What type of helmet do you use and why? Do you have any suggestions for people looking for a new helmet? 👇

I've got a troy lee designs A3 - I ride trails on my neuron:ON 8 and it was the most comfy helmet they had in the shop...it's very important to try them on imo...

I'm looking for a convertible helmet. Right now I lean towards Bell Super Air R (very lightweight) or the Sweet Protection Arbitrator. Riding in so many different locations so I want "one helmet to rule them all"!

Full face all the way. I've seen far too many skilled riders in half lids eat it and smash their faces. Not everyone wants to have Sam Pilgrim's distinctive look :)

After breaking my jaw in three places a couple of years ago on a down hill trail I recently bought a Bell super Dh convertible helmet. Costly but what a helmet, awesome protection it’s also DH certified. I carry the chin bar on my back pack when normal trail riding and climbs then clip it on before going mad down hill. Would totally recommend, you can’t put a price on your head 😃

I use an IXS Trigger FF. I was using a Boardman MTB half helmet for a long time but after two crashes, one where a tree root almost took my jaw off, I decided on getting the FF. I now wear that helmet everywhere from trails to the canal, love it!

Good video! I went with full face recently after figuring it was not very smart to skimp on protection on the fragile face area. Finding the right helmet was not easy though, so I went through a lot to try. Here's a quick review that maybe will help someone: Bell Super Air (R) with the optional removable chin guard: this was my original helmet (non R version) so I purchased the chin guard later (only available in black when purchased later). It felt incredibly unsafe on my head since the MIPS allowed the helmet to slide about way too much, and it could even be twisted so much forward that it was a strangulation risk from the chin strap (it pushed on my throat). Maybe it is down to the fit and my head, but I would not recommend the Bell convertible helmets. Fox Proframe: nice fit, sits securely on the head, but it felt warm and also looked huge on the head. Endura MT500 Koroyd fullface: the Koroyd tubes are like a cheese grater against the head. I honestly think that it would rip my scalp off in case of a crash. Koroyd tubes might make mechanical sense as impact protection, but I think it needs some inner liner between them and the head. Leatt DBX 4.0 Enduro convertible: Fit was not nice on my head (I'm pretty wide/square on the top part) and it felt very hard and unpadded. Leatt DBX 3.0 fullface: Awesome and secure fit, vision is not impaired, good ventilation when warm, lightweight. Negative is that the peak is not adjustable so goggles will not stay up. But this is a small thing considering all else, and this is now my main helmet. 8/10, would buy again.

I always wear a full face on an ebike. Last week I had my first major crash on my YT Decoy. The trail I wrecked on was a trail that I had ridden 45 times according to Strava. It was a gnarly crash at about 15 mph on a mild section, though it's on the side of the mountain. The edge of the trail literally gave way from under me and I was thrown over the bars and down in a gulley into the rocks. Elbow pad was completely ripped off, got a contusion in my calf and still can't feel it 5 days later. Scrapes and bruises all over me and made a trip to the ER. Had I not had a full face on I can't imaging what my face and teeth would look like today. Don't skimp on protection, it's not wise.

I had a scary crash today when the side of the trail collapsed and my bike folded over and I went head over the bars, my Fox full face hit the ground first, snapped the visor off and smacked the helmet into a rock...so no trip to the ER. Took a few minutes to compose myself and put my gear back together and repair the trail edge and off I went. Needless to say I am a fan of the full face helmet, even more so today.

I used to race bmx 30+ years ago and we used to wear an open face with a "mouth guard" that clipped onto the helmet. They don't seem to make them like that anymore. It's either an open or full face. I know there's the safety argument but the option of a clip on "mouth guard" is better than just an open face.

I just got a Smith Mainline full face. Just started doing bigger jumps and drops, and saw a pic of a friend’s helmet, dented on top, side, and jaw. I took the hint. Still have a TLD A2, which I might use for easier trails in summer.

Somebody really needs to add the ability to put tactical headsets on the bike helmets or just open two big holes around the ears on the full face helmets. What's the reason for no doing this? Urban riding in Los Angeles is really like riding on a mountain bike trail through war zone and could use the extra hearing help.

Normal MTB helmet for me since I don't ride very fast or jump. But if I start doing gnarlier stuff I'll just wear my enduro helmet since I ride trail motorcycle as well. Don't see the point on spending more money on FF MTB helmet when enduro ones you can get decent one for 60-80€. Same thing for the back protection, motorcycle ones are way cheaper than the MTB "special" or hype ones.

I found my open face 4Fourty MIPS Bell helmet to be absolute rubish and used it maybe a dozen times. I wished I had looked at some forums before and I had handed over cash. The helmet was fitted, adjusted and purchased from a local dealer bike shop. The Issue was that going down slightly rough XC descents the helmet would roll forward over my eyes at the worst possible times and regularly even though it is the correct circumference the rear adgustment is done up tight and the straps tighten up. The problem in not the MIPS system as other brands don't get the same complaints, but the design of the rear adjustable cage. It does not go down far enough. Looking at the forums and checking with local facebook MTB groups the complaint is common and frequent. Basically everyone is of the same opinion. Forget about Bell helmets as it appears not to be limited the just open face design.
@kiltymacbagpipe

Strange that can’t be adjusted lower. Sounds like a design flaw. I bought a helmet from smith, at the low end of the price range, and it didn’t fit right until I realized I could I unclip the back section to lower it. Once it did it really hugged my head and always stays put.
@richardkaz2336
@richardkaz2336 3 года назад
@@kiltymacbagpipe There is a 4 position adjustment that allows the back ratchet band to lowed or raised. In it's fully raised position 1 and the ratchet strap tighten it does not grip at all and you can pull a strapped on helmet off easily. In it's fully extended position 4 and tightened it feels secure but the slightest tilt forward and it will roll off. If you unclip the 4 position adjustment then the helmet becomes totally unstable and is only held by the thin flimsy ratchet stral and chin strap. I hve some cheaper helmets That comply with Australian safety standards one of the toughest in the world and the have better designed rear adjustment ratchet bands and sit better and do not have the problem the Bell 4Fourty has. They just don't have MIPS. I would not recommend unclipping that rear clip.
@kiltymacbagpipe
@kiltymacbagpipe 3 года назад
@@richardkaz2336 I should have said I unclipped from one position and re-clipped into a lower position. I’m not recommending using the helmet in an unsafe way.
