What VR in EA WRC ACTUALLY looks like

My first drive in VR in EA SPORTS WRC! Using their recommended graphics settings for my specs as per their Steam post, I’ll let you be the judge of this actual unedited in-game VR footage. Of course this is a desktop recording and hard to convey what it’s actually like inside the headset, but the graininess and artefacts you see here are definitely visible in VR too. A few stutters here and there also, especially with quick head movements and sharper corners. Full review to follow later this week.

Only a handful to be honest, I did a couple of basic runs before trying VR to make sure controls were mapped properly and ffb was dialled in, but not much more than that. Plenty more still to try 😎

Nice! Is this what the desktop is _actually_ showing when you’re in VR(including during the menus)? Or is it like in DR2.0, where the monitor output is a bit broken?

Nope this is a direct capture straight from the desktop, not the oculus mirror 👍 EA WRC will display the VR view when driving but will switch back to a flat 2d protection fixed in place (regardless of head position) when you're in the menus. Also works for the replay too which is awesome, a nice compromise considering you still can't save a run in VR and play it back in pancake mode later.

Reminds me of when I first started recording/uploading on the channel many years ago and I'd spend twice as long playing with settings and finding the balance between getting it running smooth/looking nice than I would actually driving 😆

Hey Dan, does this not support OpenXR now ? I thought I read that it would run natively on it. This would make the performance and visuals much better with the use of Opencomposite. Thanks & Cheers

opencomposite crashes the game unfortunately. I have HP G2 and it keeps crashing with opencomposite. I close it and problem solved

Obviously it looks grainy when your VR output resolution is limited to 1080×1200 pixels per eye.. almost just half of what the quest 2 has. Also, it looks like you're using an upscaler? Have you tried applying SS instead?

I would agree, but I have a pretty solid reference point compared to other games I run in VR such as iRacing, AMS2, Assetto Corsa and so on. All of these look significantly better on the same headset so I'm making a direct comparison between them, not just looking at EA WRC in isolation, and unfortunately it just doesn't look that great at all. For sure a more modern headset would have better clarity but this suck up a lot more processing power due to the extra pixels and would mean even lower graphics settings to compensate. As for upscaling, nothing enabled as far as I'm aware and running supersampling at 125% 👍 any more than that and I start dropping a lot of frames.

They really had to crank up the fog (lower the draw distance) to get an "acceptable" frame rate. I wonder if that is a result of your settings specifically, or the state of the VR experience right now?

To be fair most settings are on low or ultra low and I'm barely scraping the required 90fps for my CV1 on a 3080 card 🤔 so read into that what you will. As far as I can see there's no specific slider to adjust draw distance although that's probably hard baked into a lot of the other settings by default, although in this case fog was also set to ultra low.

VR is the only way to really get in to rallying. difference is one of the biggest a racing game has ever had. Go VR and you will see

Absolutely agreed! I don't do any racing or rallying without VR on the channel for exactly that reason 😉 the difference it makes is huge in terms of spatial awareness and being able to 'feel' what the car is doing, especially in rally as you're often not facing the direction you're travelling in. Being able to rotate your head and keep your vision fixed on the direction of travel and then have the car rotate around your head is invaluable for judging the amount of slide.

Super easy, it's implemented by default in the game with the most recent update 👍 after the intro plays there's an option to enable your headset

It's a little counter intuitive to be honest. You start the game as you normally would through Steam and then once the intro has finished (or been skipped 😉) a message comes up in-game asking if you would like to enable VR. For some reason it's not like the vast majority of other games which give you a pop up launch option when you press Play in Steam.

Unfortunately not, someone else in the comments section here has tried but said it crashes the game.

@@DDFRacer I got it working with no crashes. You just can't use any upscaling (In the game or in Open XR). Unfortunately it doesn't look any better and the gains are minimal so hopefully they improve it over the next few months. They should definitely hire some experienced VR coders or the same guys that did DR2 cause this is bad.

I'm already running as much super sampling as I can manage without tanking my frames 👍 it doesn't seem like there's much wiggle room in terms of performance unfortunately. I would like to be hopeful too, especially considering this is technically only 'beta', but the performance and appearance of ACC in VR (which uses the same graphics engine) might be a good indicator of where this could potentially end up.

The driving itself isn't too bad at all, definitely don't feel as much weight in the car though compared to Richard Burns Rally which I'm used to from recent events. In terms of graphics and performance in VR, I'd say that EA WRC is more demanding than DR2.0 but without any benefits. Because of the UE4 engine, there are definitely some funky artefacts going on 🤔 overall the image looks more pixelated and fuzzier too, it's more difficult to see objects further in the distance. Also looks like the car interior is rendered and treated separately than the environment, especially in terms of foveated rendering. Plenty of settings to play with though 👍 no doubt I'll find some tweaks to make it look a bit nicer and run more smoothly

To be fair, EA did actually say this was a Beta feature 😉 but I completely get the point you're making. Hopefully they can improve on this and make it better with time, the underlying game itself is really good and being able to experience it in decent quality VR would see me sinking several hundred hours into it.

I would agree with you if I'd have recorded this footage physically through the lense but this is a direct capture from the game on my desktop monitor. If anything, running a CV1 would actually mean _better_ performance since I'm running at a lower resolution than more modern headsets and pushing less pixels through my GPU. What you're looking at is the image that EA WRC generates regardless of which headset is being used, the lower resolution is only something I can see inside my CV1 and my increased supersampling because of the extra headroom would have definitely cancelled that out on the recording. This is definitely a fair representation of what the game looks like 👍

I mean yeah, it'll certainly do 🤷‍♂️ no doubt it can be tweaked a little further though. I think the foveated rendering makes a big difference, EA suggest running it on the highest setting 3 but it really has a big impact on how pixelated the peripheral vision gets. I might try playing with that to see if it looks better and reduces artefacts without putting too much extra strain on the frames. Doesn't look like there's any kind of in game super sampling options either to help with the clarity.

@@socks2441 dirt rally had it nailed, dirt rally 2.0 definitely took a step back and felt like an afterthought...I can't disagree with you about EA WRC in VR either, although it is still technically 'beta' so hopefully it can be improved over time 🤞

i bought dirt rally 1 and loved it, bought dirt rally 2 and loved it. i will not buy this garbage. what a shame. this company used to make good games.

Ah, I just replied to your other comment about pretty much exactly the same thing 😅 but yeah, no big surprise that the same graphics engine from ACC is pumping out the same graphical quality in EA WRC too.

I thought that was an comment from me 😂 same thoughts about EA WRC and Codemasters. After 1 h of trying to set up my steering wheel and pedals I started dirty rally 1. Easy, this game doesn't care if the steering wheel and pedals are from different manufacturers. It looks good, the sound is awesome! And to navigate in the game is super easy. No bling bling like in EA WRC. Horrible . And this is improvement with unreal engine in 2024? Nope, it's really disappointing, the whole concept
