I'm completely new to all of this, bought a small 5x5x6.5 greenhouse and am making a raised bed tomorrow. The people at the local seed shop were pretty helpful but I don't think they were entertained enough to help a new person learn so here I am learning from RU-vid. I planted okra, chives, carrots, mint. I bought a pepper plant and a tomato plant and a buttercurnch lettuce plant. I almost killed it today I guess it was way to hot in the greenhouse and the water I gave it dried all up within 4 hours. Thank you for the videos you make will definitely appreciate a small series on getting started with a small bit of area. Thanks!
How exciting! Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening! Diving in is one of the best ways to start making progress. I love your idea for a series on starting small - adding it to my list of ideas now! I also have a video (coming the week after next) for some beginner greenhouse tips that you might find useful! And, if you have any questions, let me know - always happy and excited to help a new gardener get started on the right foot! ♥️
@@RootedRevival I just made my first bed yesterday and planted some onions and lettuce in it. Put chicken wire up and even tripled my amount of space that I can garden by moving to the edge of the property. I have 4 beds in my fenced area and have another area that is the same size but I'm going to grow larger things like okra and cucumbers as I think they will grow better with free range. I've been digging out the beds floor tons of grass and little garlic things and it's a lot of work. I'm debating on buying soil to build up the beds instead of digging down
Today I learned sweet potatoes can be considered a tropical crop that likes warmer soil! I had no idea and assumed they can be planted and managed the same as potatoes. Thanks for the new info!!!
It’s true! Sweet potatoes are in a completely different plant family even! And, unlike potatoes, the leaves are edible and nutritious (potato leaves are toxic though!). Sweet potatoes are quite fun to grow but they want that long warm season (110+ days).
Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening! I do my best to share all the things I wish I had known when I was first starting out and I’m so glad to hear that it’s helpful! 🥰
Hi Kaylee! Just subbed. Great video. I’m in 6b, but much farther south so our growing season is quite different. I like how you mentioned microclimates. We live in the bottom of a “holler”, so our season is about a week or two behind everyone around us.
Oh my gosh being raised and living my whole live in the Northwest, I've always wanted to know exactly what a "hollar" is! 🤣 Isn't it crazy though how different the weather can be from one area to another! Nature is truly fascinating to study and definitely never boring! Thanks so much for dropping a comment to say hi!
You did a great job making this applicable across zones. (9b AZ here😝)I am currently harvesting my tomatoes before the “dead zone” of June. I get a second warm season with the Monsoon in August.
Ah yes! I have heard about those! Isn’t it just crazy how growing varies SO much?! It truly makes so much more sense to garden based off of the season for this exact reason! Also, so jealous of your tomatoes but definitely not willing to brave the heat for them! 😂
Hi! New subscriber here (a couple weeks ago). And I was kinda hoping this video was a couple months old since you said you had a frost last night 😳. It's already in the upper 90s in Texas with heat indexes in the triple digits. 🥵😭🤦🏽♂️
Oh my! Yes isn’t it wild how different temps can be?! Even though areas of Texas are technically in the same USDA zone as us in the Pacific Northwest, the temps and seasons are completely different! This is why frost dates and understanding when your gardening seasons occur is a much more effective way to garden. I’m sure your “warm season” was in January or February! So crazy! Try to stay cool and I’ll try to stay warm! 😳
You definitely aren’t - but there are some key things that will help you see better success and higher production. Funny enough, I have a video planned for next week addressing this exact thing! In the meantime, here’s a blog post all about it and I also just posted a video today about 10 veggies that go from seed to production very quickly and all of them would be good options for you!
