Port City cabs are the greatest sounding/built cabs out there! Daniel's customer service is absolutely the top shelf.

I know this is about vintage amp buying, but I just have to say, my Port City 2x12 oversized wave cab is the best piece of gear I’ve ever owned. I’ll be willing it to my son when I die! Ha

If you're powering up an old amp, do it where you can throw the breaker on your breaker box, if things go bad instead of touching the amp or power cord...beats getting shocked

Easier option is to put a GFCI in circuit between the amp & wall outlet. It’ll pop/melt the GFCI instead of set your house on fire.

@jasondorsey7110 Месяц назад
@@southernpanda33You don't keep a variac in your car? =P
@southernpanda33
@southernpanda33 Месяц назад
@@jasondorsey7110 why would I do that? All that does is alter the voltage, it’s not a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) so it wouldn’t help that much.
@jasondorsey7110
@jasondorsey7110 Месяц назад
@@southernpanda33 I was being cheeky, but turning it on full force will increase the likelihood of it blowing something, easing it in and letting it warm up slowly is better for the amp itself though your point is not lost on me
@southernpanda33
@southernpanda33 Месяц назад
@@jasondorsey7110 ah, I gotcha. Use the variac to start it on the lowest voltage and ease the power up. Makes sense to test it that way but I’d rather know if it’ll pop a tube or fuse right away. Gives me bargaining chips lol

I think I have the worlds only Gibson GA-20 Cabinet with a 12” Weber. (Someone trashed my buddy’s vintage amp years ago. Luckily he found a GA-40 to replace it.) Now I run the speaker out from my Fender Greta into the GA-20 Cab.😂❤

Thanks for the Dumble story. I always thought to keep the original tubes on an amplifier was extremely important. Now I feel like I have permission to replace them as needed. Great video!

An interesting point: the body of the electric guitar seems to matter more than it’s hardware or electronics, and the amp is the opposite; the guts are the part people want most to be original and the cab isn’t as important

I just got a mint 1959 Sano. $299 plus $100 at a tech and it’s ready to rock! It’s a difficult thing to purchase a vintage amp because you usually can’t open it up before buying.

Definitely take it apart enough to inspect the circuit components; if you power it up even if the insides look ok, do so through a current-limiter; Probably not a bad idea to become an 'expert' on a limited variety of amps... imho.

I find myself in a weird place where I obsess a little with vintage design, but the idea of having something old, fragile, precious, and worrying about doing something, or something that would impact the value, isn’t something that appeals to me. I’m not compelled to own something just because it’s “vintage,” especially when I can get something that is new and essentially the same thing that won’t be as precious. I have a clone of a tweed vibrolux and it’s awesome! I would love to play a real tweed vibrolux, to compare to mine, but have no desire to own a vintage example. Being in the vintage market now just feels like a painful and expensive way to learn about vintage gear

I have a 1967 Ampeg BT-15 Portaflex Amp that is Complete with all cables, Power cord, that has no chassis rust, has its original Speaker, I no longer seem to play, and live in Gainesville Florida area. It works just fine. So if you need or want that let me know.
@johnbriggs3916

Well, the power cord will need to be replaced for a start, as it won't be electrically safe. The other cables will be 57 years old as well, so they probably shouldn't be used.

I like Daniel's story of the Dumble with original valves sounding dreadful. A couple of years ago I was in a band with a guitarist who used a Selmer amp that he'd had since new in the 1960s. He said it still had its original valves/tubes and I thought it sounded pretty good - although he always went for a tone that was way too bright for my taste. But, of course, I had nothing to compare it against. I wonder how it would have sounded with an overhaul and a fresh set of valves?

Wear points on guitars and amps shouldn't really count against the value. No one expects the original tires, brake pads, and other certain moving parts and stress points on a classic car that's streeted to last forever so why do we expect things like frets, caps, cords, etc., to last forever? Great video as always, guys! I have a Fender Princeton waiting for a decent tax return to get fixed and now I know what to expect going in. Thanks!

Pro Tip: Make sure that you size the wattage of your amp to the environment that you want to use it in. When I bought my '62 Bassman, I got it, plugged it in, decided it was too loud and never turned it on again. For my needs, I'll stick with my Brown Deluxe.

Warm those vintage amps up with a Variac if you haven’t tuned them on in a long while or if you just bought it and don’t know the history. Warm it up slow.
