Advice from a former airplane employee regarding weight. When you get to the airport, go to an empty check in counter and weigh your luggage. If you are close on a bag, a pair of jeans is about one pound, move it to your carry on and then check in without being "that person."

@@workoncruiseship I have been binge watching all of your videos- thank you for all of the helpful information. I am about to start my first contract on a cruise and I was wondering if you could help me out with your input with a few specific items to bring? (I should also mention that I will be flying from the US to Europe to get to my ship) Are the first two provided on the boat or should I be bringing my own? 1. Bed Pillows 2. Blankets/sheets 3. Salt Lamp (Random, I know) but love in my current home 4. Steamer for clothing - would this be considered a fire danger? 5. Electric Kettle (obsessed with hot drinks, teas, coffee)- would this also be considered a fire danger? Thank you so much!

@@JoBearize Congrats on your first contract! 1 & 2 - They do provide these, however, I noticed some still bring one pillow (a little more fluffy) and a small blanket to remind them of home. 3 - Nope, they won't allow it. I'd look into other electronic lamps (mood temperature lamps, etc...) instead. 4 - Nope. This is one of the main things women complain about not being able to bring. 5 - Definite nope. Coffee is hit or miss but there's always somewhere to get hot water on the ship except during the hours of maybe 2am - 5:30am.

Great videos very helpful unlike the emails the employing agent sent out especially the clothing / packing list ! I was meant to start my first contract for Royal as underwater (Aqua) stage crew just before the pandemic hit so now waiting for a vaccine to re-start (start?!?) my contract . Back to the clothing list , it states that I need two suits / dress wear / formal wear . I'm not a small chap and suits weigh a ton. Do I really need posh clothes as a tech ? In fact here is the full list ... Leatherman (multi tools) (tool belt) Optional Flashlight Optional 3-5 plain black polo shirts 2-3 pairs of khaki shorts (optional) 2-3 pairs of plain black jeans or cargo pants 1 pair Black “skid-free” shoes AND 1 pair White shoes ... Do they mean trainers ???? Steel toe caps ??? Boots ??? Several pairs of all black shoes / several pairs of all white socks ... Again trainers ?????? Plain black board shorts and Water shoes (Aqua Divers only) Cruise, Youth, Sports Staff: 1 pair of jeans 1 pair Black “skid-free” shoes White Sneakers 1 pair black dress shoes PJ’s for Pajama Night (Youth Staff only) Black business casual outfit Smart business casual outfit Evening Gown (female) or black tuxedo (male) - can be purchased onboard A pairs of all black shoes / several pairs of all white socks I did ask as I was technical crew not cruise staff did I need all that other stuff and was told I was also cruise staff and would be attending formal nights so yes !?! Sorry about the epic questions but I can't get a decent answer from the recruiter ! Thank you for the time and expert knowledge.
@kipkey8104
@kipkey8104 3 года назад
No, as a STAT or stage staff in general you should not need any formal or themed wear, as our uniform (black polo, black pants) counts as formal wear...for some reason. As for the shoes yes they mean trainers/sneakers. Unless you plan on wearing the optional daytime uniform (black polo, khaki shorts, white socks, white shoes) then I wouldn't worry about bringing white trainers/socks. The steel toed boots are more optional in my experience, but I still bring them because you never know what a charter cruise load-in might have. To go back to the formal wear question, I tend to bring a nice shirt and dress pants for the rare occasion I decide to eat at one of the onboard "fancy" restaurants out of uniform, or there is some crew event. Other then that you'll probably never wear anything other then the standard uniform in guest areas.
@workoncruiseship

Yeah, Royal is weird. I worked for Celebrity when they had just merged with Royal. Brought most of what was on the list only to find out they provided everything for you. As stage staff they may require you to wear steel toe boots (which they should provide). My suggestion is find some comfortable ones and bring your own. The ones they provide are horrible. They also have generic suits as well if you're ever required to wear (ie- you fill in for a lounge tech in the evening). You're right, the list they gave you is geared more towards activity staff. Bring black slacks (straight Dickies will pass for formal, too.) Black polo, black button-up long sleeve, black sneakers, and black boots (will also pass for formal). You'll be fine.

