ZoysiaSod.com - This is what gets me excited, this crazy awesome Zoysia Grass. So Brokers Quality Turf Grass is where I buy a ton of my grass. If you buy a, you know, need a square or two or one pallet, and you're doing it yourself, this is where you'll want to come as well. But they're crazy about Zoysia Grasses too. And there's a lot of different types and varieties of Zoysia Grasses. My favorite is the Zeon and the Palisade Zoysia. But checkout all the types of Zoysia they're carrying over here. We're just going to go down the line, okay?
So, this is called El Toro, it's a medium blade grass. If you get a close up look over here, you can tell that it's a medium blade grass, as opposed to right here, is some called L1F. This is the like a dwarf fine blade. Stinking beautiful. I know there's a couple of weeds in here, but if you just look at how short this stuff is. This is some sick looking, awesome fine blade dwarf grass.
Next, we have Crowne Zoysia. Crowne Zoysia is another medium blade grass. And you can see Palisades, this is what we usually buy. So Crowne and Palisades, you can't even tell the difference. I'll have to look at the specifics on the specs of why, you know, the two different grasses. But Palisades is by far our number two seller, next to Zeon. And Zeon's right here. So, this is a fine blade grass that we sell the most of.
So, you see this Zeon. Let's go back and compare this Zeon to the L1F over here. L1F, that's a different name, I wonder if that's the same as Trinity Zoysia Grass. So take a close up look at this grass right here. Okay, this is our number one seller, Zeon Zoysia. And we ... A lot of people cut this stinking short. It's beautiful grass. Come over here again and look at this L1F. A real close up look at my hand down here and see that? It's a fine blade, but it's really dwarfy. I'm going to have to talk to these people about this. And see if this is like closer to that golf course, green looking stuff. I've got to check thi ... I got to learn more about that grass. And then ...
So then, you've got Emerald Grass right here. So, Emerald Grass kind of looks like the Zeon Grass. We used to install a lot of Emerald Grass, but we noticed that when you put a little fertilizer down, this stuff thatches up a lot. And it looks beautiful. But for just the purposes of that thatch, we quit installing it. Because when you got a lawn that's heavy in thatch, it's really hard to mow. So, we stay away from that.
Now, another awesome grass is the Cavalier Zoysia, over here. So, we've installed quite a few lawns of Cavalier. But if I had to pick between Cavalier and Zeon, I'm always going to go with Zeon. So, this is ... You probably won't be able to tell the difference. In fact, I can't even tell the difference. If I'm looking at a Cavalier lawn and a Zeon lawn, they look pretty much the same. The color is a little bit darker on the Zeon, but the thing is, it's a little bit heartier too. So, I'm going to go with Zeon every single time, even though Cavalier looks freaking stinking beautiful. Zeon just has a tiny bit more advantage over that Cavalier, from what I've seen.
And then you've got Empire, which I've never installed. I don't know anything about. This patch is just riddled full of weeds, but don't, don't take that into consideration too much. This is just a little sample patch they have up here. But, it's been abused up here. This is not, not something that is taken care of like your home lawn would be. But yeah, it's a nice, awesome ... It looks like a very short growing medium blade grass.
So, lots of stuff to learn about. Maybe if we go to blade runner farms, they're going to have some more sample bedding areas like this. And we can see some more stuff. So, right now, I'm most curious about this L1F. So, that's a sick looking Zoysia. I don't know what the growth characteristics are as far as shade, drought tolerance, and you know, just density and stuff like that. Ease of maintenance. I'm gonna learn a lot more about that and teach you guys about that when I find ou

FYI: We live on Amelia Island Florida. Hurricane Nicole covered our Zoysia lawn with 24" of Ocean surge for 24 hours in November 2022. We watered the area twice a day once the salt Ocean water receded. The Zoysia was not damaged! Needed to be mowed by Mid April. I fertilized with a liquid fertilizer in Early May. Here we are June 1, and the lawn looks great.

In Australia, Empire Zoysia is also known by it’s botanical name of Zoysia Japonica. It is medium green fine leaf turf that is best suited to warm or tropical climates. Some features include drought tolerance, less watering, disease resistant and retention of full colour all year round. I mow my lawn with a cylinder mower and can cut low to a golf green appearance. Zoysia’s are the best looking grass. 👍

There are 3 base types of Zoysia. One is from Japan, one from Malaysia, and the other from the Philippines if memory serves me. From there they mixed these together many ways to create these different cultivars of Zoysia. If it can be planted from seed, it has a larger part of Zoysia Japonica as that's the only base Zoysia that produces seed. The other two can only be spread by plugging or taking stolons and partially burying them and allowing them to take root and spread. I've not done that myself, so I may be misinformed or misquoting. There was one guy I saw do his entire lawn this way. It was an interesting video. He took pictures every few days to show the progress as each row of stolons took root and started to establish and spread. I wanted to go with a seed and ended up going with Zenith Zoysia. I don't recall why I chose that over Emerald, but maybe it had to do with the thatch generated by one over the other? I love my Zoysia though. It's pretty easy to keep it weed free. Last fall I got busy and did not put down any pre-emergent, and this spring I had weeds popping up. I sprayed some Q4 and SpeedZone and that killed almost all of it, but when I cut it down to 1 inch (about 3 cm) for a few days as it was coming out of dormancy, that low mowing took out the rest of it.

