Two different cicada broods will simultaneously emerge across the U.S. this spring for the first time since 1803. Dr. Sammy Ramsey, who studies all things insects at the University of Colorado Boulder, joins CBS News to explain what these bugs will do, and what you can do to prepare.

I get the feeling some commenters have never experienced a swarm of cicadas. Remember, sometime in the 1980s?, in Falls Church, VA, was horrible. Had to screen the front of the cars because we drove thru walls of cicadas. People had to use umbrellas when walking thru the walls of flying cicadas. The ground was covered with inches of crunchies, making walking hazardous and creepy. Can’t remember how long it lasted, couple weeks?

Yes you do need to prepare. We did this whole thing in MD a couple years ago and if you're in a heavily affected area you should stock up on ear plugs and clean your gutters. If you have water standing in your gutters the cicadas will roll in and drown. It's not fun. 🫤 Also educate kids so they can observe without interfering with the insects. And if you have dogs, work on training them not to eat off the ground: they should not be allowed to consume cicadas. If you're concerned they won't listen, muzzles can help. It's always a good idea to muzzle train your dog in case of emergency (injury etc) anyway. (I also found the cidades tend to get stuck if they can't see the sky, they tend to roll over and eventually die on covered porches. At the height of things I was going outside 4-5 times a day to remove them and get them flying again. More fun than dealing with the bodies. The nice thing is they don't bite and their little feets don't hurt when they hold onto you.)

I am more worried for the Cicadas. This stage of their life is entirely for mating and it only happens every 17years. A lot has changed in 17 years and if this doesn't go well their population could be decimated.

These insects naturally emerge during 13 and 17 year cycles because 13 and 17 are both prime numbers, and therefore have no common factors. 13 times 17 is 221, and that's why the groups have not emerged together since 1803, 221 years ago. Also, after watching the interview with this doctor, my gaydar is going off louder than an oak tree full of both groups of cicadas.

Love the love for the bugs just thought I should mention that (2:59) the way the db (decibel) scale is logarithmic not liner so so the difference between 100dB-120dB is much greater than 80sB-100dB so a jet engine works be much much louder than the cicadas, there still plenty loud though. So I think for every 3dB increase is twice the power but hearing is subjective but it is estimated that for every increase of 10dBs it sends twice as loud. Thanks for the nerdy goods on the cicadas

Col. in charge of a Tank Division in far western Africa, where thousands of barrels of oil,and hundreds of tanks were being built up stated this; He had the men dig a 3 foot wide perimeter trench all around the camp about a foot deep and filled it with oil. The locusts said he "were so numerous that they would drown themselves crossing the river of oil, using the drowned locusts like a bridge". He also said that "the locusts ate literally everything that was growing leaving not a thing". He also stated that, "when they departed, it was just like the Biblical statement, that they were so numerous, that they blocked out the Sun for hours, on their way to East Africa".
