Thanks for the informative video. As far as days to maturity in terms of planting from seed. My experience is the actual harvest time is actually closer to days from germination rather than days from planting. I add 10 days to whatever is listed on the seed packet. Good tip on adding even more days because of less sun during the day in late summer and Fall.
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
The sunlight levels in the fall really do make a difference, so plant on those extra days. I agree, days to maturity really is days from germination, not planting.

I’m in zone 10a but we’ve been having a very mild summer 68-73 days and 50-55 nights. I think I’m willing to experiment on planting my brassicas and leafy greens early. But I’ll put them in a partially shaded area that only get 3-4hrs of direct sun. I’m very new and inexperienced but very willing to fail and learn 😊
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
3 - 4 hours of sun is not enough for broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage. Kale and Collards would do okay with that little light.

As always amazing video! I just palnted a mango seed outside and the little plant is about a foot long right now. And i replanted black pole beans and some are dying but some are starting to flower! How about watermelons? I got one plant growing (no fruits) and 2 others that are not growing but not dying either... just leaving them alone and see what happens. Im in zone 9 (central fl)
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
In Zone 9 you might still have a chance with some watermelon, but I would go with a smaller bush variety, maybe some thing like Sugar Baby.

I am in zone 9 and I just started my garden beds (2) end of May. When filling in empty spots do I need to do anything to the soil? Add anything? I also have them covered with SPF 50 screens which has really helped with our crazy heat. Thank you so much for helping me become a better gardener.

Thanks, I will try some parsley and cilantro tomorrow, because we need these greens a lot. I am a bit in doubt about Basil in Zone 7, may be give it a try
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
With Basil you will get some to harvest, but not nearly as much as you would have if planted a month ago. Something others have done is bring them inside when the weather gets cold.

fair visa It is slow to germinate, but grows fast! I’m in zone 7 myself and I plant basil in mid late July often with excellent results...

Thank you, I am in zone 5b, saw in August for fall harvest, can it be applied to my buckets garden too? I have started my brassica early last month as you said in your last video but they are still very very small compared to the ones you show in this video. Can I still plant them in my buckets and expect harvest?

Tomatoes and peppers should always be grown by transplant. Even in the warmer zones. You will have much more success if you get a larger plant in the ground to begin with.

@StoneyAcresGardening

Its a little late for carrots in zone 4. You could try some leafy greens like lettuce. Spinach, etc. But for zone 4 you will need to protect them with a cold frame or hoop house.

@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
Hmmm. . . White flies don't usually chew, they suck! If white flies are present you should be able to see the adults and nymphs feeding on the underside of the leaves. You can treat them with insecticidal soap. But you may want to look for other causes as well.
@StoneyAcresGardening

What about sunflowers in zone 6?
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
It's getting a little late for Zone 6. I would go with a smaller variety and give it a try. If it doesn't work, then you are only out a few seeds. Experimenting is part of the fun!!
@annestudley8235
@annestudley8235 4 года назад
These seeds are from my own past sunflowers, so it's hardly a dent in anything. They're mammoth sunflowers, so they probably won't get that far. I'm planting the biggest one because a friend who was weed whacking for me took out one of the 5 that I had strategically planted, and I thought I'd try again. And yes, this is a big experiment - we'll see how far it goes.
@jimsgardenproject3507

What about sowing / germination time. So 55 days +15+10?? Also if we are trying to stay ahead of the switch out that would require another 2-4seeks of growing time (before planting out)?? So In total about 100 days back from first frost date. Does this make sense? Or am I calculating too much. Trying to get a handle on when I should actually be sowing seeds for planting out as small plants ready to fill in the gaps. Thanks. Hope this makes sense.
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 года назад
For all of the cool season crops you are over thinking it. The 8 weeks before your frost date includes germination time. All of the cool season crops will stand up to frost so you don't need to worry about it. The only crops I would worry about that with would be beans, basil and cucumbers, you might want to account for some germination time with them.
