Not all bird seed mixes are great. Most available on the open market are filled sticks, stems, "junk filler seeds" that add weight to the bag but are not eaten by many of the birds you want to attract to your yard. Most "desirable" birds like cardinals, chickadees, titmice and finches are seed eaters. Quality seed mixes contain high value seeds such as black oil sunflower, safflower and peanuts. "Cheap" seed mixes are filled with grains like milo, millet, oats and chopped corn. Many food studies have proven that these grains tend to attract blackbirds, House Sparrows and other undesirables.
