Curtiss I appreciate everything you. And I definitely appreciate all you said to me and my buddies in London at the Airbit retreat. However, the one thing that’s been bugging me that I haven’t seen you make yet is how to make my beats louder without clipping. That’s been driving me crazy I can make my beats loud but it starts clipping and sounds distorted is it possible to just use stock plugins in FL Studio? Or do I need to invest in different plug ins? Hopefully u can make a video on this topic. Anyway take care!

Everything Curtis is saying here is facts. I realized this yearsssss ago when the first artist I ever worked with, I showed him a catalog of my beats and he picked something I did in 10 min. Literally a beat with a basic drum pattern and an 808. Only thing he wanted extra was some drum fills and an outro. Easiest $200 dollars I ever made.

bro thats true. less is more. mostly we complex our creatures (including myself) cuz we dont hear it from an artistic way (singer). When you create simply but catchy melodies an artist can have millions of ideas how to make that beat a great song.

I think the reason why simple sells more is because rappers/singers are either not creative enough to write to those beats, too lazy to put forth the effort in writing to it or just plain don't want to. This is coming from a rappers perspective. I like heavy instrumentation personally.

Absolutely agree with this point! My first beat sale is the one I spent about 1 hour on LOL There's literally 3 instruments on it. Interesting aspect indeed. I learnt that you have to learn to give tbe singer/rapper space to breath and express their melodies/rhythm 🤗 Thanks Curtiss! Here's to more music and success for 2019, let's go!

Your first point about simple beats selling is spot on.If it’s mixed well, and the kick and 808 knock, people will go with the stripped down type over crazy produced beats 9 out of 10 times. Although it is nice when your beats that you added a lot to also sell!

I've been out of the game for a while so all these Gems are greatly appreciated. When I was doing music previously though I was rarely had a chance to finish tracks from a beatmaker standpoint because I was co owner of an Indie label but I was the beatmaker and mix engineer so artist were literally scooping up every loop as fast as I could make them so I could never just make beats I would sculpt the track around what they came up with. However I know that level of involvement is not an option and so after a 15 yr hiatus I am enjoying just making beats but I am also seeking the best way to monetize what I am doing. Mr. King's videos have been a great help.

So true, I am so guilty of that too, recently I try to do beats with more space for the artist. It's funny though, how some producer will accuse me of beeing lazy for that lol, but it's true, I had it soooo many times, that artists loved a beat but couldn't imagine themselves on it. The stripped down beats mix better. A beat with a few instruments in it will sound really crispy. Mustard gained success off of simple beats like this. And when I scroll thru beatstars to freestyle on the way home, it's always the beat with one mid-range sound over it doing the melody.

a vocal is a big instrument, especially when they decide to layer it with harmonizing adlibs + autotune/reverb/delay so if i got too many instruments doing different things (not layered stacks of the same melody) in my beat its gonna fight the vocals

I always wonder if I should go into one direction or keep producing hip hop, trap, pop, rnb... DOES VERSATILITY AFFECT POSITIVELY or NEGATIVELY YOUR BRANDING??
@LMarquee
@LMarquee 5 лет назад
A lot of people will tell you to find a niche and stick with it. For example, if you're into boom bap, mostly make boom bap, if you're into trap, mostly make trap, etc. That works for some people, but for me personally, I love so many different styles of music, so I make multiple different styles of music. My customers constantly tell me that they love my versatility. The trick is, find what works for you. If I only did trap, or if I only did EDM, I wouldn't have the customers that I have. Experiment. As long as you make quality beats in all of those genres, you'll be good to go.
@cam105
@cam105 5 лет назад
I think staying versatile is the way to go because there’s many different types of artists out here who want your beats . Finding your sound is more about your melodies , sound selection, drums etc than picking a genre . For example, Timbaland is a legendary hip hop producer but also legendary in RnB . Though the two genres are different he has a unique sound he can apply to any genre. Much like Pharrell also, just find your style bro .

Creating space in the track is important for every instrument. Rapper's need to see themselves as another instrument. I've noticed talented wordsmiths like a challenge to destroy a beat that is so good it's listenable as just an instrumental. However, I'm aware that not every rapper is gifted enough to write to anything so you gotta be versatile.
