Everyone is pretty familiar with the term "smith" and I'm guessing most people think "blacksmith" when they hear the word. Which is all wonderful, and I'm the first to say blacksmiths rock (my uncle is one - has been for 30 years, full-time!).
This video outlines the tools of the soft metal trade, though. What tools did a traditional tinsmith and coppersmith use? What was in their shop? It's more than just a tinner's anvil and a few stakes. By the early 1800s, a full-fledged tinsmith or coppersmith shop would have had a lot of cast hand-crank machines to expedite making wares, whether that was cookware, lanterns, mugs, or plates.
This is a quick tutorial of my shop in terms of vintage tools and equipment and what each piece is called. I'll have more videos on how each machine is used (both traditionally and now in a more "modern" sense with updates to help make the use even faster for more bulk production) soon, but for now, this is your vocab and your tour!
Enjoy the walk through the garage, and please let me know any questions you have about any of the tools below!
