I think that in-universe at least, the designers & engineers have entertained the idea of making this thing a walker, until they realized how insanely difficult or impractical to do so given the sheer size of that thing. The tank needed to be fast & practical instead of outright scary after all.
It’s versatility was exceptional. Not only is it faster than most walkers. It had the firepower that could allow it to charge into the enemy head on smashing through defenses. It also could easily be a mobile command post or supply craft. The possibilities are endless
Mine too. It looked pretty badass when it fired its rockets at the approaching droid tanks during Episode III. I tend to wonder what Juggernaut training would be like. Was there any instance of a green juggernaut crew fighting each other on which direction they should drive the tank?
@@michaelandreipalon359 Same shit still happens. You'd need a reactor or engine so damn huge to constantly power the thing that space would be considerably sacrificed all the same.
I remember seeing this thing in the 90s in the first edition of the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels. I remember thinking how terrifying those things looked and I was blown away about 9 years later when the Revenge of the Sith came out in 05 and they'd adapted it to being in the clone wars. I believe it was called the HAV/6 Juggernaut and it was called the Turbo Tank for the Clone Wars.
I have to say that the main weakness of the Juggernaut (besides it’s inability to be stealthy or to maneuver) is inserting and exfiltration into and out of the theater of battle. The thing is so insanely massive, it dwarfs even a triple-trailer long haul semi truck IRL (which is about 38 meters in length and about 4.5 meters tall 2.5 meters wide, compared to the Juggernaut at 50 meters in length, 22 meters in height, and 19.6 meters in width).
It kinda makes sense as a defensive patrol vehicle. A column of these on prepared zones can react to any light vehicle incursions and threaten larger landing craft trying to assemble large formations ahead of slower defence units. Move in from depot to landing area, smash through the enemies rapid light columns with impunity, and reach their back artillery and supply zones to deploy infantry and light vehicles to wreak havoc and delay deployments while laying out heavy blaster fire on anything too big for infantry to handle. On the attack, yeah, hard to justify on anything less than a total planetary invasion where your marines have already secured a beachhead landing zone to deploy and supply from and roads are mostly secured and have air cover enough to allow them to move into position.
I'm wondering if the smaller cockpit lacked it's own communications officer, leaving two loaders and an engineer in the main section, with the astromech working closely with the engineer.
Originally designed by Joe Johnston in 1978 for Empire Strikes Back. Lucas sidelined them to use the AT AT walkers instead cos he wanted to see something new and pay homage to the Tri Pod Walkers from WOTW
I'm just imagining the Reds from Blood Gulch riding in that. "Still think it looks like a Puma?" "No this one I think looks more like a Hippo" "Grif! I told you to stop making up animals!"
Just read up on its lore in the Imperial Sourcebook by West End Games. Trusty vehicle, even if old (and looking a bit different as the eras went by). Love the The Emperor's New Groove reference in the timestamps, Geetsly's.
If my knowledge serves me correct, that clone major you mentioned in command of this tank, is the only position ever mentioned that a clone major fills in any of Star Wars lore
I feel the last 2 ambiguous crew members would not be replacement spotter because they were likely “unalived” rather frequently like the gunner for the mass-driver cannon on the AT-TE. So maybe the replacement spotters may have been just unlucky clones pulled out from the safety of the troop hold?
One of the people who made the AT-TE and the Juggernaut: Hey, should we put something up there to protect the exposed gunners on these models? A superior: Nah. I'm sure it will be fine. I mean how many times is someone going to be killed because of this? One of the people: I don't know, how many times has the exposed window on the bridge of every starship design caused someone's death? A superior: Oh come on, that doesn't happen too often. By our standards. Since there are trillions of being in the galaxy, so even if the numbers of casualties from these designs where in the 4 to 5-digit range it still technically wouldn't be that much.
Energy shields, people. R&D the kriff out of them! (So, you seen the trailers and other stuff, fellow blue-suited Federation Starfleet Twilight Sparkle clone?)
@@michaelandreipalon359 Yes We need more energy shields around here. (Yes I did and they were glorious. I am now even more excited for what's coming in 9 days. Also, nice new pfp. Also, also, it's actually UNSC armor, not a Starfleet suit).
I like the screenshot of the space engineers builds of them. It's been a while since I used any star wars builds of the work shop to just make cool space battles and stuff with. I remember a large grid one that was painted grey and was great to just drive around in shooting stuff. be it we only had missiles and Gatling guns back then for weapons so not super stars warsy for the weapons.
@@michaelandreipalon359 Toys of the Juggernaut could.not be sold under the name because of the Marvel X-Men Character having 1st copyright claim in the toys arena, legally speaking. So the Lego commercials and the product boxes, etc. All called it the Clone Turbo Tank.
Ah, I see, and I must say, it's a moronic idea even. Same for the "copyrighting" of the ballista siege weapon in a tabletop game (or a video game, I can't tell) whose name I can't mention.
@@michaelandreipalon359 Yes and No. There was a time when copyright was about protecting an artist's work from being stolen and used for profit by anither. Nowadays corporations abuse the system to an absurd degree.
It’s too big. Tanks and other similar vehicles aren’t fuel efficient for long-distance travel purposes, so they have to be moved by other means (frequently by rail). That means they have to be relatively small. Also, it’s a lot of resources in one vehicle- probably a better idea in most cases to spread those resources out across several vehicles, which can’t be taken out by one missile attack and can also be in many places at once.