not sure what kind of Zoysia I have, looks like medium blade. Anyways, I missed the window for PE, way to hot now in central Florida. Being sandy soil and have quite a few bare spots, I want to reseed. Is it good timing right now and should I add top soil prior?
@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 4 года назад
instead of reseeding, why not buy a plugging tool and take plugs from established areas and fill in the bare spots? Fill in the holes with a top soil that has a starter fertilizer in it and they will fill in quickly, and the plugs should spread 6-12, maybe 18 inches depending on the quality of soil and amount of sunlight, and the type of Zoysia. Just check some Zoysia sites and see what they recommend for a watering schedule for plugs. If you haven't had a soil test done recently, get one. It's not difficult or expensive, and it will allow you to give your Zoysia the best chance of growing and spreading to fill in the bare spots. I planted Zenith Zoysia last fall (bad weather made me late), and that's my plan to fill in many of my bare spots. I had a sprinkler failure that I'll need to reseed that section, but the rest I'll plug.

I am used to Zeon Zoysia grass since my parents had this on their front yard lawn and outside on the lawn on the sidewalk area . I really like zoysia but I think Zeon Zoysia grass would be best from my backyard since it is doesn't get direct sunlight during the day and it is shaded and tents to have moss growing in it. I want a fresh start on my backyard lawn and front yard lawn that wouldn't need alot of watering and very dense to keep out the weeds.

@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 4 года назад
I may be corrected by a professional, but I think the Z52 is Meyers Zoysia which was introduced first (or almost first) in the USA maybe 75 years ago. There are three main types of Zoysia and the strain from Japan can actually be grown by seed, and the other two cannot and have to be put down by SOD or plugs, which Meyers/Z52 does as well. These types of Zoysia in the video are hybrid mixes of two or more other primary strains of Zoysia that give different qualities such as cold resistance, drought resistance, blade size/thickness and so on. I've seen several lawn care professionals ranging from lawn maintenance to golf course maintenance to horticulturalist in colleges saying Zoysia is their favorite grass, and either that is what they have in their own lawn, or it is what they wish they had in their lawn but do not because of inadequate sunlight, or maybe they rent? They didn't go into detail, but it is a great grass if you have the right amount of sunlight. I planted Zenith Zoysia from seed in my lawn last year and it did great. I wish I'd have gotten it down earlier so i'd have had a longer first growing season, but it will fill in this year. I have one spot I'll need to kill off winter weeds and reseed because of a sprinkler failure and the seed lings dried out during germination, so that entire area is dead. The rest of the lawn is greening up now here in Central Virginia, and has been for the past few weeks so it will crowd out a lot of the weeds and I'll be able to put down some pre-emergent herbicides this fall to knock out winter weeds next winter so when my Zoysia wakes up from dormancy next year, it will have minimal weeds.
@Troy-Echo
@Troy-Echo 4 года назад
W Jack, I went to Ron's channel and watched that video. You have a very nice looking lawn for certain! Where are you getting your information that Meyers wasn't introduced that long ago? Frank Meyer was found dead floating in a river in 1918, and he was credited with bringing Zoysia to the US. I was aiming more towards the 1951 introduction of the USGA, although that was almost 45 years after Zoysia was brought back to the US by Frank Meyer.From the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture website:Meyer zoysiagrass was released jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Golf Association Greens Section in 1951. It was tested throughout much of the country under the trial name of "Z-51", a designation it has been slow to shake. The original plants were grown from Korean seeds collected in 1930. The Korean site where the seeds were collected was along the Yalu River and was first identified by USDA plant explorer Frank Meyer who visited the site in the spring of 1906.Source: www.uaex.edu/yard-garden/resource-library/plant-week/meyer-z52-zoysiagrass.aspxFrom the Clemson EDU website:Zoysia japonica: This particular species was introduced into the United States in the late 1800’s and is commonly called Japanese or Korean lawngrass. I have a backyard full of Meyer zoysia that is struggling due to some shade in areas. I'd like to plug it with some Zeon zoysia, but will the Zeon overtake the Meyer? I've read that Zeon will overtake other grasses, but what about overtaking a different type of zoysia?

Zeon grows about 2x faster than Meyer. I have Meyer in front and Zeon out back They also have different color, blades, not a good match.

