my socket solution is diy, I have scrap wood with appropriate sized holes drilled in it for each socket in the set,(EX: 1/4" drive sae is one set), and the whole block of wood fits inside an old sock, with the sock labeled which set it is. i just pick out the right set, pull the sock off, and select the socket. all my ratchets live in one leg off a old pair of jeans that had one end sewn shut. its cheap and has been working for the past 5 years.

I love it Harry..! Excellent video..! I added a bolt in base for my biggest Milwaukee stack box to lock down on my Jeep bed floor, and carry bright orange tool bags inside. Great video..!

Hey, Toyota Land Cruiser 80 1996 or Wrangler TJ-LJ 2006 ?
@HarrySituations
@HarrySituations 3 года назад
I’ve been fortunate enough to own both. The Land Cruiser was definitely better built and had more storage space but it wouldn’t fit on the trails I take the LJ on. I’d say LJ for one or two people but if you have kids or dogs the space of the 80 Series is really nice.

Awesome video man, this makes me want to see a video on trail repairs someday. One question, you mention you've seen people weld a wrench to a control arm or a tie rod to make it off the trail, but what kind of welder do you pack up and haul onto the trail? The only thing I can think of is maybe a Ready Welder?
@HarrySituations

Ready Welder or Premier Power Welder for trail work.

On the trip in the cover photo, carrying Ned and Paul along just in case was a good choice!

Great video! I like the Ares socket rails. Metal rail, plastic clips with ball bearings. Pretty tough, kind of expensive, but they've worked much better for me than other rails, especially the sheet metal Harbor Freight style. I also like to carry one of those plumber's grabber things in addition to the magnet, since some of my parts are aluminum, and sometimes the magnet sticks to everything except what you want it to, or isn't quite strong enough.

I usually bring one to races or with my trailer but don’t bring one on the trail.

Great info Harry! Personally i love tool rolls, and specifically the ones without seperate pockets. When layed out you can see all your tools and easier see what options you have for fixing the problem at hand. Afterwards, when the problem is fixed i often realize "oh yea, i did have that other thing in the car, why didn´t i think of that?" and laying everything out on the ground often help me see the solution more clearly in a stressful situation. Anyways, love the video!

On the LJ you maybe able to cut the socket rack in half and put them in that bag I usually use black tape around the sockets on a rack to keep them from popping off

My plan for sockets once the plastic holder they came with breaks is those magnetic socket trays. Just a plastic beam with socket sized holes in it and then get held in with a magnet. No idea how well it'll work but they aren't expensive so might as well find out.

I have those in my roll off box at home but the ones I have seen seem bulky for a trail bag.

I now run Ernst mfg locking socket rails in both of my tool bags as well in my tool box. They hold everything from in place on the rubicon or Moab or high speed in Baja. I use the classic craftsman black and red big bag for my diesel and jk and an atlas 46 Yorktown roll up in the raptor for Baja and Johnson lane to Hawthorne type loops.

Awesome video yet again Harry. Im sharing this with my brothers and Dad so I'm not always the one coming to the rescue with the tools! haha I use these socket holders in individual 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" tool bags. www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-Aluminum-3-8-in-Drive-Socket-Storage/50149620 I definitely learned a bunch from you on things I probably don't need if I think about it, and different ways to hold all the tools! Thanks!

Harbor Freight sells an item called a wrench ring, I use them to store 3/8 drive sockets. Works great for anything 10mm or bigger. A speed wrench is a huge help when you have to remove a lot of bolts or nuts, re-placing a birfield for example. Along those lines a magnetic parts tray is incredibly useful to keep from loosing all those small bolts and cone washers.

I use little plastic salsa containers because I am cheap, but I definitely hate losing hardware!