Good videos buddy , im supposed to go work in a cruise when the pandemic end or at least when tourism start again i have a question how do mens do to cut their hair ?
@workoncruiseship
@workoncruiseship 4 года назад
A few different ways: 1- Spa on board usually gives crew members discounted haircuts which are still super expensive in my opinion. 2- There's usually several crew members who have their own hair cutting equipment to make some extra cash. You'll either see them doing this in the hallways or just ask around. I did this once and they only charged 5 USD. 3- In port 4- What I mainly did and have for over 10 years now- Buy yourself some decent clippers (bout 30USD) and do it yourself if you dont care bout perfection haha.

@@workoncruiseship do you ever get sea sick
@workoncruiseship
@workoncruiseship 3 года назад
I've never gotten sea sick on the ships (which is weird cause I've gotten quite queezey but never vomiting on fishing boats as a kid once or twice- maybe the smell of dead fish mixed in with the motion?). However, there have been times on the ship where we would be trying to dodge storms for 2-3 weeks straight. The constant up and down, side to side motions, crashing on large waves would become quite aggravating. Not to mention my office also had rolling chairs. Drinking heavily throughout the day/night helped balance it out though (probably one of the reasons I no longer drink haha).

my children bought me a 6 month around the world cruise. after a military career US Air Force (as a pilot) i’ve been around twice already! my flight luggage was limited to FIVE POUNDS of “luggage” .... What the fudge are my children thinking?? my father was an Admiral in the US Navy and it broke his heart i didn’t go Navy! i can’t swim!!! HOW MUCH STUFF DO I NEED TO PACK AS A PASSENGER?? i guess i’ll find my old duffle bag and fill it with enough junk for half a year. my biggest fear is how will i refill medications on the open sea? i love my kids, i am grateful for this gift. but i know what i use at home in six months, how do i fit that into luggage? this is a new ship, late 2018 was first cruise, so it’s going to be one of those mega liners with glass walkways. didn’t my children recall i can’t swim?

Hi! Thanks for all your information! I appreciate it! I have a question, like a member of the entertainment staff, do you have to do some OMI course before get into the cruise or that's only for the crew member or depends of the country you're in? Thanks for all!
@workoncruiseship
@workoncruiseship 4 года назад
My pleasure. ALL staff and crew (including production cast) have to become STCW-95 certified. The only employees who do not are guest entertainers (these are different than the production singers and dancers- they are independent contractors). For the majority of cruise lines; they'll conduct these courses on board. Usually takes place within the first few weeks of joining the ship; always in the mornings. You'll be excused from your shifts during those times but still have to work after. Can end up being really long days for a few weeks depending on your job. NCL America is the only one where you'll have to become certified prior to joining the ship. They also have to obtain a MMD. Either way, the cruise line pays for all these certifications.

@workoncruiseship
@workoncruiseship 4 года назад
Congrats. Recommendation is around $100 USD. However, I'd make it closer to $200 - $300 USD if you have it. Depends on which country you're departing from and where you're going to meet the ship. Take into account the amount of days you're traveling and how. Some have to take a day-long bus ride just to get to an international airport. Of course airport food is super expensive, too. And any country which takes Euros, US Dollar is not gonna go as far. The last part is for when you're finally acustomed to being on board for a week or so and made some friends- don't want to get stuck searching for an atm in a foreign port that isn't going to kill you on service charges. ATM on board ship (even in crew area) isn't the greatest.

It could depend on position and ship. However, I only worked Celebrity and NCL, you've got your contract with NCL America. The American one I heard is very different (super strict on alcohol policy, most officers are former US Navy, etc...). I couldn't give you my personal experience of it, only what was relayed to me. You'll still be able to have a good time either way. It's bout 90% American crew and 10% Foreign, American Flagged, and in American waters the entire duration. Whereas other lines I have experience with are like 99.6% Foreign and .4% American. Sailing under the Bahamian Flag and frequently in international waters.

I just did it. it's pretty extensive. First you have to either go to one of their Specific medical clinics. if you can't then you can buy the paperwork (they send me a link to get it) and take it to your family doctor or a walk in clinic that is able to do a "Seafarers medical exam". you have to get things like blood work, urin test, chest xray, EKG, dental work (can't have any cavitys or absests), as well as a pretty thorough exam. It Can take a couple of weeks depending on appointments and such.