Hey I am not sure what grass would go well in your area. We install grass in Dallas Fort Worth in North Texas
@Troy-Echo

Zenith Zoysia should grow well there. With pretty much any Zoysia though you'll have 5-6 months of dormancy. If you have a pre-emergent down in the fall you'll have a nice consistent golden brown lawn until the grass comes out of dormancy in the spring, which would be late March to early April. Or you could overseed with an annual Ryegrass (which many people do) which will give you green growth over the winter, and the ANNUAL Rye will die off and the Zoysia will green up and take over as the rye dies off for the summer. I'm just south east of Richmond, VA and my Zenith Zoysia started greening up 2-3 weeks ago. You can grow Zenith from seed, which is the cheapest option. You absolutely need to start with a soil test. If your pH is that far off and you don't have the right nutrient levels, your growth will be reduced. You need 1 pound of Zenith Zoysia seed per 1,000 sq. ft., and the seed is very tiny. I had an ant hill in my newly seeded lawn and the ants had picked up about 1/8 to 1/4 ounce of seed and put it around the bottom of their ant hill which cracked me up...yeah, the seed is that small. I used a Scotts Wizz handheld spreader because almost everything else is made for much larger seed or fertilizer, and you want maximum control of your seed and I think that's the best choice. I bought my Zenith Zoysia seed on Amazon from Super-Sod and they were prompt to answer my questions in e-mail. They sell 2 and 6 pound bags typically. Here is a video of the first 51 days of growth of Zenith Zoysia - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jDPmuh0d18k.html. As long as your soils tempts are 60+ consistently and your soil is in good shape, you are good to plant the seed. I'd try to put the seed down at least 90 days before the first frost which is probably the middle of October for you. If you go much past that your grass will not be established enough to put down a pre-emergent and you'll end up with winter weeds while the new grass is dormant. I'm dealing with that now because bad weather forecast forced me to put my seed down about the first week of September (30+ days after I planned on planting), and I had 100% bare soil so I didn't really have much choice at that point. I was very happy with the growth I had last fall though, even though I was late planting. I work from home 100% of the time and my window faces my Zoysia, so it's nice to see a nice lawn versus undesirable grasses and weeds. I have several spots of bunching tall fescue I need to kill with glyphosate or dig up and replace the soil, but I think 2, 4D and Quinclorac will take care of the bulk of my weeds, and the Zoysia will fill in and crowd out most of the others. If I'd planted earlier and been able to put down a pre-emergent herbicide though, 95% of the weeds would be gone, so don't be scared off by my weed issues. if you plant in the spring, you won't have nearly as many weeds as I did.

@@WJTM88 So glad I could help WJTM88! Hopefully the only fever you all are experiencing is cabin fever! I have family that live in Ashburn and they are going a bit stir crazy. I cannot stress how important a soil test is. It's like a physical before starting anything athletic. As I write this my lawn is looking SO MUCH BETTER! I had a substantial amount of bare spots when my lawn started to green up, but a lot of the bare spots still had very immature Zoysia in the soil and most of it still recovered from my late planting and winter and things are looking so much better. I put down my fertilizer almost a month ago that was a 16-4-8 + iron, which the iron gives you a deeper and richer green if your lawn has an iron deficiency, which mine did. I had several darker green stripes where I slightly overlapped my spreader application which just cracked me up. My daughter's 10th birthday is close so although I wanted to wait until July for the next spoon feeding of my lawn, I went a little early and put down a bag of Ironite, at a lower rate than they called for, but I also put down Milorganite which has some nitrogen and after I got home and read the bag closer, I saw it had some iron in it as well so I knew I should be in good shape. Four days later with daily watering for the new seed in my bare spots and the ironite and milorganite have already made a big difference and the stripes of green have filled in and the growth has been boosted. The weed growth has been phenomenal, but again, I haven't put down any pre-emergence type herbicides so any weed seeds that are in the soil or blowing over from neighbors or pooped in the lawn by birds will grow. My new secret weapon is downloading the "Google App" which has a feature that allows you to take a photo and it will scan the Google images and try to find a match, so if you don't know what a weed is, that's a great place to start. Although I'm not a fan of the "Scott's Lawn Care App", it does allow you to put in your zip code and it tells you how much rain you have had that week and how much you need to add, and although i do not buy Scotts products typically, you can put in the type of grass you have and it will suggest when you should put down fertilizer (go off the soil test, not the Scott's app), as well as things like pre-emergence herbicides and Grub-Ex for white grubs which eat the roots. If you are going to live there a while, I'd suggest putting down "Milky Spores" for grubs. it is more expensive up front because you have to put it down twice a year for 3 years, but milky spores is a bacteria that is harmless to humans and pets, but extremely toxic to white grubs. Every time a white grub eats one of these bacteria, the bacteria kills the grub and it creates a new bloom of billions of bacteria in the soil. Once established, milky spores give you something like 10-15 years of protection, so it is more work and more money up front, but if you will live there a while, it is worth the money and effort. If not, Grub-Ex seems to work well. Also, when you are putting down your pre-emergence herbicides, remember to rotate the herbicide you use ever 1-2 years so you don't get a resistance. Look up "Pest and Lawn Ginja" and he has several great videos on pre-emergence herbicides. He is also one of the few lawn care video providers that doesn't take 5 minutes of information and turn it into a 20 minute video. he keeps it on point and it is usually fairly easy to understand. One of his videos goes over Prodiamine in depth (a pre-emergence herbicide), and why he puts it down earlier than most people, and another he has several types of pre-emergence herbicides (bags and bottles) on his cement driveway and he goes over each set one by one, tells how long they are good for and so on. If you plan on treating your own lawn versus paying someone, he has a lot of great content.
