Erasmus - whose Textus Receptus is what the KJB is based upon - believed that 1 John 5:7 was a forgery! Erasmus excluded 1 John 5:7 from his first and second editions of the Textus Receptus. He only included it in his third edition due to outside pressure. Erasmus, in his own words, explained on several occasions what had led him to include this passage in his third edition. He did so “so that no one would have occasion to criticise me out of malice” [Erasmus first apology against Stunica ed Clericus tom. IX col. 353 E] The conservative biblical scholar F.F. Bruce explains the history of how 1 John 5:7 was added to Erasmus' Greek text: The words ["in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth."]. When Erasmus prepared his printed edition of the Greek New Testament, he rightly left those words out, but was attacked for this by people who felt that the passage was a valuable proof-text for the doctrine of the Trinity. He replied (rather incautiously) that if he could be shown any Greek manuscript which contained the words, he would include them in his next edition. Unfortunately, a Greek manuscript not more than some twenty years old was produced in which the words appeared: they had been translated into Greek from Latin. Of course, the fact that the only Greek manuscript exhibiting the words belonged to the sixteenth century was in itself an argument against their authenticity, but Erasmus had given his promise, and so in his 1522 edition he included the passage. [F.F. Bruce, History of the English Bible, Oxford University Press, 1978, pages 141-142] A KJV-only position is not tenable because there were different editions within the KJV which are clearly different. If such people have no issue with updates to the KJV then why stop there, why not continue to update it based on more recent manuscript discoveries which is exactly what newer version like the NIV, RSV etc do (and they reject!). It's a self contradictory position to hold.
