When we switch back to a trailer, we will strongly consider the 7.3. It's worthy of the same job and as you pointed out, a much better payload capacity. Appreciate you commenting and following along. Wishing you well!

I agree with you Glynn, go big or go home! I easily tow an Outdoors RV Glacier Peak F28RKS (5th wheel) with a Ram 2500 diesel and only know it’s behind me when I going up a mountain pass. Were I to do it again I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase and tow with a one ton! Bonus that the Diamondback came with yours! Enjoy! Adventure is out there

Hubs and I think Ford should pay you for promoting their product. Great video! Hubs said if you upgrade to a fifth wheel, you'll lose much of the utility of the bed. Tradeoffs. I researched trucks for what one would serve me best in towing the boat. My non-negotiable #1 was a standard transmission so that left me with Toyota or Nissan. Either the Tacoma or Frontier would suit my needs. The Tacoma could tow a out 3200 lbs, the Frontier 6200 lbs. I figured the Frontier better as it wouldn't tax the engine as much pulling the boat. I got a tiedown system with mine, which I hadn't thought about, but LOVE it. The only standard one they had was a used crew cab model, so the bed is short (5 feet). At times, I would have preferred the longer bed, but having the ability to seat four people comfortably and possibly five if everyone's not huge is nice, too. Am I sorry I have the six speed rather than the automatic? That would be a HARD NO. While I can drive an automatic, it's not nearly as enjoyable for me. Hubs has gone over to the automatic side; I'm still holding out

You can go bigger w that truck the gvwr is artificially low for commercial DOT purposes. There is very little difference in components between an f250 and 350. The brakes, front end and rear end on diesels and 7.3s are the same. Thousands of ppl run them heavier than 10k but within the axle ratings with no issues at all. Do as you wish but I’d be comfortable with going as high as the axles GAWR and registering it higher to cover the extra.
@ResetYourJourney
@ResetYourJourney 2 года назад
I've no doubt you're correct John. I can see why Ford would list the GVWR lower than reality for multiple reasons. And with society as litigious as it is, I don't blame them. I'm willing to go bigger, but that doesn't stop me from fantasizing about an F450... can't blame a guy. I appreciate your input as well as you taking the time to watch. Wishing you well John.

All comes down to tongue weight and total cargo in the f250. We quickly approached our max with over 900lbs of tongue weight from our ORV trailer. Then add all in the water, fuel, supplies, and generators in the truck bed... gets heavy fast!

Good morning, Glynn and Rose! Holy smokes….what an important video! There are so many hidden snakes in the grass with regards to towing that will jump out and bite. Since we keep our vehicles a long time, I ended up ordering our truck so as to get the features we wanted…..or didn’t want. Also, since we had a 1 ton Ram truck up until a few years ago, I was still a bit budget conscious. So, We ended up opting for a lower trimmed gasser 1 ton. Both the lower trim and gas engine saved huge $$ as compared to the upper 3rd trimmed diesel truck. I also did not want to count pounds. So, we opted for the 1 ton, full bed. We have been involved in mis/overloaded pulling that resulted in crazy sway….and it wasn’t pretty. Hence, the biggest single rear wheel we could get. We may not get back to every single boondock spot that other could, but the 14 or 16 extra inches probably won’t limit us too much. The gas engine did get us more payload; ours is around 4300 lbs. And, the full size bed is great for our mega town parades hehehe We opted for the relatively new ford gas 7.3 l engine. I was a bit apprehensive since we live in CO and every trip will be uphill. So far, I am really happy with it! It can do the speed limit up any mountain pass. It does get to 3500 or 4000rpms, but it is way quieter than years earlier models. The 10 speed transmission is far smoother than my Ram’s 6 speed. The limitation, for me, is if we have to slow down on the climb due to an animal or other vehicle or maybe debris on the road, it would be longer for me to accelerate than a diesel. The truck could get up to speed faster, but I never feel that desire for instant speed….especially at a greatly reduced fuel economy. Safe travels! PS. And, with the long bed, we did get the larger fuel tank, which is awesome!

I'm so glad you gave me some insight on the gas engine version. It sounds more than capable. No one buys these trucks for fuel economy, so that's not even a factor. Great feedback Alan! Thank you!
@campingalan
@campingalan 2 года назад
@@ResetYourJourney Hi there! I see I forgot 1 point.....the 1 feature that I do miss is the adaptive cruise that will slow your speed down when you have a slower vehicle to your front. We would have had to upgrade to the Lariet trim to be able to buy that feature. I believe that would have been approx $4-5k for the higher trim, and that option.

