shelley richard 3:10 PM (5 minutes ago) to RU-vid I cannot "THANK YOU" enough for reaching out to me. I have been making products (mugs/t-shirts. etc.) I am from NB Canada and doing this pretty much on my own. I am getting confused if I go I am close to 60 years of age but feel very young. I quit school when I was 16 and was involved with the wrong crowd. So after 40 years of very hard physical work. draining work, I decided it was time to go back to school and finish what I did not finish. I have NEVER quit anything in my life! I have a strong personality. I graduated!!! Then I decided to follow my dreams to help animals, so I had taken upgrading at the same time I am trying to finish my exam to graduate from grade 12 and start college the next day. Unfortunately, I didn't pass one evaluation and couldn't continue. I had to wait a year between if I choose to go back. College already cost me $30,000 dollars, If I choose to continue, in the end, it will be over $60,000 dollars, but again I am no quitter. My end game has been from the beginning to open an animal sanctuary, I can even see it and taste it. It is definitely my passion, my soul. I also have the most amazing, supporting, loving husband for almost 30 years., and still head over heels. He has always been there for me. Because of him, I was able financially to go to school as he paid the bills, I need now to repay him for all the years he has supported me and allowed me to find myself. I had gone through a depression when I didn't pass college and he allowed me to stay home and heal while again taking care of everything. I am great now and have meditated and refocused to start an online business while trying to work online to bring money in until I finish getting set up. I should be ready this week. I designed one mug about "amber turd". It's funny that I wish I had the funds to put it on the site where the trial is going on. I just wish I knew how and what it would cost. So sorry I didn't mean to overshare! I guess I trust you and I don't even know you/ But you have a rare quality, continue being you. I appreciate it once again. I’m one of those people who took that chance on a laser engraver back in 2016. It has paid off over and over again. I did have to get my first ever small business loan to pay for it (costs as much as a car!), but I never once have regretted getting it. I had my biggest year ever in 2020 and I think 2021 will be even better.

@@Bekind95 It is from a company called TYKMA in the Columbus, Ohio area. I have not had any issues in the 4.5 years of having my laser (Minilase). One time it needed a new part, but it was fixed quickly and only had about 24 hours of downtime. They have amazing customer service. That was one of the main reasons I went with them. There were cheaper options on the market, but they were being shipped from overseas and that was WAY too scary to me. It takes a LOT of patience and learning to run one. I can't imagine getting one and not having any guidance at all. They are an outstanding small company and are always willing to answer any questions I have had along the way. And to add to your comment, metal stamping is not a cheap start up unless perhaps you were to buy very few supplies and get sales before investing more. most stamping kits run around a 100 or more for a full starting kit and stamping sets 59 dollars and up.

Lots of solid information Kate, thank you. However, you may want caution when suggesting people make and sell sugar scrubs and body butters. Those must be made with quality ingredients. It scares me to think that some people will go out and get cheap essential oils (which can be toxic) and put them in scrubs/butters. I'm sure you know the importance of caution but infortunately not all viewers will. Thank you for the great tutorials and sharing your experiences.

Not sure this comment can be seen by you. But I'm helping an artist friend in China to sell His amazing mini-sculpture as necklaces. He really did an amazing job on the sophisticated carving on deer horn or olive seed, but maybe it's a little too exotic, people don't have things to compare to so our views are pretty low... not sure how can I attract customers. Is Etsy even an option for part time sellers looking to sell some products for some extra cash? I recently started making wooden spice racks. I have made improvements and have considered selling custom ones on Etsy. I have very little woodworking skills and tools. So I made them simple yet elegant and functional. I would probably also make some other food or kitchen related wood products since I love cooking.

For sure! Lots of people start Etsy as a side hustle and don’t want/need it to be anything more- that’s totally fine! Just make sure to do some trend/product to see what styles of your product are selling well on Etsy currently :)

Hi Kate, every thing you have said it's great and I thank you for sharing I started doing Tie Dye and heat press on clothing and more, I have also made wreaths, I have made wall decorations out of yarn, burlap, rope, you name it and I don't know what I am doing wrong. my sales are very, very, very minimum and it makes me sad that I cannot get any business, I have 2 printers, my heat press and cameo 4 just sitting there : ( I have sold a few items but no as much as I would like and have even thought of selling my equipment which I don't want to do but if there's no selling then I don't want them sitting there, can anyone give me some advise please.

For sublimation why not using a POD service? It's possible to link it directly to etsy shop and they will basically print for you and deliver

I want a laser cutter but they cost a lot. I sell jewelry supplies and I think it would be fun to make acrylic charms but there’s a lot of supplies sellers out there so I don’t know if I would sell enough.

Laser cutters are definitely a big investment! Maybe something that could be a goal for the future if you don’t have the budget for it right now. You could definitely cut acrylic charms on it- such a great idea! There are a lot of jewelry and jewelry supply sellers on Etsy but I look at that as a good sign that it’s a proven niche. If you can think of a design style that’s a bit different and puts your own twist on it, you can definitely stand out!

I'm planning on getting my etsy open by mid- January this month (I'm doing a blend of crafty and nerdy notions and jewelry)! Question though, when do you start dropping holiday oriented items, like Valentine's day for example? I really would like to be ready for Valentine's day because I think a lot of my items would make great Valentine's day gifts :)

Like how to brand my shop and products (I keep changing it because, I'm not sure if it's good enough or professional looking) how to package and ship my products, developing a production schedule, etc... I totally know that feeling! There are so. many. things. I’d say that it’s wonderful to research and do what you can to start strong but don’t get to the point of perfectionism because it will just delay the whole process! Start with what you’ve got and improve here and there along the way. I’m much more in favor of just starting rather than having everything perfect first 🥰

There’s no magic number but I would try for 10 at a minimum. The more you can get up the better as long as they are QUALITY! :)

It’s subjective and varies from shop to shop I suppose. We also own an Etsy jewelry business and our supply costs are much less expensive than our wreath supplies. There are many types of jewelry so it varies greatly!

It’s important to research the specific liabilities associated with what products you sell in relation to your city, country, or region. There are some products that it probably is not needed to invest in liability insurance and some that are. We can’t really tell you for sure. One option if your shop is small is to invest in making your business a LLC or Corporation. This way, the business and its assists are the only thing liable in the event of a lawsuit.

Hey Anna! You don’t have to trademark your designs but it might not be a bad idea if you can afford it. Having your designs trademarked just gives you protection from others stealing and using your work. There’s lots of good info about trademarking on legalzoom.com!

Hi there! I don’t know much about plaster planters but I’d recommend doing some research to see if others are having success with them on Etsy. Do a search for them and study the results that come up. Do any say “bestseller”? Also look at the number of sales the shops selling them have. This will give you a good idea.