When fusion reactors get smaller and better to armor, as well as more improvements to modern tank equipment, and solving the logistics problom, they definitely can, but not now
It never ceases to amaze me how Star Wars has such a complete and total lack of simple sensors, that would render stuff like the suicide-spotter totally pointless. It may be that, because there is an abundance of sensors there are equal and opposite jamming equipment, that would render sensors less effective. But that does little to really explain the lack of passive electronic surveillance sensors onboard ships and in bases, that is so often evidenced by the total impunity that a stealthy, and low-tech boarding (or otherwise intruding) party enjoys in basically every installment of the Star Wars franchise.
@@thestanleys3657 I ain't sure even in that department. On just regular rougher-than-usual terrain, wouldn't doubt that it'd be a smooth ride, but no one's gonna design & build something so massive & fast just to run on mere rougher terrain. I bet the kinda ground that this thing usually runs on would be reserved only for walkers in most cases. There's also the thing about being such a big fat target also means that it's gonna get shot at & have stuff blowing up underneath it just about all the time.
Honestly, this seems more like a giant armoured personnel carrier than a tank. Or perhaps a combined utility vehicle, since it also acts as a mobile command center as well. A tank is a _very_ specific type of vehicle, charaterised by having treads _not_ wheels and mainly being a heavily armoured gun platform. Sure this vehicle has guns - lots of them - but since it doesn't have one single "main" weapon which is the main focus of the vehicle - and the reason for it's very existence - it doesn't qualify as being a tank. Just because a vehicle is very big, very heavy and is heavily armoured _doesn't_ automatically mean it's a "tank".
Given that the HAVw-A6 was still in production and use by the Empire, it's a wonder these weren't deployed at the Battle of Hoth instead of, or even in addition to, the AT-ATs
So these babies (like alot of Imperial vehicles being based on Republic vehicles) are the predecessors of the vehicles such as Juggernaut 5 from Mandalorian. (and although it's dumb, it makes me wonder if those rail tanks from Solo are somewhat based on the caterpillar design of the juggernaut).
The argument about which side of the Juggernaut is the front is almost as contentious as whether to say A-T-A-T or @-@ (It's A-T-A-T and the front of the Juggernaut is the part with the larger head)
The Juggernaut is a cool tank I will deny its effectiveness. But also can see 160kmh top speed being a double edged sword. It great if you need to charge at the enemy head on going forward on flat terrain. But on very difficult terrain and having to make sudden turns or directional changes could be hazardous at Juggernaut is probably a bit top heavy and prone flipping over than even an AT-AT is to being tripped.
Umm, Geetsly's, less AT-somethings, more Cygnus Spacework craft like the Assault Gunboat and the King Hell God-Emperor Starfighter of Death/Missile Boat.
Wonder if any of these crews ever joked how they're "the juggernaut" and once they got moving nothing could stop them they way the X-Men franchise does too
160 km's is about 99 to 100 mph doesn't seem like much but getting a terrestrial vehicle to travel that fast,of that size, while maintaining battle readiness would be nothing short of a miracle by todays standards, let alone futuristic
The thing I don't like about starwars (and other space opera type games/universes) is that their land vehicles are absolutely massive. For the battle of kashyyyk the juggernaut would have been stuck on the beaches. Those trees are so big that, it will just bounce off or easily get stuck in the roots. The land tank in destiny too. The cliffs on nessus are as tall as the tank, that tank is gonna have a range of about a quarter mile squared, because there's nowhere it can go.
2 queries : 1st why couldn't droids be placed in the towers , surely cheaper than clones . 2nd why do they still wear their helmets inside the vehicle .
1st, the GAR avoid using droids whenever possible. No need to be prudent with manpower use as well since there never seems to be a shortage of clones to begin with. 2nd, however huge this thing is, it's not a flagship or mothership. If you're in one of these things, you're deployed & you're on duty, thus keeping the helmet on is just regular protocol. Also, it's better to keep the helmet on your head than to have it take up any of the already cramped space inside.
@@admiral_franz_von_hipper5436 Cameras are not as intuitive. Moreover, you'd still have to place dedicated hardware for the spotter inside the crew compartment after doing so, taking up even more space inside the already very cramped vehicle.
@@FalconWindblader Thanks, but if I'm in there , the helmet comes off . I'd also repurpose a few droids to use their superior logistics and vision for suicide duties . Not every drone / clone would be a puppet after going through horrible scenarios of teammates being taken for granted. That's just my opinion and there's 8 billion of those floating around at any given moment in time.
@@FalconWindblader The retractable trunk for the post already takes up a lot of space. Replace that with a much smaller trunk with a camera on top and route the imagery to the commanders’ posts. Makes it much easier for the commander to get battlefield information without having to rely on another person to do the spotting and then relay the information orally to the commander. In the real world, tanks and other fighting vehicles since WWII operate on the system of commander as spotter due to the benefits listed above.
That pod is a pretty dumb idea. You can just get shot off and fall to your death if the bolt doesn’t kill you first, the juggernaut comes to a stop and you get flung off, the juggernaut explodes and the tower comes crashing down with you in the pod, or you literally just fall off because your standing still in a open, high, area on a high speed juggernaut.
I never saw this till now, but if you remove the wheels, add 4 giant legs, spin it around so the rear cockpit is the head, it's just a precursor design of a shrunk down AT-AT, in a way.