@wishusknight3009
@wishusknight3009 2 года назад
There are certainly pro's and cons to either. Unloaded gas trucks can be much more comfortable and quiet to drive, and still smooth even loaded. Fuel consumption, the rule of thumb tends to be about 25% economy difference in favor of diesel. And the long term reliability of the gasser tends to be lower. Though in honesty I can not say that last one is actually true of trucks in the last 10 years, if you don't abuse it and stick to at least the recommended schedule then it will most likely give you a long service life regardless. Out of warranty a gasser can also be much cheaper to maintain as well in the long term. Front suspensions last longer and so forth. And the modern emissions stuff on diesels can be quite pricey to replace after several years of service. Most people I know around here delete them. I have told people if you only occasionally tow with the truck, and its mostly lighter duty work otherwise, gaspot is ideal and saves some money, and don't hesitate to get the bigger engine. For full time towing, diesel is the only option.
@wishusknight3009

@@campingalan I have heard many wonderful things about that engine and transmission combo. And they are not too far behind in power either to the diesels it would seem. They hold their own.

That diamond back cover is a real jem . Diesel is nice if you really need the towing power but for your trailer weight either the 6.2 or the 7.3 would have been enough easily , not even a work out for them . I have a gas 21 F250 and my payload capacity is 3,678 lbs. That's almost double your . Word of advise don't follow the Ford maintenance schedule, cut them in half if you want a healthy truck . In fact doing a yearly rear differential, transfer case and front differential and transmission fluid exchange goes a long way for happy travels . Good luck and enjoy what your doing 👍

Thank you for commenting Ken. Agreed, the maintenance schedule done more frequently is worth a lot of prevention. It's a personal policy that I've followed with all my vehicles in the past. Gas would have definitely increased my payload. Again, I wish I had known a lot more before shopping for a tow vehicle. Fortunately, I ended up with one I'm confident with towing so frequently for long distances. Thanks again Ken and we wish you well!

Glen, like me I have no loyalty to any car maker. I turn in my truck in 12mths which we'll see where fuel costs are etc. Don't see an end to high fuel prices. Although I will still have to decide. And thankfully TT is 22 ft box total of 26.1 and we travel light since we're weekenders. We traded up from a 19ft TT the first week of Feb 2022; If it were up to me, I'd be in a much smaller camper. But Happy Wife Happy LIfe lol This is the one time I can live with less and love that.

For the 2,163 limit on the cargo, the graphic says Ford assumes four 150 lbs passengers. So assuming you are solo and a svelte 150 lbs, would that be an extra 450 lbs you could add to that 2163? Any idea was % factor of safety they use when rating the payload? Also with the tires, I assume that tires that are recommended for the vehicle carry a similar rating? If you were to go for a less expensive tire are you potentially compromising your total payload?
@ResetYourJourney
@ResetYourJourney 2 года назад
Great questions Andrew! 1) The 150lbs is within the 2163, not above. In fact, if you deduct the 4 passengers (600) you end up with 3/4 ton. 2) Not sure of the percentage. 3) Correct. Tires need to be within the parameters for the potential capicity. So, no compromising quality.. unless you like blowouts. Thanks Andrew!

@@ResetYourJourney you are correct about the 150# above. Having RV-d & towed trailers 40+ years is why i stepped up to a F350 vs F250. ~$1700 more (new 2021) vs a F250. You gain a lot of additional cargo capacity (~1k #) . My F150 with a heavy tow pkg was ~2080# capacity not that much less than a diesel F250. My bet is most diesel F250 people towing a fair sized tt are overloaded by the time they have added some equipment in the bed, passengers, and the weight distribution bars + hitch head. Your hitch wt is probably 1k -1200#'s . I weighted mine at 1k once & 1200# another time. Dry from the factory it was listed at ~700#. Add batteries, propane, then fill the trailer and it goes up pretty quickly.

@@ResetYourJourney The same F-250 with a 7.3 gas will give you an extra 600lb of payload. The diesel weighs 600 pounds more that the 7.3 gas. My 2021 F-250 with the 7.3 gas has a payload of 2,929 lb. You get an additional 45HP with the diesel 430HP vs 475HP.
