations to whoever does the filming and recording. You’ve done a fine job! It’s always a pleasure to watch all these well made videos. So thank you Huw and the team. You and Charles Dowding are my ‘go to’ people for information. You have made such a difference to my own gardening. I’ve been learning to grow for about 20 years now and have tried all sorts of methods and made all sorts of mistakes and although I’ll always be learning, I do love to see things working so well (most of the time) and this no dig method is wonderful. I’ve not looked back since discovering no dig. I did all that double digging and weeding for years and I’m over the moon at how much labour I’m saving working like this … and the results are way better than the old fashioned methods. Mulching has brought my soil back to life! Hope I haven’t gone on too long, but THANK YOU!

And I love listening to the old lessons being used, generation after generation 👩‍🌾👍

@@HuwRichards Crape Myrtle trees are cut way back in February here in Central Florida. Ours are about 6'-8' and I use them to make Tee-pees and also I use the shorter ones to make a hoop fence to keep dogs and kids out of my Front yard garden. It's really amazing how many people throw away what they do have to go out and buy almost the same thing. That's why I started Peggy Helbling's Garden What You've Got. I see you doing the same thing and it makes me happy to know that there's a new group of gardeners following your brilliant tips 👩‍🌾👍

I'm a huge promoter of Amaranth as the main crop, then vine beans attached on their stems, u can add pumpkins/melons for ground cover and marigolds as a pollinators attractor...it's based on the 3 sisters of concept, but Amaranth is a superior crop(than corn),more healthy and also you can eat the greens of it (instead of spinach or salad)
@1Lightdancer
@1Lightdancer 3 года назад
Love that you're using amaranth in your "3 sisters" garden- I remember a book on grain and pseudo grain culture in the 70s - in the bit on amaranth, they talked about the ritual importance, and how the seeds were planted in small cells (like peat pots - don't remember what they used) and planning out in huge areas ... I've got the perennial relative Good King Henry that's a decade old, and going strong. The leaves are some of my earliest greens, (along with my nettles) and I can eat throughout the year.
@dominic6055
@dominic6055 3 года назад
@@1Lightdancer interesting info ! I want to add also that amaranth is an ancient crop and more healthy and compatible to the human body,compared to modern grains and greens such as spinach, Dr.Sebi is has very good points about our foods which turn out to be not that healthy as we may think
